Toll charges when towing CT
« on: January 18, 2011, 08:03:30 PM »
Hi,
I was travelling westbound on the M2 in Sydney on the way to pick up the new CT, I was charged $2.20. On the return Eastbound trip I had the CT in tow and was charged $7.10. This is the class 4 rate that I thought was only for trucks so I sent an email to Roam express who replied asking if the CT was over 2 metres tall, i advised it is only 1.8metres but the tow vehicle has a rooftop tent on the roof that makes it over 2 metres. I explained this but they never replied and the $7.10 charge still applies. Has anyone else had similar issues when towing a CT through the toll plaza's?

Update; Roam finally replied and asked if I could possibly lower the roof rack to below 2 metres, well that means we would have to take the rooftop tent off which is not possible when the in-laws are using the trailer. I then rang the RTA who provided the etag and they said no problem we will instruct Roam to adjust the charge.
So it looks like I have to go through this hassle every time now, I think I will leave the etag at home and let them take a photo next time so at least they can see it is a car and trailer and not a HGV.

Cheers
Mark

I have had this from time to time. I argued successfully that I had been charged the standard rate on many occasions, and so the higher charge was a system error on their part.

Not here in Qld ... CT is still free.

This from the GoVia website:  Cars Class 2:  Four-wheeled motor vehicles, including taxis  which are not commercial vehicles (including vehicles towing a trailer or caravan).  Click on the link to see how they work out the charges here in Soggy Qld, and then I'd check how it works in the state you were driving (like Qld, but not drunken).

P.S.  Roam Express says to "see your toll company" about the charges.  Is it done by the Gov as well?

The operators of the M2 have a stronger desire to make money than most, for example, if you attend a meeting at their office next to the toll plaza the only way you can access the building is to go throught the toll gates. However, the building's car park EXIT, boom gate controlled, comes out BEFORE the toll gates meaning that for every meeting I attended they got 3 lots of toll charges from me....

I don't get the M2. It is one of the most choked roads in Sydney (if not the). From 7am to 930am or so every week day it is an absolute car park. I used to use it often, Kellyville to Botany everyday. Took years off my life.

Man I don't miss tolls. I was doing $350 per month on them.

I get hammered for the boat when I go through a toll. It's such an effort to drop the canopy that I would rather get fleeced the extra couple dollars.  :-[ No issues with the camper yet. But I might try the Big Jules angle when I am bored one day.  ;D

Because they work out the hight by a light beam & the amount of axels by a pressure pad, If you are over a certain hight and have a combernation of three axels or more they will just think it is a car/caravan combo or a truck. I would be ringing again and find someone who's in charge and see how you go.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Rescue1,

Anytime I have needed to go the office at the M2 toll booths, I have asked for a 'ticket' to get through the booths.

I didn't use the M2 to get there, and get off at the Mac Uni ramp. No problems as long as you don't use the M2.

hahahaha !!!

Apparently my CT went for a drive down the M7 all by itself. For this privilege it needs to pay $1.13 plus $15.00 admin, transfer and now a "2nd query" fee.

I don't think Roam liked my response, maybe my CT was chasing after my car as it didn't want to be left alone in SW Sydney, if they check their records my car was about 0.25 seconds in front of it

Haha...
I leave my etag at home now and they are forced to take a picture and look up the trailer rego, so far they have not mistaken it for a 40 ton truck like they did when I carried the tag.
I have added the trailer rego to my account online though so they don't charge me admin fee's for chasing the number up.

Have you thought of taking the wheels of the car...that will lower the height and then you won't have a toll issue..having said that I have towed CT and trailer through tools atoms Brisbane with no issues

a few years ago I had removed my tag for a comp and forgot to replace it. I had to drive up to the pay booth. With a straight face they quoted me the truck fee. I asked to repeat the price, they did. I laughed and said for a Suzuki, not a Kenworth. Was told yes thats right. Ok get the manager.....(wow they have tunnels) he too asked if I would lower the car to save the confusion....lmao OK I'll do that

SMH what a ripoff.  So glad I don't live in Brisbane anymore. I do recall anxiously raiding the ash tray trying to find 40 cents to pay the toll on the Logan motorway. How times have changed.

I don't use the tag anymore..........
I just added the rego number to the account.
They take the photo and bill the account.

I got sick of fighting every week because my ladders on the roof sometimes triggered a truck charge.

I would have thought that this was a regular problem and they would look into it, but it appears that until it starts costing THEM money.......alls good.

Besturds.
Oh and by the way. What was the 3 x 3 fuel levy for???

God now I've started.........SORRY.

I have a NSW eTag and left it at home when I traveled through Brisbane on my way to Fraser island, not thinking that I would need it. So I thought I would do the right thing & rang the QLD toll company to pay the toll fee straight away as per the signs along the hwy saying you have 48hrs to pay.

Then when I got home & received my next statement, they also kindly charged the eTag as well for my trip up north  >:( >:( RUDE!!

Stuff your tolls, don't have them here and hopefully never will. Perth freeways are a carpark at peek times like most cities I guess . Tolls sound like a reason to print money, what a rip off. We pay enough taxes now. Who voted the idiots in that brought about this extortion.

Nothing wrong with toll roads as long as you get some advantage for your money.  I drive from Brisbane to Canley Vale in Sydney on occasions and always use the toll roads in preference to fighting my way from the end of the F3 round the north-west suburbs (when are they going to fix Pennant Hills Road?).  Here in Brisbane the new Airport Link tunnel (toll free until 22nd August) cuts 10 minutes and about 14 sets of traffic lights off my journey to and from work.  Driving from Tullamarine to Dandenong is much quicker and easier since the toll roads opened.

You pays yer money and you makes yer choice.  If the cost isn't worth the time and stress saved you don't use it - a classic example of that is the Clem7 cross-river tunnel in Brisbane.

Whether I will pay the Airport Link tolls on a daily basis is still under consideration, but I certainly use toll roads when I have the trailer hitched on.  And I've never been charged for the trailer.
Camping is great as long as the mattress is inner spring!
