I did 20 years in the Senior service( Royal Australian Navy) from 1971-1991

Started life as a aircraft mechanic working on Skyhawk Jets on VC 724 sqdn and VF 805 sqdn
, with time on the Aircraft Carrier HMAS Melbourne.

Transferred branches to Coxswain (helmsman and discipline) in 1976.

Spent time on HMAS Melbourne, Hobart, Albatross, Stalwart, Patrol Boat HMAS Ardent (Darwin from 1980-1983), HMAS Penguin, Police training school COMAUSNAVSUP, HMAS Cerberus (recruit Training School) and finally Paid off at HMAS Penguin.  Been there done that and after being out 20 years would go back and do it again.

Name wouldn't be Carl W_ _ _e would it?

Pete Smith - formerly NAMAE then LSATA, made it to PO in the Fleet Air Arm before transferring to General Service in 1983. Was commissioned in 1987 and paid off in 2003. Still working for the Navy but probably only for another 6 months or so before going on the wallaby full time.

Yep that'd be us all right  ;D Saw Dave a few months back he is running quite a large plumbing business out of Yamba these days.  In fact the circle has done the full turn for me....I'm actually working in Albatross and have been on and off for about a year. Things have certainly changed since our days but hey that happens no matter where you go eh?

Well what a small world, I own a company that sell blinds and curtains, we have done quite a few defense bases, including Albatross, ADFA, Duntroon, Singleton, Enoggra, Ambely and now Townsville, what a difference going to these places, in May this year I have been out 20 years, the same time I was in, and still can't get away from it, not that I am complaining.

Started the military life back in 76 at 1RTB and then onto Armoured Centre Puckapunyal. Started to be trained as a driver on Centurion but the course was cancelled as the new Leopard came into the Army so went over to carriers M113A1. First posted to BSqn 3Cav Regiment. Did time as Schools instructor Driving and Servicing wing, trips to Butterworth and Fort Knox Kentucky. Would I do it all again after doing 22 years, oh hell yeah, wouldn't miss it for quids. Had some very funny times, and some sad times, met some great blokes who I can still call best mates.

not sure if i can post in this thread (not being nasho or army or navy for that matter) but my old man was Quality manager at the arourment depo in silverwater (where the olympic village is now). He was in the RAN as a civi for over 30 years (retiered in '96) starting out at kingswood and st.marys then going to newington. Was very close to have go to gulf war as a civi for what im not sure that was "classified".

I think that pretty much holds true for all the Services really.  Had a reunion of old shipmates from the CVS 21 HMAS Melbourne last year....hadn't seen most of those I knew for more than 20 years and that 'team' feeling was still very apparent.

Dropped by and saw an old digger mate in Paynesville, quite a few years ago now, we ended up that weekend side by side fighting the bushfires. We had good laugh and a few beers after, was just like old times.
