Snowpeak Tent Pegs

Used our Snowpeak forged steel tent pegs for the first time on the weekend and well worth the price. (available from Drifta)
Easy to get into hard rocky ground (friends camping next to us bent their standard pegs putting them in) and even easier to remove. A couple of twists with the snowpeak hammer to loosen them and they came straight out. So easy in fact that the good lady did it and now has added this as her job.
No affiliation with this, just happy with the product. I'm getting too old and stiff in the joints to be wrestling with stubborn tent pegs so anything to make it easier must be good.

Pricey yes, but they work a treat!

I have managed to  bend one, surprisingly it was pulling it out not hammering it in that I bent it, was in hard packed road base at a caravan park.

My beef with the standard style peg like that is that the force isn't straight down the shaft, which is why so many of the standard ones bend. Those rock breaker ones may be stronger than normal, but I really like the design of the snow peak is better.

I recently ordered some of these rock breaker ones.....they charged me 1.50 each and threw a few extra each..have used them on this trip..no bending of these....really good value

Personally i love my rebar pegs.  30 cm of rebar with a tang welded at the top and the bottom ground into a point.  Bloody  industructable seriously cheap to make and because of the ribs on the rebar also grip brilliantly.

Now you mention it i think ill head down and knock up a few spares for the flinders dirt at easter :-)

I did some research a while ago and discovered some alternatives that are very similar (cast iron vs Forged) to the snowpeak pegs:

I haven't tried them, so cant vouch one way or the other.  Also not trying to take anything away from Snowpeak, as they sell some great Kit.
Ended up going the way of Coach Bolts instead.
In our recent escape at Easter to Flinders Ranges, the Coach Bolts worked an absolute treat, holding down the flaps of our annex in some really bad howling wind, when our mid size pegs kept pulling straight out.

I have been using the Hillbilly Hi-Tensile pegs for years and have yet to bend them. I have really given them grief driving them through some terrible soil/rocks with a mash hammer and all that happens is that I very slightly flatten the top of the peg. They are now $3 each.

I bought a set of these in 300mm length - forged steel. Works out $35 cheaper than 6 of the equivalent drifta ones (with freight included) - near $6 a peg saving.

They are bloody good, so good, I bought another set.

I have compared them side by side to the drifta ones. On the whole, they are pretty identical, the head on the drifter is about 2mm greater and the tang is a little more substantial - not that you would ever break the head or tang on the clones.

All in all, better value for money IMO than the snow peak.

Still not cheap, but no cordless drill required.

Cheers, I have seen the vid prior. The supapeg one sure looks interesting, especially for the price. I almost thought about buying one to side by side test it against the ebay forged one. I may still do that - especially if I ever see one of the supapeg in the flesh. Having used the forged peg, I'm having a hard time accepting the supapeg would be as good, but without testing one, that opinion is subjective.

I reckon I could drive that forged one into concrete - almost.


EDIT: clicked on and noticed this is a different vid, I saw the original. Looks like I don't have to perform that test now.
That said, it may have just been luck - the drifta is punching through far more ground due to its extra length and one badly placed rock could have taken either out.

Still pretty impressive of the supapeg. As stated, that ground is hard. The parting shots were filmed at Wooramel River retreat, been there twice in my last couple of trips. I recognise the backdrop.

Not those ones specifically but ones from Aldi that look the same. I have used them a couple of times now and seem pretty good. Going to Lightning Ridge in a few weeks time so will give them a go in some pretty hard ground then and see how they perform.

As a general comment in regards to bang in pegs (I have the supapeg ones) I never found too many issues getting them in the ground but getting the buggers out again gave the guts a bit of a strain. Screw in and out for me :cup: + get to buy a new impact driver. Winning

I would agree that it was probably (bad) luck involved for the Snowpeak peg based on the following,

A quick google tells me that forging steel increases it's strength by about 30% (not 100% sure of this number though),
The Snowpeak #20 pegs have a 6mm diameter so a 28mm cross-sectional area whilst the Supapeg (225mm & 300mm) has an 8mm diameter so a 50mm cross-sectional area, based on this I think although the Supapeg #20 is made from a process that produces stronger steel, the thicker diameter of the Supapeg ones more than compensates for it in this comparison. Cost comparison here is that the Snowpeak costs 7 times the amount.

The #30 Snowpeak though (used in the review) has an 8mm diameter peg, so should be about 30% stronger than the Supapeg 300mm, but costs about 7 times the amount, The ones from eBay are 5 times the amount.

Everyone's situation is different so value is a bit subjective, but this might help people make a more informed decision.
