Hi Group,

I did Army cadets from 14yrs up until 17 yrs

After cadets, I spent 18 months with 2/17 RNSWR (Infantry Reserve),

Left Reserves to go Full time Royal Australian Navy (Fleet Air Arm), Able Seaman Air Technical Communications Sailor at HMAS Albatross with HC 723 SQN, 816 SQN and served on ships flight with HMAS Adelaide (Guided Missile Frigate), and Ships Flight HMAS Moresby (Oceanography & Hydrographic Survey Vessel). I did 7 years full time before taking my discharge.

After leaving the Navy I returned back to Newcastle for University Studies, Civvy job and family, and re-inlisted into the Army Reserves again serving with 142 Signals Sqn, 5 Brigate HQ, 8 Signals Regiment, which I did another 18 months before finally throwing in the towel on a military career.

Now Im reduced to watching "McHales Navy" and following the time honoured tradition of being an ex Birdie (Naval Aviation Sailor) pulling the piss out of "TOP GUN" everytimes its on TV, whilst coping criticism from my Ex RAAF wife " If your mocking Top Gun so much than why do you watch it"

As it sits now, if Australia is ever invaded, I will man the trenches as a back up support for the country womens association (our last line of defence).

49th Class Apprentice, (Long live the Odds) at Bonegilla.... then off to 1 SIG REGT, and 136 SIG SQN, just under 9 years in total.

I was a Naval reserve guy from 1963 till 1967 when I enlisted full time RAN. 3 weeks before going to HMAS Cerberus i received my call up as a Nasho- so sorry guys now a full time sailor.

Joined HMAS Stuart (de48) and spent my sea time in her until Dec 1972 when I was posted back to Cerberus.

Paid off in Jan 1973 and even today I miss the sea, the service and the people.

God bless our service men and women.

I did 22 years in the Navy, all of that in submarines. Apprenticeship at Nirimba, before serving on the Oberons and the Collins Class SUbmarines. Still reserves. If anyone asks me would i do it all again i say 'yes, in a heartbeat'.

I like to say that i saw the whole world, only problem is it was the same half twice.

Joined RAN in 1992 as a Medic.

Cerberus, Penguin, Cerberus, Penguin, Sydney Recruiting Unit, Cerberus, Kuttabul, Commissioning crew HMAS Leuwin (Hydro Ship in Cairns), Waterhen, Harman - discharged in 2003.

Commisioned as a Reservist, still do the odd day (tax free $$), but work full time for Defence as a civy.

I did 20 years in the Senior service( Royal Australian Navy) from 1971-1991

Started life as a aircraft mechanic working on Skyhawk Jets on VC 724 sqdn and VF 805 sqdn
, with time on the Aircraft Carrier HMAS Melbourne.

Transferred branches to Coxswain (helmsman and discipline) in 1976.

Spent time on HMAS Melbourne, Hobart, Albatross, Stalwart, Patrol Boat HMAS Ardent (Darwin from 1980-1983), HMAS Penguin, Police training school COMAUSNAVSUP, HMAS Cerberus (recruit Training School) and finally Paid off at HMAS Penguin.  Been there done that and after being out 20 years would go back and do it again.

Remember the old navy recruiting add on tv in the early 80's with the song ' you will be wet, you'll be homesick and frightened, but the pride of the fleet is in you'

I recorded the song off you tube and had it for a whole as my ring tone, the add from the early 80's on you tube is good for a laugh.

Hi,
   joined RAAF in Jan 1964 to avoid conscription into the Army.
Direct entry to photography, after Rookies went to Laverton, then Butterworth Malaysia, met SWMBO, back to Pt Cook in Jan 1970. Married and discharged Jan 1971, photography for 38 years with University of Tas and now retired.

It is interesting to look back on the difference between 6 years service life and 38 years doing similar work at a University.
I  applied for a job with the Antarctic division about 15 years ago (unsuccessful) and sat down to do my first ever CV. I had pages of stuff from the 6 years in the RAAF, and was pushing it uphill to get one page from 23 years of University employment.
I think you get to do just so much more interesting stuff in the services, but I found the protocol, formalities and tradition tiresome and was glad to get out at the end of one contract.

Hi,  
Ex Navy - Joined in 1981 and did 7 years full time service as a Writer (Administration) until 1988 (met CRW in 1986).  I served at HMAS Cerberus and spent the rest of my time at Kuttabul, Navy Headquarters and Garden Island.  They threatened to send me to Canberra so I opted out.  Had some of the best years of my life in the service and met some wonderful people.  :cheers:

12 years Navy from June 66 till June 78most of the time on patrol boats and lch's.I had 8 years based in Qld.Still miss it and would go back tomorrow.

1st Field Regt, RAA (Artillery, Wacol Barracks) from 74-78, then switched to the RAAF and trained as a Rad Tech Ground, mainly ground radars. 78-80 in Rad School, Laverton, 80-82 Base Radio Amberley then 82-84 at Base Radio Darwin. Gave it the flick then after a total of 10.5 yrs and went on to a career in computers in civvy street. Still doing it...

What scares me is we have that many old "has beens" and "ancient mariners" in the group, we could all get together set up our camper trailers and proabably qualify as an RSL club "under canvas".

Could you imagine the amount of BullShit and old warries being spun if there was a "Dads Army" Swaggers Get together with a good flow of alcohol.

Scarey isnt it.

Unfortunately it is gone but MSBS isn't to bad from what I understand but one needs to do a minimum of 26 yrs to see any real benefit.
