Jerry cans on roof rack

I have just put roof racks with a basket on my ute and would like to carry two plastic jerry cans but in the laying down position. Has anyone done this and would I have issues with leaks. Looking for feedback in case it is not a very good idea.

Done 20 thousand kms on all sorts of roads including rough corrugations with a plastic gerry of diesel laying flat in a roof basket.  No leaks, no issues.  Piece of outdoor carpet underneath and tied down securely with two ratchet straps.

Same here.
2 sometimes 3 plastic jerrys with diesel laying flat on the racks.
Rubber backed marine carpet for protection, wide webbing ratchet straps to secure.
They were the black Rheem jerrys.

I’ve also done similar but with water and ULP (Willow brand - which is also Australian made). They will swell up a bit if it’s hot

I will be carrying diesel.

Sounds like with a bit of protection and secured properly I should have no problems. Thanks for the replies its good to know that others have done it and it worked out OK. I normally carry them in the well body of my ute but now I have a canopy and I dont want the smell of diesel in there.

I'm a massive fan of rotopax style fuel containers, a lot of the guys in our 4wd club use them for extended touring, as they sit a lot lower to the roof rack/platform than J cans...

They come in a lot of different volumes as well, so you can have say 2x 30l diesel containers and a 5l 2- stroke one for the chainsaw

I used 10 L plastic cans as they are easier to lift onto the roof rack. Mine are Pro Quip brand and have a pop out vent in the breather, a potential leak if not stored vertical, but less likely with diesel. Also used a couple of carpet squares under. A mate destroyed a spare doing a 19K half lap due to the side walls rubbing on the roof rack so it's something to guard against.

The Chinese copies aren't as bad on the wallet, and are quick delivery too - about 4-5 days
