New Tyre purchase
« on: August 24, 2021, 12:09:55 AM »
Gday people
I’m planning on buying new tyres in the next couple of months and wondered if anyone in the SE Qld area or at least Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast is interested in using our group buying power to negotiate a better price for tyres.
The theory is that we can get a much better price for say 25 tyres than 5.
I can see a few issues, so let’s start with I have 18” rims on my Amarok and I’m flexible as to mud tyres or all terrains. I’m flexible on brand.
However I do want reasonably good quality tyres.
If we can find 3 plus people all looking to buy a set of tyres at the same time, I’m certain we can get a better price than any individual buyers can get. I feel that 2-3 months should be enough time to organise some like minded people that are prepared to get similar sized tyres.
I know that we can fit upto 25mm greater Tyre size than the largest size fitted to your model of car by the manufacturer. My car has 4 different Tyre sizes available so should allow me to fit into someone else’s Tyre size requirements. As long as we are all 18” rims
Let me know your thoughts, particularly if you are thinking of getting new tyres in the coming months.
Thanks Lloyd

Be a while before I need any, bought a heap earlier this year, both cars & the camper. Not a bad idea though.

A little more information
Vw Amarok Tyre sizing is as follows

245/70 R16 tyres. D 749mm

245/65 R17 tyres. D 749mm

255/60 R18 tyres. D 762mm

255/50 R20 tyres. D 762mm

Mine were fitted from the dealer with Pirelli scorpions
255/60 R 18 tyres. D 772mm or 30.4”

As I understand the rules I can increase my Tyre size by 25mm in either direction, so I could go to 280mm wide and a diameter of 797mm
Giving me choices of the original size 255/60 R18 D 762 $300+
Or
265/60 R18 D 775 $250+
275/60 R18 D 787 $350+ low available
285/60 R18 D 800 $290+
255/65 R18 D 790 not available in good brand
265/65 R18 D 803 $300+

All of those tyre sizes should make a few vehicles and models needs
Of course these are ball park prices with out any bulk leverage or brand choices.

Just a follow up, as I have not had any interest in sharing bulk discount prices, I decided to just get the best price on the tyres I wanted.
I ended up getting max is Razr AT-811
Quite an aggressive looking all terrain Tyre in 265 60 R18

You will be happy. Done almost 13,000km on mine, so far wearing evenly and quiet (for the tread pattern). Great on wet roads, seem to pick up less stones than my old Toyo AT2.

My experiences back that up as well. Got 15,000km on a set of these (265/70/17) on my Ranger Wildtrak and loving them. Great tyre on road and off.

Another happy customer also. Have only done about 10000klm, mainly on bitumen (wet and dry) and have the same observations as others in that they are pretty quiet

5 new 265/70/17s on Disco last Friday. Noticeably quiet on the half hour drive home. New tyres can be like that!

How did you go with the Tyre Pressure Monitoring system?
Did they need recalibrating?

That's pretty good. I thought I was doing well with $339 ea. for 5 fitted, including an alignment.
