Keen on a sit-on-top kayak available at Rays and was wondering if anyone has any inside info on the frequency of their VIP (26.5% off) sales?
Any idea of when to expect one of these sales to pop up?
 in advance ;D
-
Try just before X Mas or the next trading day after ;D Or take the best price to Anaconda >:D
-
Pretty sure I got a flyer the other day.
Can't remember the date though.
Seem to be about 3 or 4 a year.
-
I bought one from BCF, if you register online you can put the product on your "wishlist and then it alerts you when it goes on sale.... good gig I thought
-
Unfortunately Rays is the only mob who supply the kayak I'm after (Finn Gizmo Fisher) in my area (Geelong).
Will just have to be patient I guess.
-
Gday Benduro,
Have you looked at buying direct? Not sure how the prices compare but the Finns are made in WA. I would imagine that Rays would have a mark up.

Have looked at it and they (Finn) are already some $300 dearer and thats without adding shipping.
Rays are apparently looking to clear the remaining kayaks @ $699, my budget is about $500 hence why I am hoping for a sale!
-
Have a look at these

Starts tomorrow and goes until........?
Annoys me I never get these notices. I used to but haven't for ages now. They must've realised the only time I ever by something is during these sales.

Oztents 20% off?? :)
-
Can anyone confirm if there is a 25% off sale on in Sydney? Like others I haven't received any notificiation.....but here's hoping.......I have a new fridge on the Christmas shopping list!
-
Got mine in FNQ too.
Interesting! I've just been looking at generators - I wonder if they're included in this sale at all? Would really like a Yamaha EF2000, and Rays only seem to stock the Kipor models though.
Thanks for the heads-up!
Matto :)
-
Got the Sydney flyer.
Only a reference to a catalogue with specials.
No across the board discount.

Reading the Flyer as we "Text"...
25% off Storewide 8th - 10th December 2011.
*** 25% off storewide applies to full $RRP***
This is in QLD.
Steve
-
Only $100 off oztents?? :( jam it, can do better on ebay
-
Well, after dropping in to our Rays, they tell me that there's no 25% off, or VIPs at all. All it is, is a catalogue sale, which is already running. IE, the Kipor generators are $100 off, as marked on the ticket. This is all they're doing in the near future. I even checked with two staff members.
On the upside, I discovered that Rays DO carry the Yamaha generators, so when they do have a sale, I might be able to pick one up then. Tempted by the cheaper price of the Kipors, but figure I'd best stick with known quality.
Not sure if other people have better luck than this, or if it's just the dodgy staff in our useless store - it certainly wouldn't surprise me (and it wouldn't be the first time).
Thanks!
Matto :)
-
Same in Vic 25% off RRP storewide. 8-10 December
-
Hi Alesco (Steve),
Would you mind looking at the catalogue to confirm if the discount apples to Engel fridges (sometimes these are excluded >:()
Thanks,
Sullyman.

You went in one day early!
The VIP 25% discount is on 8/9/10 December.

Yeah - I asked them about the VIP sale that starts tomorrow. They said there's no such thing - there's the current catalogue sale, and that's the only event they had in their calendar. They said there's no VIP sales coming up, and no 25% sales.
As mentioned above, it might just be the staff at the Cairns store, but so far I can't see any solid evidence to take in tomorrow and gets me some discounts. Can anyone link me to an actual flyer or catalogue with the details? I can't see anything in the normal catalogue?
Thanks!
Matto :)

What it says on the letter to VIP Card Members only is.
Word for Word.
Please keep this secret offer on the down-low as this special deal is only available to our top club members.
All you need to do is present your club card at the registers and 25% off storwide is all yours.
Blah blah blah
Please note: this deal is so quiet, the exclusive club price won't be displayed in store (the discount code has been applied to your card directly).
Can't vouch for any particular item but remember look on the packaging for the RRP.
This is the catch , they may sell an item for $78 and the RRP might be $100 which means the the 25% off will mean paying $75.
You get the drift...
It may not be as good as it looks.
Steve.
-
Thanks Steve - that clears it right up for me.
I've got one of the original VIP cards, and get the email newsletter, but I don't think I'm actually a VIP member. I've done the signup online now, but obviously will mss this one. Which is a shame - id have bought a generator if it was going to be $600 off! Ahh well - next time Gadget!
Thanks again!
Matto :)

With all this discounting these majors stores do constantly, it makes you wonder how much margin they are actually making on the RRP.
Case in point - I brought a bike from Anaconda for the wife for Christmas last week and it was marked down from $599 to $299. Compared to other bikes at other stores we had looked at it was competitively priced at $599, and an absolute bargain for $299. Whilst trying to seal the deal with the sales guy I thought I'd be cheeky and ask for a helmut to be thrown in too. He didn't even bat an eye lid and said "sure", go pick the helmut what you want. The one we picked was price tagged at $79.95....
Either the recommended retail price is set rediculously high from the start, or they are simply making Shite loads from this chinese made stuff. I'm never going to pay RRP for anything at these stores ever again as it seems wasy too easy to get significant discounts by simply asking the question.

