Ok as you know I have researching options for a rear bar twin jerry and spare wheel.
Now I havew narrowed the list to 2
MCC - $1890.00 I like the price point the bar is nice to look at with clean lines, cant see one in flesh though, bolts above existing towbar, reasonably untested in rough terrain as I cant find any reviews.Resale value would be sub $1000. no gas struts.
Kaymar $3500 I don't like the price point ;D but the bar is a fully incorporated towbar, well tested and second to none in terms of strength as it bolts the chassis where tow bar normally would (this seems to be the big difference) clean lines and good swing arms with gas struts.
So over 5 years the mcc will cost $31.50 P/M =$1890 resale of $800ish SO $1890 - $800 = $1090..... $1090 / 60 mths = $18.10
Over 5 years the Kaymar $58.30 P/M = $3500 resale $1800ish SO $3500.00 -$1800 = $1700............ $1700/60mths = $28.33
So from my calcs I am talking the difference of a cup of coffee per month over the 5 years.
More $$ upfront but the best bar avail with zero risk and guaranteed resale value judging by my attempts to find one ;D ;D ;D
Some one please confirm or deny my logic ;D ;D ;D ;D
Don't get me wrong $1500 is alot of coin extra but I want to buy once buy right and not have any issues.

Theo.
didnt you look at my MCC rear bar at Nymboida?
-
Did you consider the possible value (or lack of) added to the vehicle if you sell with the bar?
Kaymar - probably add something to the right buyer ... the other one, dunno.
-
Theo.

Yes I did mate, and it seemed quite well built, my issue is that I cant find a report about one that has travelled 10-20-30Ks with a tyre and 2 jerry's swinging off the back of on dirt roads.
I guess as a consumer I want to see the runs on the board so to speak, as a bar they look great and well priced but as twin swinger I,m just not sure.
It just comes down to guaranteed performance , I cant find a report of a failed Kaymar.
A rear bar is a big investment if you plan on travelling some of the roughest roads in aust, so the $1500 I save may end up costing me alot more than that. I raelly want to take the chance and save the $$$ but the little voice inside my head is already singing out "poor man pays twice" and with a rear bar a simple crack can be be big issues just the hassle of a remove /re-fit would see your $$ burnt up.
I am thinking 3.5K =best you can get 2K =unknown longevity.
Yeah the whole aussie made comes into a bit but that's not my main point (rightly or wrongly) I am more looking at proven performance in the harshest environment .

Nothing worse when your gut tells you to go Kaymar and your head full of common sense says go the cheaper option.
I always go gut feeling these days.

Ever heard of getting what you pay for?
I've had a Kaymar bar with twin 33" MTZ's hanging off the back for just on ten years, It's been across the Simpson, up the Cape, the Vic High Country and lots of trips around the south Coast (NSW). It's been dragged over heaps of rock drop offs and except for a bit of paint missing it's as good as new :cup:.
Cheers Dave
-
I have a Kaymar, they are as heavy as fuk.. I'd be looking at other options.

Dave,
As someone who sells solar I sure have ...... :D
Your exp with kaymar is what I keep reading online and talking with people . Hence my lening towards them .
That's a pretty good wrap :cup:

But at least you know, what ever the bar hits, stays hit. It won't effect the bar at all.
I am getting a colour coded bar and intend to only fit the spare when we go away.

I have a 4.7ltr V8 with Koni raids , think I will be right with the weight .

This is my thoughts colour code bar but not swingers
Jet ;D
-
I will be getting the spare wheel mount too, but only fit it when we go away. No point around town and I like I can access the boot without the need to swing open the spare first.
-

The power is not the issue, you may have to think again on th suspension though...

It is also 100 odd kg of payload taken up. Bar with swing arms.

Why so
KTRR HD springs / poly airs / 90 series raids not sure what would be an improvement over that.
-
Sorry I might not have been clear , I am not confused about weather to put a rear bar on or not..just the brand /prices.
I have the payload and the car to move the payload so all good.
Jet ;D ;D

Go the kaymar because every time you look at the cheap alternative or you have a problem with it you will kick yourself. Go on I know you want to BUY IT

With cheap imports (just like solar panels) flooding the market you may find in 5 years
someone interested in a rear bar will be thinking the same about the difference in price between your secondhand bar or the new cheapo, so your $1800.00 resale might end up a lot lower in another 5 years. $1200 to $1500 might be closer to the mark, it's only a
little more coffee.

