« on: May 17, 2018, 07:18:31 PM »
No laughing from the banana benders thank you
Each year I'm feeling the cold more and more and this year is no exception, so I'm posing this question. Which thermal underwear have you found to be the most effective ?

And, yes I do know what the best way is to get warm and that's not happening anymore  :'( :'(

Merino thermals on special at Aldi this week. Probably can't go wrong for the price.

Icebreaker from NZ is the best. Forget the Anaconda crap.
It is pure merino NZ wool and very good quality. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. There are outlets in AUS or buy online.

Damart is good bang for your buck. Many years of motorcycling in all seasons, and I've tried a few different types, but for me the Damart stuff doesn't feel as bulky as most others in the mid price bracket........., if you want to go "top shelf" Paddy Pallin icebreaker range is 100% Merino.

Our 50% off Anaconda Marino thermals have been perfect on many many sub zero camping trips over many years. https://www.anacondastores.com/winter-clothing-collections/cederberg-merino/c/cederberg-merino (just wait for the sales).
One trip was a few nights around -6 and they did the job perfectly.

Now we’re back in QLD they’re pushed to the very back of the underwear drawer, but still there if we ever venture south again.

I haven't bought any since becoming a banana bender but back in the day I got them from Kathmandu a few times when they went on a big sale (ie well over 50%) and they were good quality, still got a set somewhere I think, they are not worth their RRP but are generally good quality.

If you go through eBay you can get an additional 20% off at the moment (use POCKET as the promo code) for these ones on clearance, bringing them to $40ea (70% off) free shipping if you buy more than one http://stores.ebay.com.au/kathmandu-official-store/Thermals-Underwear-/_i.html?_nkw=kathmandu+xt&submit=Search&_fsub=58086276013&_sid=1154012103

Merino if you are planning on staying dry. Polyprop if you are planning on getting wet.

Sorry Keith, but what is thermal underwear? Is it woollen jocks or leggings or what?
Not trying to be smart, I’ve just never seen it & am thankful I’ve never needed them by the sounds

Listo, they are sort of leggings and tee shirts that are designed to keep your body heat in but allow perspiration out. You wear them under your other clothing, they come in different weights ( thickness) depending on how cold it gets where you need them.
Have a look at the link I put in.
cheers Keith

I have some....dunno what brand, but rarely use them. Apart from the long legin things, because it's hard to wear two layers of anything else, for general camping ( ie; sitting around a campfire etc ) what's the advantage of a top thermal instead of just wearing a tee shirt, flanno, jumper and a jacket. And of course a beanie !!

Are you talking about day time, or sleeping?
What do you currently have/wear to feel the cold?

We camped at Gaffneys 2-3weeks ago and it was 0 and I just had trakky's and normal reggies on but a long sleeve 't-shirt' Tucked in well, and a good jacket and pure wool beanie which I also sleep with

or get a mail order bride so it does happen anymore :P

Another vote for the Aldi stuff! I have poly thermals from Aldi and they're amazing too. I feel the cold and wear them under pyjamas. During the day I just wear multiple layers!

I have the Merino (top and bottom) thermals from Anaconda. They are good quality and do the trick. I've used them on some sub-zero nights in the Vic high country, and they have been terrific.

Don't underestimate the value of a warm beanie, during the day and when sleeping too if it's very cold. I find it's hard to feel warm, regardless of how many clothes you have on, if your scone is cold.

Thermals are thermals.
If you only want to have the best ever perfect material touching your skin, that’s nice, I’m glad you can afford it.
But if you don’t want to feel the cold, these work just fine.....

The blurb at the bottom of that link you put up actually explains the differences between natural and synthetic thermals pretty well.

They missed a strong point - wool thermals can be worn for a whole trip and not stink - synthetics start to smell after a single wear.

I also disagree with them on wool being better when wet. We wear polyprop when white water rafting/kayaking because it works better in water, holds its shape and doesn't get heavy - wool does pretty badly. For hiking/skiing/camping etc it is merino for me because it tends to regulate temp better, doesn't stink, is thinner etc etc.
There is a difference, however small.
