REAL OR FAKE CHRISTMAS TREE?
« on: November 30, 2010, 10:22:53 AM »
So which is it?

We always have a real tree - I love the smell of pine in the house.

It reminds me of camping! It's a little extra effort but it's definitely worth it.

You?

A real tree is nice and using a chainsaw adds to the fun, but from and environmental perspective planting pine trees in place of natural forest is a bad thing as they are acidic and prevent any other plants growing in the area ,thus greatly reducing the biological diversity in the area. Fake trees on the outer hand are made from plastics and petrochemicals which also are damaging to the environment. It could be said that while the real tree is growing it is still a tree and could help offset your carbon footprint, but to counter that it could be said that a plastic tree is a once in 10year purchase to over that time the environmental damage is minimal
Pines are naturally oily and present a high fire risk especially as they start to dry out on the other hand plastic ones too are flammable plus the wire used to stiffen the branches is conductive.
There is much less ongoing maintenance with a plastic tree as real trees continually shed their needles and the trees themselves are a pain to dispose of as they are unsuitable for mulching. Plastic trees on the other hand never go back into the box they came in.
It can be said that the aroma of a real tree can remind some of the outdoors but the reality is the smell is not that of native Australian forests and rarely do we camp in pine plots.
As you can see there are a number of arguments for each case but in the end it is simply a matter of personal choice

In the end Christmas is only applicable to the superstitious…. A much more relative celibration is festivus…

I find it's a good mental process to have a sacrificial burning of the tree - after Christmas. After you've seen all of the family and realised that you don't want to see them again for another year. Burn that tree!  ;D

Tree huggers love it.

Hi,
   One each way for us.
I'm the original Bah & Humbug xmas-free-zone, but SWMBO goes for all all the trimmings.
She has the fibre optical twinkle lights, I get to camp under mine a few days later.
cheers

With the ever increasing size of the hole in the o-zone layer, anyone who condones the cutting down of a live plant for the sole purpose of decorating their house for a short lived festivity, needs cancelling.  The sooner people realise the imminent demise of the earth and all the creatures on it, will be a direct result of the blind fashion in which we treat the living plants and animals which currently assist with keeping the native pendulum balanced.  Every single tree, albeit large or small, assists in its own little way to keep this planet we all call home, habitable.

If you have no regard for the future of the planet, and its inhabitants, then by all means stick your head in a bucket of sand, and pretend there isn't a problem, and go and buy, or cut down one of our living saviours, and use it for a few weeks to keep a very few happy.

I bet none of you who use live/dead trees ever thought of planting one in its place, or even better, using a potted variety for use each year round.

Why not use no tree !!!!!

You don't need a tree to crack a coldie and celebrate the end of year holidays !!!

Although I must admit, it looks like a nice mist in the top photo !! ;D ;D

Real Xmas trees dont grow in Australia  , a real Xmas tree is a pine tree sourced from the Black Forrest in Germany ,  a Tannenbaum naturally shaped into a cone by the weight of winter snow ,in  Australian pine the branches reach for the sun and never get the real  Xmas tree shape.

Hey Dan just grab one of the trees down near D'albora marina - you know, one of the ones that no one poisnoned a few years ago to not improve their view over the water!