Yeah mate under stand that. Kaymar are bloody heavy. Strong yes, quality yes, but heavy, compared to some others.
But if your not worried about the weight go for it man. They are good
Edit : just giving you something else to consider that is all.
-
Something else to consider, the missus would kill me if she had to swing tyres out of the way to open the back door to put the shopping or pram in the back. She already hates it with the drawers in now.
-
You could always save even more coin by building your own, I know a dodgy bloke who built one for the back of his troopy.
Can't wait to see a plastic car hangin of the back of it ;D

hey buddy sorry was not having a dig ;D ;D ;D Think I have worn my brain out today and had a mini snap >:D
My bad
you and Lost did get thinking I should at least confirm 100% the weight of the bar as it incorporates the tow bar also got figures from 60-118kg so need to find out 100% Dad reckons $3.5K buys a fair trailer to cart my crap LOL ;D ;D
Jet ;D ;D
-
All good man!
Your old man is on the money also. In fact you and your old man are pretty handy with a welder. Why not make one? Mine cost a grand and is 70kg with twin tyre carriers.
-
just buy the Kaymar - sounds like you already know you want to get it, if thats what your "leaning towards" dont talk yourself out of it. youve done the research.
-
Ever considered ARB bar?
-
keep holding out for the secondhand one....i got my Kaymar rearbar (single wheel swing away at the time only) for $1300 all up delivered to my door from Melbourne to Brisbane several years back (delivery was about $150 of that price i think from memory). that bar has seen plenty of the outback, bounced off of rocks in 4wd parks and never let me down yet. like mentioned above already, mines slightly rough looking, but it still is as it should be 8) 8)
try jumping on LCOOL forum and putting a wanted ad in their classified section, that's where i got mine from.
-
Over on the lcool forum there is a big thread about rear bars, I am sort of looking as well and most people have been saying the rayslarr rear bars are pretty much just as good as the kaymar.
The arb bars however have not been rated that good at all one guy said even the arb guy said to go with a kaymar or rayslarr. something to do with the swing arms don't latch properly after time and don't stay true.
-
your theory (calcs) are wrong
you either already have a towbar, in which case you can sell to further improve the kaymar $/month
or you don't have a towbar in which case the savings not having to buy a towbar make the kaymar bar better
also I sold my TJM rear bar many years ago off my 105 series GXL, the guy that purchased was going to modify the mounts to fit his IFS cruiser, even though the chassis are different.
not a bad way of going IF you already have a towbar, i.e don't limit yourself to IFS rear protection bars/ swingers, if the towing duties are taken care of (major weight/ safety concern) with a proper towbar
-
Maybe a stoopit question Theo, but could you not get something custom made for less $'s. ???
We've got a gun welder/fabricator here in town and stuff me sideways if he couldn't build something that would do the job for less money.
There has to someone around your way that could do it.
-

......with 1 spare, mine added 42kg......
-
Take the resale out of the equasion unless your vehicle is exactly what someone is after it will be on year k's and condition price based when sold.
A mate of mine who values uses a simple 20% formula meaning if you bolt 10k of acessories on he will simpley add 2k to the offer

Agree if you leave attached, but if you separate the bar from vehicle then the resale will be closer to above

So your full kaymar bar with 1 swing arm and 1 nissan spare Tyre and wheel weighs 42kg in total?
-
So your full kaymar bar with 1 swing arm and 1 nissan spare Tyre and wheel weighs 42kg in total?
No. It ADDED 42kg.
The Kaymar bar weighs 62kg, and 1 swing arm weighs 11kg, totalling 73kg.
The original bumper + tow bar that came off weighed 31kg.
The spare wheel doesn't come into the calcs.
-
Got ya.
-
Kaymar, and if your in no hurry hold out for a second hand one. I love ours,it is Erin's daily driver, she swears at the latches but lives with it.

That's one the reasons I want the ARB bar.
Easier to open and close.

Does anybody on my swag own a rayslarr rear bar or know of anyone with 1. Are you or they happy with it. I like the finish around the guards for the prado more then the mcc bar and the pricing is more along along the lines I want to spend

Yer mate I have one on my GU patrol, ill try and get a pic for you over the next day or so, real busy at the minute. That said, I have no probs at all with my rear bar, I ordered the bar with 2 wheel carriers.
After researching it death, I basically decided for what I was prepared to pay it is fantastic value for money, not only is it made very well, they haven't skimped on the size of the steel, that's not to say that its made with oversize steel, but more in line with what you would expect of a rear bar to be made of. Of memory its 4 and 6mm steel.
TBH its in the class of the other name brand rear bars, but that's just me.
The finish is fantastic, its a little different in its basic appearance from most but all the same I think it sets it apart.
They have a great reputation across a number of forums, they were awesome to deal with, couldn't do enough for me. I fitted it myself and when I did I rang them and they were only to happy to provide support over the phone.
I haven't given it a flogging yet, but have confidence that it will hold its own when I do, I have a couple of mates who get stuck right into there wheeling and have given them a bashing on banks and ruts, and other then a few scrapes and marks, it has performed wheel.
I would defo recommended you give them a call and have a yarn, I think you will find them very helpful. The best thing is you don't have to cough up your first born child for it.....Kaymar ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Hope this helps.
Swanny :D
-
Swanny thanks for your input mate as I said I do like the finish of them on the prado I"ll be fitting it myself to, oh and dear old jetcrew but I haven't told him yet ;D. Will definitely be giving them a ring.
-
The raslarr looks very strong but the one for 100 just seems so chunky and agricultural compared to the kaymarr but it,s also $1300 cheaper.
I reckon the 100 series bar looks the worst of all the range .
will hunt for more pics ;D

That's a real shame mate, to be honest I would agree that if you are going to put a rear bar on you not only want it to be strong, but it also needs to look decent on the vehicle.
Keep searching, a kaymar will pop up.
