Not seeing that, but have had a couple say they don’t want to put us on a grassed site to protect the grass, went elsewhere.

Hi Mystq,

Not sure whether you have loo and shower, but I have heard a few Caravan Parks have closed the communal toilet/shower block due to Covid. Only accepting caravans that have shower/toilet facilities on board. I'm hoping it's not because of fear the grass will yellow off.

We had that a couple of times during our trip. Rather than ask if we could  contain grey and black water they just say “no campers”. They lose out, the town loses out and we find a free camp.

Over the last few months we found that a decent percentage of caravan park managers are getting a bit precious and are regarding visitors as a nuisance. No skin off our noses - we find somewhere else. Probably a free camp somewhere and spread the word.

Hi Bird,

We had friends knocked back from a place they regularly stay on the South Coast NSW late last year. They were told that it was due to Covid and the fact they had no shower or toilet on board as the Park had closed the communal shower/toilet facilities. I believe the Park has now changed it's policy.

So to those being knocked back, what did they say when you asked why?

We were told that management wouldn't allow camper trailers because they didn't have a grey water holding tank. We were told that the rule was "no camper trailers". We've been told that we needed to have a built in shower and toilet.
Our argument was that we had a portable toilet and that we could contain our grey water. When the answer was still no we just went somewhere else either paid or free and made a point of not spending any money in the town.

Most places welcomed us with open arms even though they were very busy. We spent money in those towns, of course.

A surly, precious attitude at the caravan park, often being the first point of contact in a town, is very off putting and in my mind tars the whole town with the same brush and makes me not want to have anything to do ith the place.

Was thinking that myself - do they actually inspect each and every caravan ?
Although I guess it wouldn't be hard... once they pulled up at the caravan park - within a microsecond any female in the car would need a piss and ask when the dunnys would open.

Just wondering if the hybrid caravans fall into this category ... After all the hybrid has its kitchen out side the same as camper trailers.... but hybrids mostly have shower and toilet facilities on board ......

            Thoughts ??.

Hi Tracker,

From my friends experience. They were turned away (CT no on board facilities), however they were going to meet up with family friends who have a hybrid van with onboard shower toilet. No checking of their van they just rolled in and set up. The funny thing is both used the communal shower and toilet facilities as the shower block door wasn't locked!!!!

We copped this about 4 years ago at a caravan park in Port Macquarie when we had a forward fold camper. Managed to talk them into letting us stay by arguing it wasn't a traditional (soft floor)camper trailer.

20 years ago in Cairns we rang ahead and confirmed a site but were told on arrival that they had no sites (except all the empty ones we could see).   This was well before the days of self contained grey water and portable loos.

We have a 13’3” pop-top crossover, with outside kitchen and inside shower and toilet. To use CMCA sites, we had to prove that our grey water was being caught (20ltr jerry cans for us) and install a ball valve on each of the grey water outlets.
Never had any questions asked with ‘normal’ caravan parks, even when their facilities were out of commission due to Covid. ???

What do you then do with the grey water ???

Pour it into the dump point (assuming they have one ???), take it over to the dunny & down the bowl, what ???

The one time we stayed at a CMCA it was beside the local showground, so we carried them over there and emptied them onto the gardens. As the CMCA camps are generally limited to 5-7 days this only needs to be done a couple of times.

From what I've read grey water that has been stored for more than 12-24 hours actually becomes black water and must be disposed of as such (ie, in a dump point).

Even water from a shower, which you would expect to be reasonably clean, will stink after 12-24 hours in a tank.

If that’s the case you think it may be better to use it to water trees and grass etc, like many people do with the washing machine water on backyard lawns. Let nature and sunlight take care of it.

We wipe all of our dishes and plates down with paper towel and a bit of detergent spray if they are greasy or have food residues on them. This leaves the grey water much less offensive. If we run it out onto a sunny spot on the ground as we generate it, there are never any smells or residues. I think grease in the water is the problem with most grey water from washing up.
Why some folks save their smelly grey water up in their caravan tank and then dump it at the camp site in one go I will never know.

There is a high proportion of seasoned travellers (read grey nomads) who leave their camp site, be it CP or free camp, pull up on the side of the road and open their grey water release valve. This distributes the grey water all over the road. I am in two minds about this. As a motorcyclist, coming up behind one of these people is a major pain. On the other hand, there should be less chance of the grey water causing environmental damage hitting the road and evaporating?

Hi,
That is not as unpleasant as the toilets on trains when I was a kid.
Straight flush down onto the rails, I kid you not!
There was a sign requesting that one refrain from using the toilet when stopped at a station.
Thems woz the days.
Cheers
