power for fridge
« on: November 25, 2010, 02:41:37 PM »
Has anyone used a jump starter pack rated as 800 amp to run there fridge, the jump start pack has an aux cigarette lighter out put so i am presuming it should be ok to run the car fridge (waeco 60lt) for a few days. i normally run the fridge of a waeco power pack but i have lent it out.
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

You should be fine however I suspect the jump start pack won't be a deep cycle battery so don't discharge it too far otherwise it may not recover.
I owe, I owe, it’s off to work I go…

some of those jump packs only run a 17ah sla battery, so dont expect to much from it.

Heavy duty Bushranger Power Tank probably one of the best options for running a fridge

We have the large bush ranger power tank. You'll get a day from it if your lucky, ie, your not up here at 42 c and down to 32 over night. The issue with them is they are not that quick to charge, mine is 4 amph max. Not sure if they have changed their specs in the last year which is how long I have had the lager one. We also have the 18ampH job which I've had for 7 years now. It's good for nothing these days but was a good little unit for jump starting the Paj if I had to - which i never did.. It won't run my 50ltr for a day in the van parked in the sun for work however the Waeco 39ampH power pack can.. I then charge that with my cteck over night while the fridge is on 240 if I'm say in Derby for a few days for work

Also they are rated usually a CCA Cold Cranking Amps (?), not AmpH so the 800 is not 800 amphours. I think the bush ranger is only 47 ampH or some thing (?)

Hope it's not stuffed when it gets back  :-[

Cheaper alternative is to use a 1OO ah (plus) AGM battery

I really don't think you'll get a couple of days out of it.  One day at best.

I used a 900 amp jump starter on my 60 litre Engel on the way back from King Ash Bay.  The engel bounced a bit in the back of the Colorado on the dirt roads up there and absolutely smashed the 12v bullet plug in the back.  I only had it on for about 4-5 hours while I was driving but it never missed a beat and everything was still frozen when I got back to Mackay.

I wouldn't be without one now.

Cheers

Hi,
use the jump starter for what it's designed for - jump starting,
do it properly and do it once, put in AGM battery (s) for running the fridge (s) and don't worry about it or learn the hard way.....
cranking amps and amp hours are two different things, I'm sure others know better than me,
just my 2c worth
cheers
