apparently not an ISIS flag, but a generic islamic flag.
update: seems to be a flag for another terrorist group...
why haven't muslim leaders condemned this attack already??

already plenty of jokes on Sickpedia :S

Agree and really feel for the hostages involved as they must be scared beyond belief knowing there captor is willing and will most likely die for his cause.
-
One shot is all it takes from Army or Police sniper.
it should not drag on and give the people involved any more advertising, which is what they want.
Government need to send a clear message, this type of thing isnt welcome here and wont be tolerated.

Whilst this is deemed a Criminal incident, the NSW Police Force are the controlling agency. Their mantra is "Contain and Negotiate" so they will never take a shot unless there is an imminent threat to the life of the hostages.
BUT
If this event is deemed an act of terrorism, then it will be taken over by Federal Agencies. The Counter Terrorism Task Force will lead the event (Which includes the SAS), they do not contain and negotiate and they will take the shot when it presents itself.
-
Good to see the media are starting to make claims to make news.
The federal authorities will not take control until invited to by the states. They do not automatically take control purely because it is a terrorism act they are generally invited. The NSW police have very highly trained police that can deal with extreme situations. The "SAS" that the media is claiming is based on the east coast is actually a detachment of 1st commando at holsworthy. It forms part of Tactical Group east and was formed approx tens years ago. They train in counter terrorism the same as the sas do in Perth. I think you will only likely see them if they are dealing with a military type force. The NSW police special operations group are quite capable of shooting if they need to.

not a bad feed for info, minus the media bulls**t...

I gave up watching the news reports hours ago - nothing new, just looping the same faeces hour after hour... just the same fiction hour after hour with some "expert" thrown in the mix speaking like he knows everything and goes through this weekly...

As much as we hate to see these things happen in our backyard, thoughts must go the people being held hostage.
I hope it ends peacefully.

The flag is not new, and the two phrases are probably the most well known in Islam.
No need to read it, easy enough to compare with existing images.
At the same time, I am sure most media organisations DO actually have staff who CAN read Arabic, so there wouldn't be a need to "grab someone off the street to read it" anyway.
-
While I am not a fan of the PM I think he spoke well. It is difficult in these circumstances for politicians to not seem vacuous in what they say, given that they are not the front line of the response.
They inevitably run the risk of being seen to be looking for the limelight however, if they were to say nothing they would be accused of 'lacking leadership', or something equally banal.
One of the strengths of our system is when politicians act in a genuinely bi-partisan way in responding to such issues. On that basis, I think the response of the Opposition Leader was also creditable.
Living in Melbourne I am acutely aware that this could as easily have happened hear, or in any other major Australian city. "There but for..." Etc ought to be the attitude of every Australian today.
In that context therefore it is disappointing to see the partisan cheap shots being made by some.
Out of respect for those affected can we not leave the usual 'hating' out of it for once.

Very easy to say but without doing some homework first could end very badly. You always have to take the worse case scenario and work from there. I can think of a number of reason why not to take a shot without knowing some facts to start with, of course unless you want it to blow up in your face

What I don't understand is why it is all over the news. Yes, I guess it is news, but there has to be some train of thought that if there's no advertisement of it, it would lose some of it's shine. I also understand that it would be all over social media in a flash. I just hope all the hostages will be fine.

Agreed, the amount of media coverage on the telly and rolling coverage on nine msn and the like just play into these peoples hands and give them the exposure they want.
If they just had a complete media " blackout " I wonder if it would still be dragging out?

I think this is more a case of a looney acting alone inspired by world events

Exactly what we have been saying. If the media made a decision not to give any air to this it would be all over now, one way or the other. But that would never happen, the media love this type of thing, this is what they live for. Go and watch the movie Nightcrawler. Kevin

Guys, we have started to receive numerous reports on this thread,
Please tone it down, At the moment I don't see the need to locked/delete it, however it will be if it continues.

Actually......
I think all the replies so far have been well considered and reasonable.
No one has gone over the top, we don't know the facts yet.
Unlike many other social media and media outlets.
Just goes to show that those on here are in the upper ten percentile of IQ.

Ok, we have the point that you think this is tracking along without issue, yes that is fine but we have had 3 complaints about this tread already. You may have noticed nothing has been deleted yet because it is our view things are currently fine but walking a very fine line. You have your opinion which is more than fine with others thinking different for various reasons. Bushmans post is just a friendly reminder to keep this respectful on all levels. Should this not be heeded, you know the rest........

