I have to admit im in the same boat. Own an iPhone. works pretty well, but am a bit hacked off with iPad's lack of things like USB ports to zap my photos to it and connect an external GPS antenna or anything else for that matter to it without buying an adaptor for even more of my hard earned!!!

The Fruit Co. need to realise that iWonderment is eventually gonna wear off eventually and people will stop buying iAnything just because they put an "i" at the start of the name (seriously some Apple Geeks would buy an iTurd if they marketed one!!!) . At least with a 'Droid or dare i say it, a Windows Tablet, you can add an external hard drive to a USB port, or plug your camera in directly to the tablet and download the photos, or zap some movies from an external HDD to the Tablet for the kids to watch, or edit those home movies you just shot on your trip without having to shell out just under $1k for something with more memory that your iphone! Admittedly, the apple software for that editing is easier to use!!) I'm not an Apple hater (like i said I love my iPhone) but I think the lack of flexibility for external device attachment on iPad is a serious downside, and has me looking at Android Tablets (Added bonus is that Des Newman has a Beta version of Oziexplorer up and running for Android, with an "iOzi" version apparently some time off based on the development of the 'Droid version (according to the Ozi website). If Ipad had a couple of USB ports, it would be a no brainer for iPad. because if you use the adaptor into the apple 30pin plug, you cant charge at the same time.

The "transformer" is on my short list too, but the issue is the range is vast now, choosing is hard!!! Each other option has its own limitations too. Which compromise do you make?

We just bought an I Pad and it works well. Bit like a Toyota they don't look real flash or have the latest bits but they simply work.

Just started looking into tablets I'm heading in with open mindness I have a basket full of apples so iPad has merit for uniformity however they r expensive and lack a lot of inputs USB sd and stuff I looked at Xoom not that impressed I am interested in the acer tablets they have many in there range so I'm going to research them more.

Samsung Galaxy 10.1 if you like Android.
Very much alike. If you don't know the difference, prob go iPad just.
Seagate have just released a wireless Hard Drive that you can stream to iPad and Android, looks the ticket for more storage!!!

My vote is for an iPad too.

Re: downloading photos, get yourself the Camera Connection Kit for the iPad - makes it as easy as pie. Best $35 you'll ever spend.

Re:wifi vs 3G - you say your dongle is a wifi one? Ie, you don't need to plug it in, you just connect to its wifi network and it works (like a mifi hotspot thingy)? If so, the wifi iPad would do fine. It you've got a smartphone that can share the Internet connection, you can use that too. Ie, my ipad can connect to my old iPhone via Bluetooth, and use its Internet connection.

The advantage of the 3G iPad is, as the others have said, not needing to worry about any of this - it just works. Plonk the sim card in it, and then use it whereeever you are. Plus, it's got the gps receiver, if you ever wanted to load up the hemp maps app for it. $150 for the pre-paid Telstra iPad sim is pretty good value.

I have a wifi iPad, and wish I'd paid the extra for the 3G model.

It's one of the best things we've ever bought, especially when travelling. Not cheap, but great.

i only buy a 1gig recharge every month and that is "heaps" for me

The one I was referring to is the 12gig sim for $150. It has a 12 month expiry on it, unlike the 1 month of the smaller sims. Makes it quite good value, even if it is expensive up front.

How much is the 1gb recharge? I've been out of the iPad sim pricing game for a while now.

$20/1 gig = $0.02 or 2 cents, per Megabyte, valid for 30 days. Usually use it or lose it.

$150/12 gig = $0.0125 or 1.25 cents per Megabyte, valid for 12 months. A rate saving per megabyte of 62%!

As I understand it, a 3G + WiFi has an inbuilt GPS receiver, a WiFi only iPad doesn't.

Last week travelling around Dimbulah, Chillagoe, Mt Mulligan, Mt Carbine area, with little to no phone signal, the inbuilt GPS tracked my progress beautifully, and the iPad was on the passenger seat in the shade.

I also have a Bad Elf GPS dongle (USD$100) which I use as in some situations

, the inbuilt antenna doesn't work very well but I don't think this will apply to 4wding.

My experience of computers is that buying small, is false economy, and I now buy the biggest & best I can, hence a 64 gig 3G+WiFi that's damned near full!

That is old school thinking, Apple aren't working that way anymore. They have the cloud system.

Otherwise it is as simple as plugging it into your computer and drag and drop via iTunes. Just like plugging an Android into something to get the files.

I have a first gen iPad 3G (so GPS, but I don't have a SIM) mounted on my windscreen with a RAM mount.

It seems to work pretty well.

I've also had a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for a while now, although since I couldn't get a mount for it, the iPad had to do. It is a pity as I would like to run Androzic on the Tab and have it mounted in the car.

Revisiting an old topic as newer models have emerged.

What is the opnion now?
Still Ipad better than Samsung?
My intention is to use it mainly for internet, email, gps and photo storage.

I bought a Lenovo 64Gb tablet and its doing everything I want, it has the full size USB port and card readers. i also purchased the leather folder with an inbuilt keyboard which the tablet fits into.

Very happy that Im not captured by the "i" storm as the flexibility of Android and Windows is better for me.

Doesnt matter which one you buy they all do the same thing programmatically (i can develop apps in multiple languages). Your decision should come down to $$$ and what type of user interface you like. For me android wins due to cost and the apps with the user interface are good for those that are relevant to use campers. My recommendation would be the 7 or 10 inch Google nexus.

One thing apple does well is ensures a standard user interface on all apps submitted to the app store. Which means across apps expect the same functionality and looks. I dont like their hardware and software lock down though.

Stay away from windows - too much maintenance.

Well I'm x2 on the Asus Transformer Prime (TF201). Proper GPS even without getting the 3G model, none of this poncey AGPS that the Fruit co. pushes on its non 3G models. Poor blooke at the good guys sold me the TF201 Prime with dock for the price of the TF300 - His confusion - my gain, by about $150!!!

Screen brightness is an issue in the car and compared to the wifes iPood2, the Prime with it;s Super IPS mode screen enabled is a LOT brighter and easier to read, even in full direct sunlight. Not sure how this stacks up to the Retina display, But then i got mine, with keyboard and GPS for less than the cost of a 16gb WiFi iPood , AND it runs Oziexplorer! GPd coverage in car would benefit from bluetooth GPS connection to help maintain connection when its tucked into the spot next to the front seats when not being used, but if being held by the co-pilot, it seems to work fairly constantly even in heavy tree canopied areas. A dash mount would likely resolve.

Still the Prime is an awesome machine for the current pricing........
