Towing specifications .. 1997 hilux 4x4 .
« on: June 26, 2022, 09:03:21 AM »
Would anyone have a link to a site that lists towing specs for vehicles QLD main roads / ..? factory RZN169 Owners manual ? 1996 > 2005
With all the RTA traffic mobbs getting antsy about people towing overweight vans and campers ...Would like to run the figures and see what we are allowed to drag around ..
Went to Toyota for information on the towing specs and got blank stares ... Trying to find the GVM  .. maximum GTM ...  GCM etc specs
Internet says 1800kg braked .. 180 kg on the ball .. and that is about all that we can find ..

Thanks in advance

Good luck with this.
A few years ago, I discovered that I had been illegally towing, among other things, my Goldstream Wing1 with my '93 'Cruiser ute. The ute has an official tow ball rating of only 112kg, even with a 350kg Hayman Reece tow bar ??? ??? ???
In '96, the same vehicle was rated at 250 kg ball weight. I contacted QLD transport, via RACQ and had a really good group discussion with some department engineers, who were openly flummoxed by the rating from Toyota.
Because it was the manufacturer's rating, there was nix the engineers could do about it, except offer sympathy. They said that Toyota could, perhaps, release a statement re-assessing the tow ball rating.
On contacting Toyota Australia, there was a decided lack of interest, on their part.

Redbook has specs for most models.

Also check the plate in your towbar as that should specify a max, which may be less than standard

Hi Edz.. If you remember, a couple of years ago I had a rebuilt '97 model.. (LN105).
The figures in the handbook and checked with Toyota Japan were as follows...
1997 LN = 1500Kg, 150Kg on the ball..
This covers all models with 2.8 diesel.
The RN = 1800Kg and 180Kg on the ball.. However this was with the stepped tow bar, not the straight bar.
This applies to models with 3.0 diesel.
Strangely enough, and I can't remember the exact numbers, but both models had a payload roughly near 1000Kg.

My 'truck' had all around HZ Land Cruiser brakes with the R131 gearbox/transfer case ect. So I fitted the RN stepped tow bar plated at 1800Kg.

I use Redbook as a source all the time for specs.  I figure if VicRoads etc use it for probationary prohibited cars, LAMS etc they must be correct

This may be of assistance to others. Just saw that my 'tilly has a 120 kg ball weight, with a max tow of 2500kg.

Have a look at your '97, Edz. There's a couple of provisos there.
