Sorry All,
Need to get this off my chest!!!!
Is anyone else sick of hearing about the Bali 9, a group of drug dealers who are only sorry they got caught!!! How much time and taxpayers money has been spent on this political farce?
Think of what actual good may have been achieved if the money wasted on these criminals was spent on cancer research, child illnesses etc. These are true victims through no fault of their own, and are certainly worthy causes!
I particularly like the way a religion is now having scholarships in the two ring leaders names - what sort of a message does this send? Will they also have scholarships in the name of priests convicted of atrocities against children?
Rant over, from ex-cop thank you!
-
Ha ha. I was just ranting to my wife about the disgraceful press conference the AFP had about why they stuffed it up and then spend 45 min spinning bull to cover their ass's.
They lost the chance of getting the Intel once they got back to Australia and hence the actual scum bag crime syndicate gets away with it.
The indons did nothing wrong. They enforced their law. The blame rests with the AFP Boss who made the decision to have them killed. And he is the one spinning the BS today.
My small rant.

I'd like to see a petition stating that we as Aussies do not support the governments stance nor scholarships in their name. AFAIK they died by their own hands and lives may well of been saved as an upshot...

Sorry Dazzler, totally disagree, the blame rests with these two unfortunate souls for the POOR choices they made. I am very comfortable with the role the AFP has played in this tragedy. I wonder how many busts, sexual assaults and overdoses been avoided due to this poison not entering our nation.
As for this scholarship business, sends a very poor social message indeed.
Cheers,

I would not be signing any petition as suggested above.
I agree totally with Dazzler.
The fact that they got caught and it stopped the drugs arriving in Aust ,does not mean that any user was saved from the drugs as the drug users would have got their drugs from another source the same as we will get milk from another store when our local runs out.
I also have no problem if the religion has some scholarship in the condemned criminal's name, their choice.
but as both religion and politics are not something that should be debated on a camping forum I shall leave it there

Cool logic, Constable don't lock up that murderer, if he didn't kill her someone else would have.
Wow our society is in more trouble than I thought!!!!

so does anyone have the video of the deadShits getting their brains blown all over the yard???
why the **** are they being treated as gods.. one has even been called a "hero" cause he stayed with the others when he knew the cops were coming...
****ing hero???????
-
My youngest, a student at an ACU uni, just enlightened me to the fact the the proposed [ now dropped ] scholarships were to be to Indonesian applicants only.
Work that one out..
And now we have a new resident, a widow, supporting herself how? after being picked up at the airport in a Commonwealth car, complete with chauffeur.
I presume the sale of any paintings / books will be seen as the proceeds of crime?

A populist rant, but consider what happened to these blokes vs the Bali bombers.
One lot may have caused a death, while the others committed mass murder. From 6 separate bombings, only 3 were executed, and over 100 others convicted have since been released.
The Indonesian media hailed those to be executed as 'heroes', and they were treated as martyrs when their bodies were returned to their homelands. There were even riots and protests when they were executed.

Disco Teddy, I was responding to the claim that because the drugs got stopped at bali then some junkie couldn't inject themselves, The junkie user would always get their gear regardless of this stopped supply.
I am not saying that the drugs couriers should have been given a clear passage but rather like Dazzler said that by stopping the couriers in their tracks at an Aust destination would have achieved far more for the Aust drug crime fight. As all the Indo's would have done was charged and convicted them without any further investigation, not stopping the next shipment from happening.
-
i see two issues with how it went down. Firstly the issue lies in leaving it 10 years before executing them. If you are going to leave it that long after the crime has been committed then a fair assessment needs to take place on whether they were successfully rehabilitated or not.
Secondly i dont believe in how they rate drug crimes worse than rapists, pedophiles and murderers.

Yep..thats the problem I have with the whole debacle..Not the fact that they executed a couple of drug smugglers but the fact that terrorists were let off ...Verrry Verry dodgy judicial system and a country that is so rife with corruption ..the exact reason why I will never set foot in the DUMP...

