Carnarvon Gorge - Sandstone or Takarakka??
« on: June 04, 2020, 09:06:00 PM »
Have the week off after the June/July school holiday.

Planning five nights.

Assumed I could book online, apparently not. Have sent email to both asking if they are going to be open the week following school holiday.

Soooo given I could book either it’s given me a chance to ask the question.

Which and why....

Figured Sandstone suit our style....

- I see there is only 2$ difference per night between the two
- Sandstone doesn’t have showers

Takka is nice, has a creek running past it, amenities , camp kitchen and fire pits , shops plus happy hour each night that is catered for kids and adults. The one up top has a nice view but that’s all. I think they have porta loo’s up there now.
Really depends on what you want I guess.

OK Sandstone isn’t an option for us as they are fully booked til the end of July.

Here I was thinking we’d be alright out of school holidays.

Hmm, I reckon Takarakka will he fully booked as well.

I did receive this info which might be helpful

Thank you for contacting Sandstone Park Carnarvon Gorge!

! We Are Back !

Sandstone Park is now open, but we are only having 8 sites available,
and our closing date for this year is 6th October, 2020.

This means we are limited on the availability of sites.  We ask that
you please book ahead before your stay, as walk-ins will unfortunately
be turned away and the next nearest accommodation is 100kms away at
Rolleston.

Our staff will also still be working from home, so please give them a
call on 0749844679, if anything is needed.  We also ask that you
patiently work with us, while our staff are working very hard to keep
up with all inquiries and to do our best to find a vacant spot for all
of our campers.

If you are booking online and your dates "can't be processed at this
time", this is because the dates you have chosen are already booked
out.  Either try changing your dates or contact us to see what we can
do for you.

We look forward to seeing some campers on our road again and visiting
the one and only Sandstone Park, Carnarvon Gorge.

I’m sure there was a third park that was on the road into the gorge past Takka. It was closer to the Gorge and on the left of the road

Hi Weeds, we are thinking of calling in for a look but we will just free camp back away from the NP, then drive to it next day and do a couple of walks, the longest walk is 24ks one way takes all day we will not do that one, been told helps of pigs and dingoes on the way in and out early morning or late arvos and very lovely spot, could not see my mob staying more than two days if that, Craig

Npws opens the old campground as overflow camping during the school hols. Arguably the best place to camp too, down in the gorge area. It would be worth seeing if you can book online or ring.

That's where we stayed a few years ago. Nice campground and don't have to drive to the walks.
Cheers, John.

Our plan was to avoid school holidays...based on the two caravan parks being booked out for the whole of July I suspect it’ll be busy outside school holidays.

We were planning four/five nights. Plan also was to do an overnight hike on one of the nights walking all the way to the end (big bend), pitching a tent than come back the next day.

You should be able to do a return walk to big bend if you start about 7. We've done it with kids
vs as young as 6 and that inclined all the side canyons.

Yep we could do on one day but we have through hiking gear, makes sense to do an overnighter.

Have you considered going around the back and looking across the top of the gorge?

The landscape is totally different then down in the valley, apparently still some good lookouts up the top and you can still do a section of the great walk if you want to have a hiking night.

The main focus of this week off was a shake down run on living in the new fit out of the Poptop.

We were at the Gorge, this time 2020. We stayed at Sandstone and were more than happy.
I got the impression that Takaraka was more family biased (read "kiddies") and Sandstone more for we gentlemen of the world.
Taka now being a Big4, I would think that this may be more the case. Just my opinion, mind.
