Sprit of Tasmania with generator and chainsaw

Hi All,

We have booked a trip to Tassie towing our CT, was wondering if you need to empty fuel from generator and chainsaw prior to depature, I have read up on transporting fuel containers and gas bottles, cant find anything on the others

Fuel containers must be empty.  I imagine that would include the 'containers' on the plant.

I would say yes, empty them but in saying that, Ive always taken my genny chock a block full. Never even crossed my mind to empty it .

Thanks for the replies, I will take the advice of making sure that the tanks are empty, the web site says to fill fuel containers with water, but obviously you wouldn't do that to a motor

What is the difference between those fuel tanks and a vehicle fuel tank?

We always carry empty jerry cans on the vehicle and camper but have never been asked to fill them with water. Once a person we were travelling with had full jerry cans and was asked to get rid of the fuel(diesel) and then he had to fill them with water. I think as long as tanks are empty when you get there, you wont have to fill them with water.

Took our camper over in January this year and we did not empty our generator or chainsaw, same for the return trip.  Our chainsaw was in a tool box on top of our cruiser and the generator was in the camper. The check point people did not ask about them, only about other containers and gas bottles. We had a spare full gas bottle but because it was bolted to the camper (via a bracket) it was OK.    Kevin

Keep in mind a lot depends on how busy they are and which port you are at.  Tassie port security seems to be far more relaxed whereas melbourne seems to be more contract staff who can be over the top a little.

Hubby just said make sure there is no fruit there..... when we went last year they were paranoid about fruit

when i went over last i had spare diesel and thinners in 20 litre round drums.i was told that the only fuel to be carried was to be in original factory fitted fuel tanks on vehicle,no long range or jerries etc,they didnt look so hard to find them though.

When we went over 4yrs ago,when we go of the boat at Tassie there was four 4wd's in or group, 2 landcruiser's and 2 nisssan's, both the nissan's had to gernie the wheel arches etc due top mud and grass seeds etc yet both landcruisers got through ok, mine was one of these and the undercarriage and wheel arches were full of the same mud etc.

No obvious logic whatsoever in empty fuel containers.  'Empty' container - i.e. full of fuel vapour - is far more likely to explode in a 'worst case' than is a full one.  (Although probably not as bad for deisel.)  Hence far safer to have tanks and containers full.

yea, its nothing more than one of them play the game things..
Apparently if you get the size of your car/trailer combo wrong when booking(>10m and pay for <10m), they just boot you off, you dont get the chance to pay the difference...

I suspect it is more to do with insurance requirements.

The web site just talks about fuel containers, need to have these empty and full of water, gas bottles need to be disconnected from any appliance and need to be attached via a bracket, if they are not attached, you need to put them in a trailer they have, get a docket for it and present to them when you disembark (thought I would throw in a nautical term)

No mention of chainsaws or generators, I thought I would ask the question here, always get a bit of lively discussion

The Tas freight can be best sumed up with $ . The trip over in either direction can really be nasty if the load moves . I have seen taughtliners looking like pregnent  hippos  after a ruff crossing . Fire sparked by the load moving causing sparks to ruptered fuel tanks /drums . Bass Straight can really be tricky . But there is some inconsinstys in what goes where & when . It depends on whos on the gate mostly , but this can change , its not locked in ,,,,,, If you have a contract to move trailers at a set rate per crossing per week this may change

I agree,and certainly wouldn't want fuel vapour filled tanks, but FULL tanks shouldn't be a problem unless the hold is really burning - in which [worst] case it is likely that the inevitable and un-controlled application of large applications of seawater will 'solve' the problem / make solving it irrelevant.

That would require some LARGE recovery gear. That 1200lb winch would struggle even with diff locks engaged.