I don't see how stopping them in Australia would have achieved more Intel. The threat and act of death by firing squad failed to elicit this info, we would have flogged them with a feather.
As far as blaming the AFP for the smugglers death, well only two people made that decision and they are currently ina box.
I'm with Bird, pics or it didn't happen.

Bingo we have a winner! :cup:

Different countries have different penalties for drug importing. The facts were they went to a country that has the death penalty if convicted of drug smuggling. You can say third world countries, tough laws etc but at the end of the day they new the laws and got caught and paid the price.
In time this will all be be forgotten but maybe what happened will make the next person / persons have second thoughts when entering that country carrying drugs. But I don't think so. Remember It's their country and that's their laws whether it's right in our eyes or not. Don't carry drugs and you won't have a problem.

Nothing sums up the ridiculous suggestion of a scholarship for two convicted drug smugglers better than this analogy.

Remember Andrew Barlow and 'the other dude'. The only reason why I remember Andrew Barlow is he lived on the street behind our house where I grew up. The media are having a field day because they can sell subscriptions. I wont even remember these two Bali 9 names in a short amount of time.

The AFP use a computer system that is incredibly sophisticated at developing linkages which is where the Intel comes from.
The Bali bombers were caught using this system (PROMIS).
The AFP new 8 of the 9 involved. Every detail about them. They were Australians with Australian passports. They knew they were going to bring back heroin the only question was when.
When would be revealed when they hit customs and their alert goes off. The drugs were never going to get into the Australian system.
Seriously, there is no operational reason to give them over to another country regardless of whether the death penalty was on the table.
The worst case scenario would have been the nine locked up here. Remember Scott rush phone would have been "off" from the beginning so every linkage to him is known and the web widens. These links are critical.
The Bali bombers were identified through one mobile number linked to one of the bombers and the spider web widens.
What p'd me off today was Phelan saying that couriers don't give up Intel. That's crap. They may not give evidence but they sure as hell talk off the record.
The AFP got nothing from this.
Australia got nothing from this.
BTW - I have no issue with them being executed if that is the law in that country. We just got nothing from it.

Australia got 10 years without having to pay to house 9 drug dealers.
And zero intel to identify the syndicates importing the heroin.
Did anyone notice a spike in the price of heroin at the time they were arrested? Obviously being supply and demand it would have gone through the roof.
Well there was no spike in price because the amount the Bali 9 had was a drop in the bucket of heroin being brought in.
For comparison;
Heroin and Meth;
SYDNEY -- Australian police have seized 558 kilograms (1,230 pounds) of crystal methamphetamine and heroin with a street value of up to 500 million Australian dollars ($525 million) smuggled into the country in a shipment of terracotta pots.
Australian Federal Police say four Hong Kong nationals and three Australians were arrested in Sydney on Monday. Each faces a potential life sentence if convicted on drug charges.
Police said Tuesday that the 306 kilograms (675 pounds) of crystal meth – or ice – is the largest seizure of the drug in Australia. The 252 kilograms (556 pounds) of heroin is the third-largest haul of its kind.
Cocaine
July 27, 2001: 938 kilograms of cocaine found in a small boat at Dulverton Bay in Western Australia.
February 1, 2000: 502 kilograms of cocaine found in a small boat at Broken Bay in NSW.
August 16, 2000: 317 kilograms of cocaine found in sea cargo in Adelaide in South Australia.
December 1, 1998: 224.6 kilograms of cocaine found in a small boat at Coffs Harbour in NSW.
September 20, 2006: More than 135 kilograms of cocaine in sea cargo in Brisbane in Queensland.
Bali Nine
The bali nine had, wait for it, drum roll please;
8.3KG
They were minnows and as fisherman know you use small fish to catch big fish.

Yawn..... Is this still going.... ???
I am over them, in fact I was never under them..
Let's move on.