I went into Kmart the other night to buy a camera for my daughter for christmas. It was $89.00 and not on special I asked for a discount he said no. I asked for a memory card to be thrown in he said no. I said I will go to Harvey Norman of Good Guys and walked off. I have never asked a department store like Kmart, Myer etc for discounts before and haven't heard of them going along with the idea but I though you don't ask you don't get and I didn't get in the end anyway.
-
or they are simply making ****e loads from this chinese made stuff.
Winner
-
Bugger, I don't have my card anymore :-[
From memory though they can get your details up on the system when checking out.
Will see how I go when I head in this arv'.
-
This is all starting to get a bit confusing - spoke to one of the guys at the Townsville store this morning and he knows nothing about any special VIP sales or 25% off sales. The only thing he could offer me was the normal catalogue sale starting today.
Would be interesting to see if someone has actually found a store that is honouring this mystery sale..........
-
Nothing on their website either ???
-
Apparantly it only shows up once the card is swiped.
Wouldn't be the first store not to tell the customers that a sale is coming up.
Stops the staff telling their friends or customers that if they wait a few days they'll get the item cheaper.
All the big department stores keep the special sales from their staff.
Ask them to price something and get them to swipe your "VIP" card.
That might show up the sale.
Matto PM me and we'll see whats possible. ;D I'm not buying anything from this sale.
I use the same store as you.
Steve.
-
Hi Alesco (Steve),
Would you mind looking at the catalogue to confirm if the discount apples to Engel fridges (sometimes these are excluded >:()
Sullyman - This isn't a catalog it was a letter sent out to VIP Club Members.
I didn't pay to be in the club I just joined it online and they sent out the card.
I would say that without the actual "VIP"card then you won't be able to get the "discount" such that it is.
Some items will probably be cheaper in the specials catalogue than 25% off the RRP.
Sorry Matto it says you have to present the actual card at the register.
Steve.
-
Thanks for the offer Steve - mighty generous of you.
To everyone else, Steve has it right. A letter was sent out to some Rays and BCF members, giving you the 25% discount store wide. I'm a member of both, and I didn't get one. To redeem the discount you need to present your card AND fill out your email address. So I'm guessing they're targetting the members that don't have an email address registered. The letter says they're going to be moving to electronic communications, so I'm guessing that's why.
How do I know this? Because thanks to my in-laws, I'm now the proud owner of a Yamaha ef2000si generator, for a $550 discount off the rrp. No issues with the store, just had to show the card and they confiscated the letter, so if you are going to buy something, get everything you want I the one hit. One dude at the other register was loading up on gift cards - he must have had close to $1000 worth of them.
All in all, I'm a happy chappy.
Thanks all for the heads up, and again, thanks for the offer Steve.
Cheers!
Matto :)

Thanks mate! I figured if anyone here would appreciate it, you would ;D ;D 8).

Should also point out, as alluded to above, this was bought from BCF, with a BCF VIP letter. Now, to fill it up and test it out!
Good luck to everyone else with one of these letters - a perfect time to grab a big $$$ item for Christmas, or just to stock up on gift cards so you can save money in future.
Thanks!
Matto :)
-
Good score Matto... :cup:
Steve.
(I'm already sick of Christmas) Bah Humbug...
-
Went in this arv' and picked up the Finn Gizmo Fisher kayak I was after at the VIP 25% off.
Spoke to the salesman and said that I had received a letter stating that I was eligible for 25% off and asked if it applied to kayaks? The answer... Yes, which one are you after? Told him it was the Finn which I new was already reduced from $1049 to $699 - 25% = $525 ;D Was also told that only 20 000 members were sent letters Aust' wide.
Was able to make purchase without my card and without the letter ;D
Stoked as this is what I've been after as it is a versatile craft and comes pre-loaded with backrest, knee straps, bottle holder and bottle, paddle, paddle holder, paddle leash, twin hatches, rod holder, net holder, tackle box and an anchor with rope :D
Here is a pic from Finn's website:
-
Sounds like you got better than 25% off RRP.
Another good score :cup:
Steve.
-
Was also told that only 20 000 members were sent letters Aust' wide.
Would love to know what the criteria for getting the letter was. Seems some VIPs are more important than others. I should call and complain, see if I can get another gift card out of them.
-
Probably just our culture and breeding. ;D
Steve.
-
Great pickup Benduro! Looks like a great toy!
A while back both Rays and BCF had camper trailers on display - oztrail tents on local gal trailers. Basic setups for sure, but brand new for $6-$7k. I'd love to see someone pick one of them up with their 25% off card! You probably wouldn't be welcome back in the store though... :D
Still, all things considered its probably quite a cheap way to collect repeat customers' email addresses - they're worth real money in the long term. Their marketing dept would spend significantly more than this is costing them on each and every tv ad.
Anyone else score themselves a bargain??? Post it up and tell us about it!!!
Thanks!
Matto :)

