My mum has a 17 diesel AWD one and I quite enjoy driving it. But it has a proper auto not a cvt. My SIL just got a 19 model petrol, Cvt and she loves hers as well. We had a very serious look at one as a runaround for Wifey. I liked the car as a whole but I didn't like the petrol manual as I thought it could do with some more poke. And as for the CVT, I'm just not a fan. Would it have been alright for a round town car for Wifey? Yes it would have. Being a typical male, more power is better. In the end we got a new Mazda 3 Sp25 manual. Wifey loves it and I really enjoy taking it for spirited drives, if you know what I mean. Back to the ASX. I don't think you can go wrong with them. Biggest seller in their class so they must be alright.

thats for it.. I havent driven one as I'd be like you LOL.. but she has a mazda 3 currently, been great car for 140,000klms but has a rooted back, so needs something higher to make gettin in and out easier... thus that or a CX3 size/style.... Price is also a huge challenge for her. :(

We looked at the CX3 as well but it really wasn't a nice car.  They are actually built on the Mazda 2 platform, not the 3 platform.  Sometimes I wish we purchased the ASX, but everytime I think of the CVT I think I'll stick with the Mazda.

yea have no experience with CVT, but she actually would like it in a manual, so maybe ok there.

I hired an ASX recently for 2 weeks and I enjoyed driving it, easy to park and quite zippy. Good on petrol etc but I hated the CVT at first till I got used to it. Was a little sad to see it go in the end

CVT takes a bit of getting used too, doesn't take long and you forget all about it. I had it in the Nissan Xtrail and drove it for 12 months both country and city driving and it was quite good.

so everyone talks about CVT, whats the story with them? Whats to 'get used to' etc??

She probably wouldnt know the difference, but again would be fixed with a manual

CVT hold one rev while it changes road speed. No real gears to speak of.
So they seem to rev quite high before they get up to cruising speed. Sounds similar to a slipping clutch.

You don't get the thump or kick of a standard auto, very smooth as it transitions thru the power band.
With the soundproofing of modern cars you won't even hear any difference.

Depends on the CVT, newer CVTs are hard to pick from autos as the manufacturers have programmed simulated gear changes into them.

The one I was referring to was a 2017 ASX petrol with a CVT

CVT is great.

You could hire an ASX from Thrifty I think it is  and see if your wife like it.
We thought about it but decided on a Honda Insight instead.

I’ve had shed loads of them as hire cars over the years.
I pick the ASX over the Outlander everyday.

The CVT in the ASX is better then some.
But when you peg it on a short highway merge you notice it. Probably not an issue for most wifeys though.

I rate the ASX almost on par with the Corolla in that size range, as far as just jump in and start driving, knowing pretty much exactly what you’re going to get every time.
Can’t say the same for a few others in that category.

I have an Outlander...manual.....hate the CVT.....I drive around at approx 2000rpm because I like the nice relaxed noise. With a CVT, it is always revving and around town is annoying....less so on the highways.
The diesel with the "proper" auto is the pick, but was out of my price range.

Daughter has just bought an ASX...manual.....only because her last car was manual.

As above just took one for a week long drive as i had it for a hire car and hated the CVT it felt like it had no go at all till you rang the guts out of it. Mine was a hire car so it could have been a bit tired
Apart from that it was nice to drive a bit plastic y on the inside but they all are these days.
Only other complaint was that i kept dislodging the kick panel surround down where the bonnet release was as i would kick it with my foot as i swung around to get in.

Ours is red with black interior.
The aircon is very good and the rear glass is factory privacy dark, so I've never really found the heat to be a problem in it, even on the hottest days.

Mine and my daughters cars are white....more to do with easy to keep clean and less fading compared to most colours after a few years.

A previous car was black and really, the colour makes bugger all diff to heat inside.
