Just gouging more money from the Oz public.  There would be absolutely no need for this and indeed a huge reduction in taxes if our mealy mouthed, weak as piss pollies could grow a backbone and commit to eliminating corruption in all levels of govt!  Federal, state and local corruption is costing us billions and is a huge factor that is seeing us lose our way forward as a nation. We are one of the most over taxed and over governed countries on the planet.  Every day we read in the papers about more crap that goes against what being an Aussie should be.

On another note.
I always find it amusing we all bag import companies especially camper manufacturers and say buy Australain, yet we all will buy from overseas because it's cheaper. Not having ago but always find it funny.

For me, it depends on the product and purpose. A screen protector for $1 (that is identical to a product I can buy in Australia) is fit for purpose and would be made off-shore regardless of if I bought it here or not. So I'll buy the cheap Chinese product.

However, a camper trailer that is Australian made may be considered more fit for purpose by some than the Chinese alternatives, for example.

And when it comes to something that I rely on for safety, I'll buy from a company I know does adequate R&D so that I feel comfortable trusting that product, not an overseas copycat/knock-off which might not perform as you are lead to believe it will when it really counts.

At the end of the day, this may not raise any extra $ which simply means the govt will need to get its $ from somewhere else. Once Bill gets in, all sorts of taxes will go up and I reckon we will push through  an increase in the GST rate in his second term.

I know there is probably little chance of it happening - due to the current gerrymandering system and safe seats etc..
But I'd like to see all these high flying self important politicians out of parliament and on the DOLE.
It's just a pipe dream, but if it came true, woweee.  Maybe we'd see some genuine changes for the better.

Just on the corruption level. You hear a lot of comments on how corrupt the union movements are by politicians and whether or not you like them or not, I cannot see that the problem is as bad they make it out. Sure there will be some corruption, as there will be in any organisation, but it's not like it was 35 years ago. The bigger problem is the corruption within BIG businesses and with the politicians, who are themselves the biggest corrupt ones around.

Normally the package is held, you are sent a notice from freight comthat you need to pay $xx duty and GSt, you pay and it is released

Think they can both be bad, I know management who have taken on new roles in gov and straight away identified some dead wood that should go, only to be informed that the reason the union approved the last agreement was on the basis that that people were given a job. It's bad on both parts but one them is supposed to be representing others interests, not their own .
