It's funny.
Everyone "knows" about EVs supposedly going up in flames, but no-one mentions the couple of Toyota Corolla GR burning down to the ground.

I wonder who will be checking the quality of the e-bikes and e-scooters coming in from overseas. This is I think where the problem is coming from, not good quality products, just cheap rubbish we are buying.
At least it might by the right step in solving the problem.

I have driven a few different EVs and have not been a fan of the driving experience from an operation basis. Some are like you have hoped into a space ship. To date the MG has been my favourite drive experience.

This last week I have opportunity to drive the new Subaru Solterra which is the Subaru entry to the EV world developed in partnership with the Toyota BZ4X. I must say it is a nice car and it has the Japanese functionality which is what is missing from all the others I have driven. The AC controls, the steering wheel controls, the electric handbrake, the mirror and window controls are all very Toyota which I liked given I drive a Landcruiser 300s and we have a Subaru as a daily drive. You could hop in and drive it without being distracted by new technology. The car is surprisingly spacious.

To date I have covered around 700km and today  I tested the range of 450km to within 60 km so I had a little range anxiety towards the end of the trip. It is currently hooked up to a wall charger and on connecting the car it indicated the full recharge will take around 10 hours. I would be interested to see what the recharge would be if placed on a rapid charger.

I will go so far as saying except for the $70k price I could be tempted to own this EV as a daily drive in the knowledge that I would still have the cruiser to do the towing/touring duties. I will be exploring this car further.

EVs are a perfectly functional vehicle for commuting and as such can make very good sense for those with off-street parking and charging particularly with solar panels on their roof. If you really like performance a Tesla Model 3 or Y would be ideal although with all the Big Brother about using that power and keeping your licence seem at odds with each other. Each to their own but I'm not interested in an EV at present due to their ugly depreciation although I guess MG's offer of 10yr/200k warranty like Mitsi ICE can address that somewhat as I think all these computers on wheels will be less long lived than simpler ICE cars from the past.

The overarching problem I have is it's nonsense to believe these largely coal fired manufactures from China are in any way saving the planet and the fickle energy to run them is anything other than environmental delusion given the diluteness of wind and solar energy-

Can be simply avoided if they buy one with a LiFePo battery (available in many models now) or a Sodium one (forthcoming). Literally zero fire hard for both.

Safer than Nickel Cobalt Manganese chemistries but they're still prone to thermal runaway with abuse and poor quality BMS as we see very commonly with e-bike fires-

Now they're fairly small but a Tesla Model 3 had 4400 x 21700 cells (21mm diam by 70 mm tall) all stuck together in a structural battery pack that needs to be dealt with safely once it's run out of oomph and done its job-
