Prado 150 series GX vs GXL
« on: March 29, 2018, 06:12:21 PM »
To the 150 owners- what is the difference between the GX and GXL models.  I know the GXL has a sat Nav screen but I have also seen later model GX's with the sat Nav as standard.  Is the price difference worth picking one over the other.

On mine  a 2009 model
Dual zone ac
Side steps
Steering wheel controls for audio unit
Cruise control  ( I think)
Color coded side mirrors
Maybe reduced seating?
Thats all I can think of atm

I think the GXL has a wider rim than the GX.....whether that has changed on the later models I could not say.

Differences depends on the year model (early, facelift, and now the 2018 version).
Most differences are listed above by JWB, other differences are
Fuel tank size (83l versus the dual 83+67l)
Reverse camera
5 seats versus 7 seats.
Rear aircon.
roof rails.

Some of these is optional extra (ie a GX with 7 seats)
Not sure about if you can get the GX with dual tanks optioned? otherwise you could always get aftermarket tank anyway if you need.
Satnav may only be standard on GXLs after 2014, as the early models only have a multifunction display (ie reverse camera/trip computer).
Toyota factory satnav are known for being very slow to update the maps, and you have to pay to update them. The current (newest available) maps are dated 2016.

I bought a GXL because I wanted all the factory features over the GX, but if I had my time again I would buy a GX (or even a late model 120) for the following reasons.
dual zone AC, never used
Rear aircon, takes up valuable space in the cargo area.
side steps, people give these away if you want to retrofit factory ones, or put some aftermarket brush bars/rock sliders.
steering wheel controls, these are useful, but again something you could retrofit, or not worry about.
Cruise control would be a big one for me, again, aftermarket if needed
colour coded side mirrors, the plastic trim is removable and easily painted
7 seats, never used, removed the seats, sat in garage for a couple years, had to sell them when garage space became issue.
wheels, you can get GXL wheels or FJ cruiser, or aftermarket if you want wider.
Reverse cam, easy to upgrade the headunit to one that is capable of displaying camera and satnav. Early GXLs require expensive additional parts for headunit upgrade.
Roof rails, another giveaway item if you want to retrofit, otherwise almost every roof platform is going to be installed direct to roof mounts.

Other models to consider, if you are towing, the SWB 3 door versions have higher tow capacity.
then the altitude models with the euro spec liftgate (tyre underneath, 83l fuel tank only).

Have a good think about what features you require, as a lot of them can be added aftermarket.
Ask/read on the pradopoint forums for more info, also facebook group aussie 4wd prado 150.

Cool, that clears a few things up. I am not buying until 2020 but the larger dual fuel tanks and cruise control will be important.  I didn't know about the fuel tanks until today. Good info thanks.

Could be but its down to Prado as most likely choice.  We were going to buy end of this year but have pushed it out to another two years. I know I overthink things like vehicle purchases but usually I spend a year on research so I know everything about them then I know when I find a bargain.

Last Cruza was 3 months looking previous Cruza was nearly 5 months looking.

Since the face lift in 2014 a GX has been fundamentally similar except for 5seats v 7 seats, black mirrors and door handles  v Chrome, climate air v normal simple air con, rear over head air v no rear air ( except for air vent in rear of console), no side steps ( allows easy fit of stronger after market),
2018 continues the trend and both include similar safety features ( like 2014)

If you don't need 7 seats then save the dollars and get a GX, larger pay load, more space in wagon section.
I am on my 3rd GX and happy with the package, provides a great unit to set up as you want it with accessories. I have just returned from a quick 3000km trip into regional NSW and loved the comfort, performance and economy achieved(9.0lt 100km) no towing sitting between 100km and 115km (on Newell Hwy),