So many experts - so many views - most wrong.
Terry, as a number have pointed out on this thread, much of the media 'get off' on hyping events such as this.
Similarly, others like to be 'experts' on police tactics / if and in what circumstances the military would become involved, etc.
IMO both contribute more 'heat' than 'light'.

He is doing his job. I would be pretty disappointed if the PM didn't make a comment and appearance to reassure the people of Australia. We get the message you don't like the PM as your previous post about was edited by the mods.
Lets just keep this thread on track, the mods have warned us a couple of times. Your negative comments arn't helping.

Very true..........
Thoughts and prayers are with both hostages and operators on scene.
History says that this may not end "well" but we also need to ensure that, regardless of the outcome, any investigation doesn't fall into the witch hunt category.
And lastly, while some may think a FMJ is the best remedy, I think it's important to realise that the are others on the board who believe that mediation and negotiating are the only methods that should be considered. We all have our personal points of view, let's just make sure that we are all being considerate of our mates view point as well.
Let's all take the stance that we want the hostages out safely.
Muzza, I think there should be a tongue firmly planted in Dales cheek! Emoticons people!

Actually my post was edited due to me calling him an inappropriate name...sorry for that but it was all pretty tounge in check.
He just annoys the bejesus out of me when he repeats himself at least twice a sentence and is condescending and patronizing between that.sure he's got a job to do but if he dosn't like criticism or people having a bit of fun at his idiosyncrasies he's in the wrong business.

Hope the hostages are safe. No news at the moment about them.
If the so called cleric had a firearm, how did he get it?
He is under suspicion for the murder of his wife, surely his firearms license would have been revoked?
-
Siege is over but not a good ending. Tragically at least hostage is dead and several others are seriously injured. Luckily the gunman, an Iranian immigrant by the name of Monis, has been killed as he appears to have shot the hostages. He is the same POS who was involved with the murder of his former wife and child molestation.
He also sent letters to our soldiers and their families who had fought in Afganistan accusing them of being murderers. He was obviously a worthless piece of scum who was acting alone and has been disassociated from the Muslim community. This has been a terrible and very sad time for the hostages whom I am sure will carry scars for life from this. Our thoughts are with them.
-
Yep not a fantastic end, thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.
Dazzler and achjimmy were fairly accurate in the end.
A man was seen running with his hands up before a crowd of hostages following fleeing from the cafe just after 2am. A short burst of gunfire and flash grenades were heard as police stormed the building before declaring the siege over at around 2.45am.
The gunman, 50-year-old Man Haron Monis who was known to police as a self-styled preacher of Islamic state on bail for an accessory to murder charge, was also pronounced dead at hospital.
-
Very tragic for the loss of innocent lives. Of course the "do gooders" should be happy that every chance to negotiate with this idiot was given? Rather than take an opportunity and dispatch him to the next world when they could. They will now all be bleating about him being inspired by abbotts "team Aust" comments and basically blaming everybody else for his crimes and victimizing him. And a real question needs to be asked why he wasn't deported over the harassment of veteran families and why he was out on bail from a serious criminal charge!
Good to see the Muslim community as a whole has condemned him and I would have expected nothing less than that from them, this idiot and his beliefs don't represent them.
I hope the authorities who presumably took down his poisonous Facebook page with some 14,750 likes now execute 14,750 search warrants and investigate them before this can possibly happen again? Or are we encroaching on their civil liberties?
-
Yep, that's sad innocents got hurt, but it ended they way I expected it would. He was going to die, weather shot by police or other means, he was going to die. He went there knowing that.
-
Hug your Family , Honour the lost by making your Australian way of life as good as possible for all . Don't let the Bastards win
-
In a situation like this, why do our laws give all the power to the terrorist? A sniper should have taken him out in the first 10 minutes. They had plenty of opportunity for a clean shot.
Human rights, political correctness blah blah blah, the people who right our p1ss weak laws need to wake upto themselves. 2 innocent people are dead, 2 families have lost loved ones and many others traumatised.

