Get them to pay up now if they don't want to go through insurance, get a quote for supply and fitting and get the cash. Otherwise, in a months time, the owner might develop a case of amnesia and make it all a PITA. Cash up front or through his insurance telling the truth would be my two options, then if it's cash find a cheap used bar to replace it and pocket the change.

Mechanic has spoken to the dad, and he is keen to just pay cash... Should have call back sarvo.
