Advice needed

Hi fellow campers our camping trailer decided to leak through the hard top while it wasn't being used, needless to say when we went to use it we had a mighty surprise. mould, rust, swollen wood. And the best news of all about 8 months out of warranty. But after a few months of emails to manufacturer they have agreed to supply parts to repair. And I am now getting a quote for the repair.
However my question is should I be going through insurance instead or should I be pushing for manufacturers to pay up. in accordance with consumer law?

Can you tell us more about the leak?  Bit hard to give an opinion without knowing some details.  But what a bugger, feel for you.  Kevin

Howdy, and welcome..
yeah, kinda hard to tell without knowing the circumstances.....but remember, warranty is not necessarily a defined period...... it is 'fit for purpose'..... so if the leak has nothing to do with age etc, and a design issue, the you have very right  to take it further with manufacturer.

Well it seems to have came in the hard top somewhere. Seeped through the main bed and everything can't tell if it's a join or where the roof cage is mounted but the seals are good and seal good the wood under the bed is water logged and that's the highest point.

Hi,
   I think insurance won't cover it. They usually require an ' event ' to trigger the claim process.
Did you have a storm that caused the damage?

An insurance job may be difficult to get over the line - they will send out a "Loss Adjustor"  - who's sole job is to minimize the cost to the insurer - (at least that's been the case in any claim I have been involved in)....

But if the thing comes with a 12 month warranty and it's basically under 2 years old and wrecked with water damage - how can that be fit for purpose....?

Depending on the whole context of what's happened to you - exercising your rights under Consumer Law may be the way to go....

I really feel for you though - terrible thing to have happened. .....

You probably need to really figure out why it leaked first before you decide on the best course of action, ie, if it was a manufacturing issue the, statutory warranty, is probably the way to go. If it was damaged and leaked then try the insurance avenue. If you just didn't seal it up properly then go with the manufacturer's offer of parts. If for example, you go down the statutory warranty path, only to have it shown it was your fault you could likely find the manufacturer isn't so forthcoming with their offer for the parts.

Take it away camping this weekend and "accidentally" have it catch fire from a stray ember from the campfire...insurance companies problem then  ;D

Well just got a quote “rough quote” back today and am looking at about $13000 to fit all the new parts. Not so impressed then they offered me a deal on one of there used campers.

 My wife is worried about using it because of the mold stains, can anyone that knows or has had experience tell me once it’s dead is it dead? Or will it always be there/come back?

Rust I think I can clean of and all other things we could live with. Not ideal but till we finish paying for it at least.

I suggest you need to take it to a repairer (independent) and get to ascertain how the leak is occurring. Then you have some information to take back to the manufacturer and have a discussion over "fit for purpose". Irrespective of warranty purpose. If has rust due to the leak, then it obviously has been leaking for a while.
You need to get something off to the manufacturer stating the issue, to make sure you have some type of time stamp on advising them.

If the quote you got has come back from the manufacturer, then they have a vested interest in making it large, to sell you another.

You also need to consult a specialist vehicle detailer about your concerns over the mould.
It is a specialist occupation.

Can you please confirm I m reading this correctly.

The manufacture gave you a rough quote of $13000 to repair your camper trailer and they are supplying the parts for free?

They advertise on there web site a new one is $25K.

13K is a Shit load of labor even at $120 an hour that that's three weeks work for a bloke.

sounds like these guys a having a lend of you mate.

as suggested might be worth trying to find how & why it leaked to give to a direction to head
