And the trip in that article took 4 days, and the last 200k of the journey was done with the car mandating a 80kph top speed on a single lane national highway?  I wish they'd quantify their claimed carbon emissions savings? How do they think the electricity was generated? If they were paying the recharge costs, they would have only saved $100 odd? Personally, for the extra $100 in fuel I'd be happier to halve the trip time

I'm not really for or against electric, I can see there is a space for them in our modern world. An electric car with a 400km range would mean about fought-nightly recharges for my around town driving. But for a big trip, or a trip anywhere away from suburbia, I think it will be a fair while before I'd consider electric.

For city driving electric cars WILL have a place... and soon (though I'd debate the technology is not "average joe" ready just yet). For remote touring... well it'll be a while before they solve the questions I have. But that'll probably take less time than I'd like.

For someone who isn't afraid of tech, I'm actually pretty anti-tech in vehicles. But I'll be a dying breed soon enough... and I know that.

i'm afraid it does not make much sense to me. If you are in not in any great hurry it might be ok but to take 4 days (the last part of the trip without air and travelling at 80k) plus 3 nights accommodation (Approx $300-$400) to save $240?. The trip also highlighted the fact that the recharging stations could fail (Tully) leaving you stranded. I think I will stick to fossil fuels for a bit longer. I wonder how the economy of the EV would go towing a camper etc?.

Exactly my perfect in the shed vehicles would be the 200 series for outback touring and a Tesla 3 for my 14km commute to work and around town

One question i do have about electric vehicles in general. Since range is all the rage none of the manufacturers have turned the roof, bonnet or boot into a collection point by making it out of solar panels

Is there a reason behind this like the panels will produce bugger all recharge in the overall scheme of things or some other reason???

I remember reading somewhere a while ago that a full days sun charging might get you an extra 2 km range....

Spotted this in back street at Miriam Vale the other day.....add these to the big car park and RV dump point and huge kids playground area there, and the town has changed abit since our last stop in a few years ago.

As I suspected, but had never seen the actual carbon accounting, electric vehicles in the only conclusively win in the emission stakes when the power generation is from renewable sources.

If it was a hundred years ago, this forum would be called "MyCart". Everyone would be telling stories about their 2 horsepower buggy and km per bale of hay.  Complaining about those new fangled automobile things.  They would never take off as you have to find somewhere who has petroleum distillate or whatever that stuff is called.  If my horse won't go a quick stop to eat some grass and we're off!

What people also dont realise is that in 20 or so years, the service station business model will be dead.  Any business will be able to provide a re-charge service (probably via credit card), and parking meter/recharge stations will be a common sight in many streets.  Re-charging will be a normal part of driving and parking your car.  You wont need to go to a specialist business to fill up.

I think you’re right Bird, but I think it will take more than a couple of years, might actually take a couple of decades.

In terms of motive power alone nothing beats electric power for simplicity and efficiency. Just need energy storage technology to catch up be it batteries, hydrogen fuel cells or some currently unknown/unworkable solution such as fusion reactors.

One of the benefits will be that people won't have to rely on dodgy GPS's anymore whilst remote touring in such places as the Simmo, Canning, Flinders and the like. All they'll have to do is follow the power lines.
I can't wait to see these power lines strung across The Sandy Straits so as to service the squillion vehicles on Fraser at Easter. The Manta Ray could be turned into a "Trolley Barge", just like the old trolley buses.
 I hope Puma get on board so I get my 4 cents a Kw discount with my RACQ membership.

1277 doubling every year means 1.3M sales a year in 10 years - about 200k more than get sold each year now in Australia. That said the rate of increase will likely drop as time goes by - still a crap load of new cars though
