What sort of house do you take camping?
« on: February 11, 2019, 12:12:57 PM »
So there seems to have been a lot of people lately (myself included) that have changed their camping abode. Nothing wrong with that, it's just a part of the evolutionary process. But it got me thinking, what style of house is most common now days, and what does "camping" mean now?

For myself, It used to be a hoochie over the bike with a sleeping bag on the ground, then it was a tent, then a rear fold hard floor, then a hybrid/crossover, and now something that verges on a caravan?

I did a quick search for any previous polls about what people camp in and I found a poll for "who made your camper" and another one for "what is your dream camper", but I could'nt find anything for what style of camping you did?

So I thought I'd start a new poll. I've put up the following categories, but let me know if you think it needs to be refined. I don't want to start a whole war over what the difference is between a hybrid and a caravan so for the purpose of this poll, can we say a hybrid/crossover is a compact camper purpose built for off-road use and primarily around sleeping inside and living outside, and a Caravan is basically designed for living inside? For example, lets say something like a T-van is a hybrid, A track Topaz is an off-road caravan, a Jayco Swan is soft wall caravan, and a Jayco Expanda is a caravan?

Tent/Swag - Tick this one if you sleep on the ground under some canvas or nylon, or a car awning.
Soft floor trailer - Tick this if it is a tent on wheels that has a soft floor.
Hard floor trailer - If it's a tent of wheels that has a solid floor that folds out (forwards or rear), this is the one for you.
Hybrid/Crossover - This would be for the T-Vans, UEV's, Ultimates, and the like. Hard walls, hard floor, but still a fair bit of canvas, purpose built for compact off-road use.
Soft wall caravan - Think Jayco Swan and the like, anything with a wind up roof section and mostly canvas walls.
Normal caravan - Use this one for your standard run of the mill caravan, that is not purpose built for going off the beaten track.
Off-road Caravan - This is for the caravans that are purpose built for exploring the back roads. Along the lines of Exodus, AOR, Trackmaster, etc.
Other - This is for anything obscure or exotic.
Roof top tent - obviously one of those tent things on the roof with a ladder to fall off when your drunk.
Semi off-road caravan - that would be a standard caravan, but with better suspension and high clearance, like a Jayco with the outback suspension upgrade?

As per the early voting, I think campers will still be the majority, those who are into getting away more are more likely to fork out for the upgrade as well as be more active on the forum. I think the bulk, however, will still be in campers

We use our Tvan without deploying the canvas as often as is practical - we call it our swag on wheels. :)

we sold our CT some years ago and have gone back to  an Oztent and/or swags. So many more camping locations opened up.
Next year will jump into a Tvan and leave Vic for the winters.

Nice work.

Guessing Roof Top Tents would fall into the 'Tent' category, regardless if they're mounted on a car or a trailer?

Fair call, I probably should have set the poll so you could select more than one option, but cant do that now (unless someone can tell me how). I don't even have a glass eye, let alone a crystal ball, so if your asking for a change to the poll, may need to be more specific ;D

We have a tent, and we have two swags, and we have an off-road caravan..............................but I ticked off-road caravan as that is the one we use the most.

We went from tent camping when it was just the 2 of us to a camper trailer when our daughter was born. The better half still considered the camper trailer a bit too much setting up/packing up so we now have full size caravan. I do still love getting away in it, and I enjoy towing it as well for some strange reason, but if I'm honest either of the tent or camper trailer suit me better. Have been contemplating digging out the old tent again recently. Maybe look at taking my daughter camping for the odd weekend away and leave the better half at home so she can have some peace and quiet. Sounds like a win win to me.
