Should I turn my Gas off at meter before going away for a month??

Hi all,

We have Natural Gas to our house for our Stove/Hot water and we are about to  go away for a month. Since we have been on this house and having Natural gas for the first time we have never been away this long and wondering is it advisable to turn the Gas off at the meter before we leave??

If you have a storage hot water that runs a pilot flame than this would use fade.....just remember you have to re-light it.

For one month i wouldn’t bother....I never turn the power off.

I turn off gas and water when away for extended periods.

After the damage it did while the wife was at home and didnt know where / how to turn the water off last time.
 My Murphy instinct tells me a full weeks worth of flooding through out a closed up house in extra humid conditions, Would be near enough a full strip out  rebuild job ..
That sort of hassle / cost /  disruption we dont need .

For a weekend/long weekend we'll knock the HWS down to 1, and then it avoids the hassle of relighting, but make sure that there is enough gas in there...

For a month? We'd tend to turn it off all together, depending on time of year (Armidale does get a bit cool in the winter...)

Get a house sitter  , at least they can call the CFA  for fire of  a plumber  & mow the lawns

Having a shower last Monday, turned off the water , heard a slight noise like water hammer then there was the sound of water  spraying still going in bathroom.

The speedy hose for the hot water tap in vanity had just burst.
In the time it took me to jump out of shower, Grab a towel and run out to turn off the mains the bathroom was 10mm deep in water and it was making tracks  for the carpet in hallway.

Job next week is to replace all quick connect hoses with soft drawn copper.  Only replaced them 2 years ago. So much for their 10 year guarantee.

When we've had both bathroom & ensuite updated over the last few years, the bloke doing both jobs has fitted stop cocks between the wall & the braided pipes going to the taps.

We are off for a month today and, if it was the summer here, I might have considered it. However, temperatures have been barely creeping over zero for the last week so the heating is definitely staying on standby. It will come on automatically while we are away if the inside temp drops to 7. It also means that I can turn on the heating two or three days before we get back so that we return to a warm(ish) house. One of the benefits of internet control.

Good luck with the copper change over, it is fairly limited on where you can use copper tails these days as most sink top taps are mixer type taps that utilise Flexi tails. This leave for the the good old skill plumbers only the toilet to hook up with a nice bit of chrome tube . You don’t use Flexi hoses to hook up water heaters unless you are from the bro school of plumbing.

As for preferred easy hookers it is my suggestion to insist on the new Abey polyamide hoses  with a 10 year warranty. Might be a good thing if my place blew up.  As long as I wasn't in it.

Its  1980s  house, pretty much block value now. They are knocking 'em down around the neighbourhood.

I could get the insurance, sell the block and go live somewhere nicer.

Would save decluttering too. After 33 years in one place there is a lot of crap that could easily be junked if I could get motivated.
