Hey Barneys,

I think the usual fits i.e. depends on what you want to use it for and other devices you want to use in conjunction etc, etc.

Therefore, if you have an iPhone, iMac etc. go with the iPad.  If you have an android version, I personally like to stick with the same brand, just for uniformity and communication.

I have a BlackBerry and therefore have a Playbook (same company). Hope this helps. NQTY

I'm tapping on my wife's iPad right now. One thing for sure is that the iPads just simply work. They never crash, go slow, etc and the battery lasts forever. They're simple and work all the time no matter what, which is why I would be hesitant to purchase something else. I try to steal it whenever I can ;)

If you want to read stuff from hard drives and other machines and get all technical, another tablet operating system might be easier but for everything else the iPads are top notch.

Cheers

Our iPad crashes quite frequently. Apps just stop and go into the nevernever. Remove the app then reinstall it mostly works.  Goes slow with the latest apps as they are often 'optimised' for the iPad2.

It crashes often enough and is so restrictive, that we are thinking of changing to an Android. Not convinced we will be better off though.

It is still a computer. They all break or go slow or apps fail.

Depends on what media the pics are located.

From a camera, you can get an iPad adaptor for memory cards, or upload the pics to a PC and transfer them to the iPad via various apps using WiFi or Bluetooth.

Go 3G?  Depends on the dongle and how you will connect to the machine with the dongle. Apple do not make it easy in this area. The dongle doesn't fit the iPad, and 'tethering' to a PC is not an option at this stage. Tethering to an IPhone is OK I think (don't have an iPhone).
You may need a 'dongle' (or router that will accept the dongle) with WiFi.

I have an ipad2 and I LOVE it.

I decided that I did not need the 3G version as you can tether the iPad to to iPhone v ia wi-fi or Bluetooth (Personal Hotspot) to use the iPhones 3G data. This works well. I am unsure if you can tether an iPad to other phones.

The only downside to the wi-fi only version is that it apparently does not have a dedicated GPS - it uses known wi-fi spots to determine its location - so I'm told.

That is right about GPS, I use a hotspotmand can attach 3 devices at once which you cant do with 3G

The iPad has the GPS in the 3G model (3G, WiFi). It does not need any network connection to work as long as you have maps installed or downloaded onto the iPad for the app to use (maps need to be installed or downloaded in/via the app/s you use).

Your dongle will not fit the iPad, so you need another way to connect to the web. That would be via 3G or via a WiFi hub/router/tethering device connecting to 3G or mobile WiFi.

I suggest you have a quick look through the MySwag communications section for remote or mobile connections for a better understanding on this topic.

Edit:  other devices may or may not have a GPS chip installed, depends on the model.

I think they're all pretty easy to do that stuff. I guess you gotta sum up what you want it for. The big advantage is their convenience coupled with a decent screen. I heard it said on the radio that iPads are for old ladies  ;D, but you want to weigh up am I better off with an iPod Touch (portability) or iMac (functionality & storgage). IMO iPads are a compromise of the two. Don't get me wrong, like I said, I have a tablet, but its because of the convenience aspect.

Good luck

Like I said before, I have an android wi fi only Iconia..
Why not 3G  ?  It works fine off a dongle. ( one off price of $150/ year)  which saves signing up for another plan..
When at home, it obviously works off the wi fi modem..
Downloading photos.......it doesn't recognise my camera, so I use a card reader to hook straight into the USB slot
These things are not a computer, so all seem to have their little issues at times, but mine gets used every day instead of the normal computer..

We have an iPad 2 and love it, use it as a gps when traveling and planning routes, we have the 3G version but when not at home use my iPhone as a personal hot spot or my wife's Motorola can do the same so no need for another sim card or extra outlay.

So, for the partly uneducated.....you don't need the 3 G part of it for a connection....only to use the GPS part of it. ??
