I've got very weak wifi at 1 end of our house which I'd like to remedy.

I have a netcomm modem at 1 end of the house connected to 2 pc's via ethernet, at the problem end there is a "Fetch" box connected via ethernet cable.

Is there some sort of router/switch/box that I can connect to the ethernet cable, that has wifi built in and has spare ethernet ports so I can connect the Fetch box with ethernet cable ?

The budget is limited, so mesh is out of the question.

might be a good option to get a cheap router with four inbuilt LAN ports and set it up as a wireless access point...

Get a cable run from one end of house to the other ... more reliable than wifi to start with.

Then you could run a 5 port switch and run 5 devices happily at the end of the house..

the N spec is an older spec of wifi...

the key is the letter at the end of the spec.

an N-spec router has a maximum (theoretical) speed that is less than a current AC-spec router

that's a big reason why the previously linked N-spec router is cheaper than the AC-spec router i linked to...

Wireless N is 300Mbps. Wireless AC can be 2900Mbps. Whatever these flash new AX routers are they say they can do 11000Mbps. That is all bits though. Divide by 8 to get Bytes (which is what nearly everything non network related uses) and by 10 to get an approximate actual transfer rate in megabytes per second as reported by your computer.

That is all in a laboratory under ideal conditions blah blah blah. Practically, the difference is I used to copy from my laptop to the server at 13MBps until I changed ISP and got a new AC modem / router and now I can copy at 50MBps which is basically as fast as the drives in the server can write. Getting a solid state drive will get that faster and I have heard it can be up at nearly 100MBps.

Won't make any difference to your actual internet speed unless you are in the middle of a housing estate with a Shitload of other people using the same band. If you have devices that can use it, switch to 5g wireless instead of 2.4g. Less interference, better throughput. The range is worse, but if you are putting in a new access point it won't matter.

If you are tech savvy, the best option is something open source like DD-WRT or Tomato firmware on the new access point. You get semi-corporate features for a home router price, but you have to buy the correct router and flash the firmware yourself.

Thanks PM, probably not a problem, the wifi access point ( hope that's right ) will only be about 2 or 3 meters from users, no gaming, just general web surfing and occasional you tube

that's fair enough... depending on your budget, i would strongly suggest getting an AC-spec router, though, if you decide to go with that option...

Have a look on EBay if your budget is tight. We have a couple of secondhand AC routers set up as Wi-fi access points (and ethernet switches) feeding off the main fibre router back at home and they've worked well for the last three or four years.

Wires are run in wall cavity/roof or under the house, NOT laying on the floor.

You still have to get from the access point to the device, so TV, media player, pc means ethernet cable, mobile devices don't have hard wire connections. Interesting how the world has moved on in such a short time. You can thank Australian (CSIRO) ingenuity for that.

Well I got my Tenda Nova AC1200 mesh wifi system from Amazon (au) today, delivered for $99-00

Packaging is/was excellent.

Setup and control is by an app, and is very simple,( like me    )

Connected to modem with ethernet cable, plugged in the power, opened the app, entered the default password, entered the ssid and password that I wanted and that was it, done.

Positioned the other 2 repeaters and plugged them in, looked for the green light on the front, all done up and running .

The time taken to download and install the app was the longest  bit
