Consumer Goods (Motor Vehicle Recoveery Straps) Safety Standards 2017

New Australian Safety Standards have been released for Motor Vehicle Recovery Straps (Snatch Straps). These became effective 30 Nov 17 and add a requirement for labeling both manufacturers details and ratings etc., but also usage instructions. They also include wording in relation to "should" have training before use.

Existing straps have a 2 year sunset clause (that is not to be used after 30 Nov 19).

Unfortunately the standard is to large a file to post, however see the attached Explanatory Notes which gives an overview.

Soooooo ns the old stuff over 2 or so years old cant be used  . l do love some pencil jockey that writes standards that keep him I'm in a gig . lf that's all you got & your stuck out there  " Hard Cheese Old Man  " Though you shouldn't tamper with the  " Nanny state  " or you might get in to trouble , only to stand in the naughty corner for a time .
Or you could stay bogged  .

This only covers the retailers of straps. There is nothing stopping anyone from using a strap well past the use by date. I have seen straps used that should have been thrown out years ago and they failed. Choice of how the recovery should be done also has to be considered. Is it better to winch, use a winch extension strap and a tow vehicle or snatch strap. I cannot see most people throwing out a strap after 2 years and buying a new one. You could have the same thing happen with a winch extension yet they have not been included. I don't think it will change much.