My only thing to add to this is if your going to put someone on death row be 100% certain of thier guilt and the consequences of the decision, make certain there is no corruption involved in said case so it can be carried out quickly and humanly, guilty or not they are still human beings and torturing them and thier families with false hopes for 10 years serves none...least of all justice

Better the wrong man, than no man at all.
One more red tick at the bottom of the spreadsheet = better clean up rate.
-
1)Never any argument over whether guilty or not.
2)Never any appeal from Indonesia about executing them, that was the 2 GUILTY ones
3)None of the drug mules were executed, only the 2 ringleaders
4)couldnt be arreseted here because they hadnt done anything wrong YET
As already said earlier lets get over it, only their families really care about them, everyone else just has an opinion which we will all forget about when our dog dies/get a flat tyre/go on holiday(bali?) etc etc

If they were tortured and given false hope for 10 years it is their own, their lawyers and the world of do gooders fault.
They are the ònes that appealed the sentance for 10 years not the Indonesian government.

If you cared to read my post correctly it was a general view on death penalty cases not the most recent one specificly, same thing happens in the states.
But since you brought it up if the Indonesians could do anything without expecting backhanders for a desireable outcome they wouldn't of had so many apeals.

There was no corruption, the accused lawyers dragged it out this long by practicing every avenue defence. As for the torturing of their families, I have no doubt every minute of their lives knowing your son or sibling is going to die by firing squad sooner or later would be hell on earth, as I try to teach my kids to keep in mind that their actions or inactions can affect the rest of the family good or bad and respect
the laws of cultures when being a guest in their country regardless if they believe in them or not.
The bali 9 knew the penalties of their offence prior to committing it, they chose to run the gauntlet and they and their families paid the the price.
As for their rehabilitation, 99% that are caught, become either religious or rehabilitated when on death row.

It's Indonesia. ..There's always corruption. Look...I'm not opposed to the death penalty in fact we should bring it back if used sparingly but statistics it's not a deterant as proven time and time again.
If you rape and murder someone and discard thier body like trash you should face the death penalty you should be executed but not because it's a deterant to others because it has been proven it dosn't work but because your a sack of Shit society shouldn't have to pay to encarserate.
Execute someone for a couple of kilos of drugs is just pointless and the whole thing was handled poorly from start to finish by all involved.thats why there was so much public reaction to it.
-
It's Indonesia. ..There's always corruption.
Theres corruption in Australia too and I'd hazard a guess - every single country on earth...
Execute someone for a couple of kilos of drugs is just pointless
that's your opinion. I wish we had harsh penalties in Australia for crimes... but the gaols are too full, and judges are told to "go light on people"...
... and the whole thing was handled poorly from start to finish by all involved.
again your opinion. What could they have done better? Arrested them in Australia for going on holidays ???
thats why there was so much public reaction to it.
Most are morons who wouldn't know their arse from their nose... that's my opinion....
Again, **** them. They knew the risks, rolled the dice a few times and got away with it... they rolled it again and got what they deserved.
Amazing how everyone had a bad childhood, or finds "GOD" when they are in Shit in jail or goal... ever noticed that... its so the do-gooders have some ammo... you should come and join up at www.cncpunishment.com (http://www.cncpunishment.com) and read some of the cases...

No thanks for the same reason I don't go to churches, manic blind ideals arnt my cup of tea.
You can pretend it wasn't badly handled all you like but it was, right down to widodo refusing to answer Abbott s calls or return them.
And yes it was pointless as it achieved nothing, look up the statistics of states the execute vs ones that don't ...it's no deterant at all particuly for drugs.
And as you failed to notice bird I support the death penalty just not for the same crimes/reasons
-
again your opinion. What could they have done better? Arrested them in Australia for going on holidays ???
Conspiracy to import. Import a prohibited substance. Read my post and what they could have done better.

Bring the bodies back, hook them up in a laboratory and clone a few hundred new criminals. Train them better than these last 9, and import sheetloads of drugs back here.
Market the dugs properly and legally, add a huge tax and make a fortune for our Government.
Give the drugs free to all braindead users for unlimited personal use and send all our State and Federal pollies on overseas trips with Malaysian Air and Germanwings.
This way we can self fund massive Government monetary increases, get rid of the drug using losers, and rid ourselves of all our useless greedy politicians.
It makes it a Win/Win situation in most cases.
PS buy shares in Funeral parlours and Crematoriums.