Just back from Rays where I 'tested' the 25% off. I bought something small and said at the checkout I thought it was 25% off for VIP members. They said do you have a letter I said no, they took the 25% off anyway. Might go back tomorrow and get a WeberQ :)
-
I should go into the Cairns store and claim discrimination as I never got a letter. ;D
Mark
-
I didn't get that Anaconda one either despite getting the catalogue yesterday LOL. Lucky I know they have nothing I want. They've really done downhill IMO since they started selling little other than their house brands.
-
Went into rays in cairns and they mentioned unless you got an email that you print out you don't get the 25% off. She advised that they selected VIP that spend a lot of money in the shop.
Any one want to email me the letter so I can get the discount ;D
Mark
-
Bugger, you could find another Rays or another sales assistant :)
-
Interesting, I have spent over $2000.00 at Rays in the last 12 Months and I didnt get a letter, I think maybe its time to look else where.
I wonder what they class as spend a lot.
Trevor
-
I agree and will send an email to them and see what happens.
Mark
-
As a VIP member I sent Rays a message last night asking what was the criteria for receiving the deal as we have spent plenty of money there also.... no reply yet...
-
Supercheap Group aka SCA, BCF, Rays, Rebel etc are usually pretty sharp with their marketing. I guess they wanted to try something different. For people like Matto it has worked out great for others not so much. I am a regular at my Rays so they gave it to me even when they probably shouldn't have. With the Internet you can't keep anything a secret so everyone knows it is on. There must be a huge rush when they have their discount days as everybody waits for them. I actually like the group, I like their bricks & mortar and online approach. This year I have probably bought more from SCA on their online discount/free delivery days than I have from their bricks and mortar. It will be interesting to see what their next marketing move is.
-
Well after reading about this I went express to my BCF with a couple of hundred bucks worth of things- xmas pressies and stuff I just want ;D Anyway, got to the checkout mentioned the promo, the cashier went and spoke to another and returned with "sorry unless you have the letter..." I then said "oh well, too bad" and left my stuff on the counter.
Rang this morning to ask about the promo and why it was for some and not others and was told by the manager that it was the Club BCF (or VIP promo team that sends the emails) that randomly selected 150 VIP numbers each store via computer generation. She even said that some of her employees got the deal!
Anyway, that's the story i got... but no goodies @ 25% off ???
-
I've spent about $500 in the last two years but only about $30 in the last year.
Obviously the checkout lady has no clue as to why anyone got he letter.
I got the letter (not email).
Steven.
Interesting to find out what the reason really is....
-
I sent a reasonably terse email to Rays re the selection process and mentioned the discussion on a forum (not identified) and said I would post either their reply or NON reply for the forum members to read, this is what I got in reply:
"Thank you for your email regarding the VIP direct mail letter that was sent to members of the Ray’s VIP club.
In terms of criteria, we took all of our top customers from the database (who had not provided an email address) and randomly sent some of those VIP members the offer. The intention was to get those members to join the email database as we ensure email members are kept in the know of all our VIP sales and events.
As you are a part of our VIP member email database keep an eye on your inbox and rest assured, we will be sending further offers like this one in the near future.
If you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us again.

At least they responded to your email...
-
You should email her back and let her know that while there's no doubt those who received the letter are happy, there's plenty of customers who didn't receive it yet know about it and aren't happy. Not exactly a great marketing move IMO.

I sent a reply back to stir the pot a little more and received this reply, my reply email is at the bottom.
"Thank you for your email and I appreciate your honest feedback.
In hindsight, given what we have learnt from this offer we may have done things differently, these learnings will be incorporated into future offers.
Please be assured that there will be upcoming offers in our Ray’s VIP email newsletter giving exclusive offers to members of this database.
Have a great day ?

Thanks for the reply and I understand what you were trying to do and there's no doubt those who received the letter are happy, but there's hundreds of customers who didn't receive it yet know about it and aren't happy. Not exactly a great marketing move when everything that happens is discussed freely on forums. This topic went like wildfire and a lot of people aren’t too pleased with the way it was done. Hope you have something in the pipeline to counter the bad publicity it has done.

I guess one option may be to scrap the idea of offering discounts altogether........ Damned if you do, damned if you dont.

That's true rotare, however, I think the intent of rewarding VIPs is a good one, you just can't pick and choose (that's called discrimination). Now I'm not saying they're tight wads, but having VIP nights or offering specific discounts to all VIPs has been done before, but this was just an ill-thought marketing ploy.
Just my opinion

Shows the value they put on access to your email address...

Sometimes they would be quicker writing what IS included as there are so many 'exceptions'
