Which ride on mower ?
« on: November 11, 2010, 07:30:08 PM »
Hi folks

Started to look at ride on mowers - at the moment I like the John Deere but $$$.

Will also be looking at the Toro zero turns this weekend.

Any advice ?

I have a Husky 48" Cut, 21hp "Lawn Tractor" and it's great - really quick too. I've had it for about 5 years now, bought it new and it has done everything from fetching the mail to towing campers around the property, firewood runs etc.

It's a little overkill for the yard now that we're in suburbia, but it's damn fast!

I've been really happy with it's performance and reliability.

Another vote for the Toros.  We've got a 50" Toro which over halved the mow time for our place, after using an old Rover Rancher for years.

Fast, manoeuvrable & fun.

What size yard? Size of deck?
Do you want to catch the grass? Catcher, mulcher or side chute?
Hilly or flat yard? 4wd or 2wd?
Do you have lots of trees to mow around? Zero turn or standard?
Do you want to tow anything with it or use other attchments or just mow?
What type of grass and how often will it get mowed? IE foot high Cooch grass or 4 foot high Green panic. What size engine  ;D
I've owned a husky 42inch deck and now own a John Deer L111 42inch cut for mowing 4000m2 on flat ground with a few trees. Both good units. Not sure on the latest models though.
Maybe price some spares while your getting prices. Oil filter, air filter, blades...
Cheers

I have an "old skool" cox mower. 28 inch cut 12 hp engine. Simple and easy to fix. I believe the new cox mowers are just as simple ....
lets face it for the price of some of the other mowers you could pay to get someone to mow it! lol

I have a John Deere very happy with it ,I like the fact I could service it and still keep warranty as long as I have recipts for buying the service kit.

Paid about 3.5 k from memory had it for 5 years and no probs very easy to service /maintain.

My best mate has a toro and so does my next door neighbour. they are both very happy with thier machines as well. I went JD for the 42" cutter deck as toro was only 38" at the time. Might be different now.

Also towball on rear has been handy.

I am no mower expert but I like it.... for interest sake of about 10 neighbours I know there are 6 xJD's    2x toro 1x husquvarna  1x MTD.

My John Deer is really easy to service and they have great service kits. That reminds me i should go stock up on some spares myself because the price of the dollar has brought the price down a fair bit. Saved about $8 on a set of blades this week from last years prices. Might go get another set and a service kit or two  ;D

Lots of (good) questions there Geoff.

Block of land is 1 Acre which is all flat - quite a few trees to go around.  Not much lawn to speak of now as the grass and weeds have truly taken over.  We have just bought the house which has not been lived in since March hence the poor state of the lawn.

I would be happy to have a mulching kit on the mower and perhaps if possible tow a small trailer around the paddock - although not a necessity.

The JD I was looking at is pretty close in price to the Toro zero turn - around $5-6K.

Awesome, mowing is so much quicker, what i cant mow, i roundup.
You can mow right around a can on the ground.
Love it, Best value out of the zero turns.

Iseki diesel lawn tractor here...but if you're on flat land, the diesel might be over kill. It was bought to go up and down steep and wet hills...still haven't got it up over the levy bank yet.

The Huskie that the neighbours have is a great unit with a mulch deck...but the John Deere rules supreme in the country as the ride on for choice.

If you were talking racing ride on lawn mowers, I could probably tell you that the preferred one there seems to be the Cox as a modified mower, followed by the John Deere! ;D

x2 for the Husky, had it about 18 months now and love it.

One thing i noticed whilst looking, I borrowed a mates greenfield for a month or so, however being tall it was cramped and uncomfortable to drive. I think it did do a nicer cut than the husky though, but I think that all single blade jobbies do a better jo than the twin blade units.

Take all the ones you are looking at for a drive and see what "fits" best. the thing that swayed me from the JD was that there was a button on the dash that you had to press to drive in reverse with the blades running, with the husky it is a different key position so once it is set it is done.
Cheers, Craig

A Cox.
As strong as an Ox.
Have an Orion Cox, Owned it some ten years now, brought it second hand for 1500 buck. Has a 48" cutting deck. On it's third motor now, first one throw a leg out of bed, the second would drain fuel into the barrel and sump if the tap wasn't turned off, which screwed the bore, blow smoke like an old steam train.
Another Briggs in her now, 13hp brand new off eBay 900 bucks delivered.
New drive cone & axle, bearings, and chain drive sprocket, just the other day, 400 bucks worth.
Owes us about 5K, now having said that, we mow about 5 acres with it.
The three turner's can't keep the grass down at the peak of summer if we've had good rain.
Pretty happy with the old girl. Easy to fix, does a lot of work.

Seriously, what's stopping her from doing the lot?
Thats just slack I'd reckon.

See, that's where you guys are going wrong, what's wrong with having a few ales while mowing, Hey?
It takes you an hour and a half to mow just over an acre, Technically not an acre, you have a house and a shed and a big drive way on it. I can do 5 acres in just on 3 1/2 hours.
Ya gotta get a bigger cut.