I personally have no problems with these guys facing the death penalty as like already mentioned they knew the risk. But I do believe 10 years on death row is too long and when the death penalty decision has been given by the court, then there should be a quick turnaround.
I believe Indonesia had no choice to follow through with this sentence as once you let one person off, then it creates a legal precedence for future scum bags. This way it sends a clear message to these drug mulls even small amounts will result in the death penalty.
I also believe the drug lords have influential people on their payrolls, so every now and then they give these mulls small amounts of drugs but also tip off the authorities with the details so arrest can be made. This way it appears the system is working and pats on the back are given, but at the same time the influential people also know to turn a blind eye to the big shipments.
-
then there should be a quick turnaround.
Agreed, but it was prolonged by all the dogooders, no one else.
-
No sympathy from me!
I believe that amounts to about 40,000 hits on the street of death and destruction and all the associated evils that illegal drug taking brings with it.
Thank God even that small amount (relatively speaking) didn't make it here.

Good indictment/s indeed mate, certainly not a walk up start from what I've seen and read about the information that was at hand. As we know the decisions made inrelation to these matters would not have been made lightly. Any successful efforts at stopping the illegal importation of any illiegal drug should be applauded.
As to the perception that we lost valuable intell, this is harder to quantify. Although it is my opinion that if either of the two were able and or willing to provide any useful information then surely they would have done so in an effort to prove rehabilitation and gain some assistance in sentencing. The notion that they were attempting to protect family from illegal reprisals is pure Hollywood. They sealed their own fate the moment they chose to leave our country. Just my opinions though.
Cheers,
Disco Teddy.
-
Could have, should have, would have.....
A lot of this thread is full of irrelevant discussion. Whether the punishment fits the crime, the amount of drugs considered trivial or the fact that their initial capture just means another drug mule steps up to try their luck - all of it really is redundant .
They would have known what the penalty and consequences were for getting caught smuggling drugs in that country. They took that gamble and lost.
And tell me who wouldn't miraculously turn a new leaf, have a new outlook on life, start believing in religion, pledge to spend the rest of your life helping sick people and the poor..... if it could possibly save your ass from facing a firing squad?
Any loss of life is sad, but really there is no-one else to blame for their demise but themselves - end of story.

I appreciate what you are saying. With regard to Intel I mean the more broader long term Intel that you get from the nexus of the various entities involved.
IMO, from a big picture long term syndicate focused investigation they through these lower level losers away.
The AFP acted like the local CIB rather than the national force they should be.
Cheers.

If you lived in the States then you would be well aware it's been proven that innocent people have been falsely executed. And that in spite of the death penalty people still commit the same crimes. And not all States support the death penalty - a country divided.
With respect to the other posters in this thread, Australia as a society does not believe in the death penalty. It's been abolished for 50 years, and successive governments have all agreed it's not the Australian belief system. I believe there is even a question mark as to the guilt of the last person we executed.
Feel free to argue your beliefs vociferously, as is your right, however the overwhelming majority of Australians do not agree with the principle.
We don't have the death penalty, and we enjoy some of the best living standards in the world, we can safely walk down the street in our first world country, and we are free to argue this type of thing on a free and fair platform.
We have no need for it, and if we can construct a society like ours without it, then surely other countries can. I appreciate the diverse views, and respectfully agree to disagree with some.
-
while people in general may still commit the crimes. those executed dont.

Nothing?
Yes sir, nothing.
The topic of this thread is the Bali nine.
First part of your post is about the death penalty in the US.
Second part is the death penalty in Australia.
Third part is telling me to voice my opinion on (I assume) the death penalty.
Then you go on about how great Australian society is, which I agree with.
So where is there anything about the original topic of the Bali Nin in your latest post?
But I will make one thing clear. I do not discuss my political or religous views on any social media.
That includes my views on the death penalty.
Happy to discuss it in person or around a campfire though.