He was just a nutter who should not have been out on bail or should have been deported years ago. If the Police had killed the nutter at the start then what if there were bombs as he said and he detonated them? What if he had his gun aimed towards one of the hostages and his gun went off and killed that hostage? It is easy to say what should have happened after the event. But I think we all feel like what Snapman007 Has said.
(And it is a shame someone had to bring their very strong political views into this thread. But some people do get blinded by one sided politics. Thank you mods for editing that thread.)
Just feel for the victims. But now we need to get on as normal as we will never be able to prevent these type of people (nutters/murderers) doing what they want. We all have certain freedoms in this great country and do not want too many more restrictions on these. Or do we? Kevin

Yeah yeah, he is not the first nutter, and won't be the last. Look at port author, Westfield in Sydney just as 2 examples. Nutters have being here years and will continue.

RIP to the 2 innocent people killed...
**** Koshi and his show, they showed in an endless loop 4-6 people running out of the café while being "LIVE" from the scene and they made it look like there was 150 people running out of the café they played it that long..
Edit: This scene was the one.. on an endless loop in the time it took the local shop to make about 8 coffees infront of me, then mine and serve everyone

How come people get prison time for pathetic charges and someone who stabs thier wife multiple times then sets her on fire I wandering the streets.he wasn't even under survalence aparantly as he managed to obtain a gun and committed crimes post a com place to murder.
Realy in my opinion the blame lies solely with the justice department and how yet another time bomb was out on bail

Oooooooo....... I just read that stuff on him....
"A reporter at Tuesday morning's press conference posed the uncomfortable question about the Martin Place siege that will now surely become the subject of further investigation: "How was this gunman free on bail?".
Man Haron Monis, a self-styled sheikh shot dead by police in the early hours of Tuesday morning, was before the courts on two separate and serious matters: more than 40 sexual assault charges involving seven alleged victims; and as an accessory to the murder of his former partner.
He died seven years after first coming to the attention of police, when he penned poisonous letters to the family of Australian soldiers killed in the Middle East .
Monis, 50, was given bail at Penrith Local Court on December 12 last year after being charged with being an accessory before and after the fact to the 2013 murder of his former partner, mother-of-two Noleen Hasyon Pal.
His then partner, Amirah Droudis, is also charged with the murder of Ms Pal, who was stabbed multiple times in April last year and set alight in a western Sydney unit block."
Then again are people surprised anymore at what the courts do???
-
I'm never surprised at what lawyers and courts do....baffled yes but not suprised

was a bit surprised at the end firefly looked like kids going in for attack rather than trained professionals taking out a lone gunman.
imo a one shot sniper attack would be more professional and end with a better result.
and fully agree that the media feed us regurgitated dribble to no end.
one good thing i heard this morning is that judges should be held accountable for their decisions
my 2 cents

They responded to an immediate unplanned escalation which is why it was so confusing hence so many flash bangs going off which prevented them going in quicker. You can see the cop at the door unable to enter till they stopped.
If it was planned it would have been surgical.
I thought they did ok given the circumstances.

It's not Hollywood.
What if you miss?
What if he actually had explosives and they are rigged to a dead mans switch?
What if he had a nearby accomplice who would trigger them if he got shot?
What if he actually had a fellow bad guy in there that entered earlier sitting quietly having a coffee with an explosive vest on waiting for his mate to be shot?
Until you have those answers you can only react to the situation as it evolves.

just had a coffee/team meeting in the coffee shop with the tele on, the tv people were now starting to rivet on about the blame game - the cops ... 'should they have acted faster'...
not that they could have...

I'll respectfully disagree with you on this one Dazzler. I personally think they got it tragically wrong.
One of the great things about Australia is that we can have differing opinions, neither necessarily right or wrong but we have the absolute right to them.

Hopefully the facts will slowly come out and then we can all share views on what should or should not have had happened in the light of the truth.
The fact is we know very little and do not have the experience or training of those making these calls.
We can all be heroes and hindsight experts behind a keyboard, I for one am glad no one I know was involved in anyway.
I also hope none of the MySwag family had people involved too.

All the investigations, inquiries, and what ifs wont bring back the victims in this, or the effect it will have on their families and the rest of society. At this point, my opinion won't change anything, so its time to move on. The best way I can respect those involved is to say nothing other than my condolences.
-
Yep, I agree, I think this thread has reached its use by date. Time to move on folks.
