oztent RV"s

We were sold on the Oz Tent when we had a little dome tent that was folding down from the wind on Ningaloo Station in WA, whilst our friends in their Oz Tent weren't even pegged down! We ended up getting a RV5 cheap in the old bright green and yellow colours that was used once for an Amway convention near Karratha

Since then, we have got an RV3 (didn't really need the space of the RV5, and also the awning zippers didn't match the older version. We are absolutely sold on the Foxwing as one of our favourite bits of kit, and after seeing the Jet Tent (and yes, it does look like a BW Turbo to us too), if that was around we probably would have bought that instead. We've also got an Ozpod to put all the tent stuff in.

Our biggest reason for switching to a camper trailer from the Oz Tent is pack up time with all of the awnings, plus sleepmats and camp beds. Considering when we go on a big trip we need a good 3 or 4 days of long days of driving to get pretty much anywhere from here (Darwin), we need to be able to pack up as quickly as possible.

The Oz Tent has seen a good bit of terrain - two trips to WA, down to Tassie (in the wettest month of the wettest year since for ever ), plus many smaller trips, and it's still going strong. We don't hesitate to recommend them. NEVER EVER have we had any water get in them, so I think that's a testament to their quality.

I've got an Rv5 with the deluxe side walls, extra front panel (encloses the front peaked walls to create an extra room and adds an additional awning), a brand new fly unopened and i'm thinking of selling the whole thing in an attempt to purchase a CT.

Unfortunately for me i've only managed to use it twice for 3 days total so everything is like new. If anyone is interested can deliver between brisbane and sydney on selected weekends and can take any photos etc.

Does anyone know whether you can attach side panels to the front panel awning on the RV5.

IE: You set up the RV5 with the peaked side panels and then put the front panel on.  Put up the awning on the front panel and then attach two more side panels to the awning?

Our RV3 did two outback trips & many on the beach etc, was perfect in the rain. I cant fault them as a tent, but we bought a CT after watching our mate, who took his CT on the last outback trip, set-up & unpack etc quicker than us with tent, awnings, kitchen etc. I wont get rid of the RV3 though, perfect for the weekends away when you dont want to take the trailer

   Great tent, I find it folds up to a bit over 2m long as there is only about 50mm of space left in a 2100 long trailer.

It is well worth getting the peaked front panels as it gives a bit more storage space, we have 2 RV5's and sleep 3 in each tent on swags,  the bedding almost fills them up with a bit of storage space left across the ends of the swags.

Height can be an issue I am just under 6'2", I still can get changed in the tent with out any trouble but they don't have the height like a dome tent. Plenty of height under the front awning though.

 we certinly like out tents, just wish I can make more time to use them

Jetcrew I bought an RV-5 with all the trimmings a couple of years ago but it remains unused. I'll be listing it in a few days time once I sort out what we bought.

Purchased a rv3 tent recently and the first time it was used one of the back corner stays stiching let go it was a very windy day/night
also when packing up the front poles would not unscrew and had to be packed up at erected height.
Have since replaced poles with sturdy galv poles with ajustment screw and sewn back corner stay.

Will be taking this tent on the cape york trip 2012.

I don't want to hijack the thread and turn it into a brand bashing exercise however I would like to know peoples thought as to why they chose and Oztent RV as opposed to the Blackwolf Turbo.  My wife and I are in the middle of trying to make my decision on which tent to buy and at the moment are leaning towards the Blackwolf, so would be good to hear what others deciding factor was?

Much more room in oztent IMO because its just a big rectangle. Blackwolf is more sloping.

Either would be ok I reckon.

we purchased both an BW270 and an Rv5 with sides and front awning after using both of them once we have now purchased another Rv5 with awning connector
another thing with the BW270 is if you use stretchers it is very tight with two as there is no more room and if cold when you get up you rub against the walls

To me the BW looked fiddly to pack up , other than that a couple of RV5's with flys at $700 each ( one had never been opened, the other was used on one trip to the simpson) looked like too good a bargin to leave behind.

another vote for the single pole tourer tents. we have a oztrail tourer 9plus. Fantastic and quick to set up! We keep the rectangle piece in the top so its even quicker to set up.

We chose the Black Wolf Turbo 240 over the Oz Tent for a few reasons.

- Better headroom (the OzTents roof is sloped down from the front)
- Smaller packed size (fits in the car)
- Canvas fly for a double layer of canvas over the roof in wet conditions

We've had ours for a few years now and used it extensively before the camper came along. Very good unit. We have the heavier duty version, not the 'Lite' version.

I think the answer is really that they are both great tents and you can't really go wrong. I almost bought the BW but the squarer oztent suited my new CT better.

I recently was in the market for a tent and wanted the 30 secound one. The main problem with me was that I have three kids and the RV's are essentially one room, which doesnt work for us. No problem I thought, would just add on to it..yeah right, it became very expensive. Depending upon the size of the original RV with extra rooms, etc it was getting close to $2k....for a tent?WTF.

I did a bit of research and decided on the Black Wolve Turbo Light (270) I did want the 300 but no one had them in stock. I got it on special so under $900. It is a three room tent, that goes up and down quickly - not 30 secounds - the most annoying part is putting in the pegs.

I recently spent about four months camping and used the Black Wolve a lot and was happy with it. It is tough and once weather proofed no issues. Even in high winds, it just sort of sways a bit - other tents were on an angle.

I would go for the 300 as it a little bit bigger. It is easy to shove in the bag once done but it can be heavy and big (so is the RV).

They seem to be on special all around the place at the momment.

Just went to Rays up the road from work to check out the RV3 on display. Very nice.. Very nice indeed... Top quality, no doubt.

I'm a little disappointed in the height as you cant stand up in them... They also had one of the Wolf tents there, but not interested in flys and crap.

Hmmm what to do now, good single pole canvas tents are few and far between for under a billion $.

You can leave the fly off the Black Wolfs. The tent is waterproof without it. Just adds an extra layer of protection in torrential rain.

yea, thats why I liked the 9x9.. put it up adn stay dry, no need to add more.
but might go have a look at the BW.. only need somethign for taking me and one kid with... or I take swag. thus the not wantin to spend a zillion on something to use 2-3 times a year

Lost - Yeah, Oztent do a copy of the Black Wolf too.

The tent is so easy to put up. Take out of bag, straighten 4 hinged poles until they click, get inside and push the the middle of the roof until it all pops into shape. Then it's just one peg in each corner. Max 5 mins if you're taking it easy. I can get ours to this stage in under 3 mins.

Then, if you want to add the fly it's maybe another 3 mins. Just throw it over the roof, connect 4 clips (one each corner) and add a couple of poles to keep the awning up.

Pickup is just the reverse and even quicker.

I love our BW. The packed size suited us better as it easily fits in the back of the car. We've been in some torrential rain and it's never leaked a drip.

Despite the marketing hype, the Oztent is not a 30sec tent. I don't think they include putting in pegs or the poles for the awning in that timing
