Bird poo on canvas
« on: September 26, 2017, 11:18:52 AM »
Hi all,

New to the camper trailer world and I have a question about bird poo damaging canvas.

We were camping a week ago and when I packed up I noticed a few spots of bird poo.

I wasn’t worried about it thinking it was only cosmetic. However I have come to understand that bird poo can damage canvas.

Here is the kicker. I would go out now and clean it except I am stuck in bed after surgery and won’t be able to lift heavy objects for another 6 weeks.

I am concerned that leaving it this long will cause damage.

Perhaps the damage is already done?

I would appreciate some advice

Cheers

Over the years we have been spotted by our feathered friends a lot. Some seem to have no effect while others tend to fade the canvas slightly. I am pretty sure it won't have any great effect on the canvas, so don't stress about it.

When you can get up and about then open up the camper and remove the poo then. Don't scrub at it with a hard bristle brush (like I did to a tent years ago as it WILL take the colour out of the canvas), but get a very wet cloth and leave it sitting on the affected area to loosen up the now rock hard excrement, then wipe off. If it has faded slightly underneath then wear it as a badge of honour because it shows you are using your camper at least.

You are right with your first thought and that is to get it off as quickly as possible, certainly at the pack up stage. Just be thankful that it not a present left by bats, now that is fun.

Be thankful that it's not batchit. I didn't notice it on mine and when I did when packing up, the damage was done. It ate through the canvass.

So long as you have tried your best, you should have no regrets.

Thanks both for the info :) discolouration is ok, was worried it might cause a weakness in the canvas.

This forum is an incredible source of knowledge! Thanks

Bird poo doesn't seem to do any damage but as someone said..bat poo will eat car paint so possibly will damage canvas.  Up here in Cairns we sometimes get the cassowaries roosting in the trees and dropping turds like the size of cricket balls. They can do damage to your tent.
Having lots of friends on farcebook is the same as having lots of money in monopoly...means absolutely nothing!!
