But my point was/is, the equally as old Toshiba running win7 was pretty fast and certainly quite liveable with compared to the “newer” laptops I have.

big cause of that is windows 7 was designed for older hardware than windows 10...

if you were able to install windows 3.11 onto a laptop bought today, it would fly...

Surely they didn’t take minutes to fire up when new ? When you say grossly underpowered……is that in todays terms or did they sell laptops yrs ago that were grossly underpowered ??

When you say PEBKAC issues…..I don’t even know if you’re swearing at me or not ??   ;D

you can buy a brand new laptop from a shop today and it can be grossly underpowered for what it required from it.

OS specs are generally minimum specs.  they are the specs required for the OS to run, not necessarily run well.

if you have a bare minimum specced laptop with windows 10 installed, it might well run slowly...

i'll let you google what PEBKAC means on your flash ipad...  ;D

PEBKAC wasn't aimed at you specifically... which is why i added the 'with all due respect'...

human errors/lack of knowledge is a big part of why things go wrong with PC's... just a fact...

lack of knowledge isn't a crime... not everyone likes to get into the nitty gritty, they just want it to work... i can respect that...

it's like the Honda advert from a few years ago... 'isn't it just nice when everything works'...

This is why "I things" are good for the non computer savvy.. It's a lot harder to break them.. (OS wise, not physically LOL), and why many people say they love them....

so, what's your alternative?

android?

righto...

i'll take my chances with apple devices, which work and are secure, as opposed to android, which are less secure and need more work to administer in a family environment, especially for those of us with special needs kids.

i'm not buying the latest and greatest every year, but i appreciate the undeniable fact that they work with minimal fuss.

everything needs an account these days ???

Some newer HP printers will NOT print a single page unless they have internet connectivity and you've linked them to an "HP Smart" account

Windows 10 will not allow for uninstall of 5009543. It is apparently necessary for your system according to the MS overlords

Microsoft Office Pro Plus 2021 licences for $40 on Facebook Marketplace. Since clicking on a NAS for sale, I regularly get offers of perpetual single user licences for various MS Office bundles for anywhere from$15 to $40 for a 2021 Pro Plus licence. Does anyone know if these are genuine licences on offer? Since retiring I've got by on a 2013 Pro Plus package I had for work at home, and have had no reason to upgrade. Recently I received a notification that from the end of May, gmail would no longer work on the 2013 version of Outlook. For $30-$40 it's not worth me changing my habit of using Outlook to organise my emails so I'm tempted.

All the latest versions of office since 2013 are subscription based, so you pay every year. To the best of my knowledge

3rd month in last 5 update disasters???

Issue / Fault definition
Microsoft recently released the Windows Server 2012 R2 KB5009624 update, the Windows Server 2019 KB5009557 update, and the Windows Server 2022 KB5009555 update as part of the January 2022 Patch Tuesday.

After installing these updates Admins are reporting various issues including –

Windows domain controller boot loops
Hyper-V no longer starting
ReFS file systems are no longer accessible
Impact
Windows Server 2012 R2
Windows Server 2019
Windows Server 2022
Updates KB5009624, KB5009557 and KB5009555
Known Fixes / Solutions
To fix the issue boot into SafeMode, CMD from a recovery console or DSRM and remove the update.

Windows Server 2012 R2: wusa /uninstall /kb:KB5009624
Windows Server 2019: wusa /uninstall /kb:KB5009557
Windows Server 2022: wusa /uninstall /kb:KB5009555
Other possible fixes
The moment you first logon.
1. Immediately run command prompt, right click, run as administrator (just incase)
2. type in “net stop netlogon” (shows The Netlogon service was stopped successfully.)
3. Program and Features
4. Select Uninstall (click on Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5009557)
5. You must restart your computer to apply these changes (click Restart Later)
6. Select Uninstall (click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5008873)
7. You must restart your computer to apply these changes (click Restart Now)

The issue of reboots only happens if 2 or more DC’s have the update installed. Just turn off 1 dc or boot it into safemode without networking and the other DC stops rebooting. Then you have at least 1 DC up for people to continue work and you have time to uninstall the patches.

Mitigation
Delay roll out of any of the affected patches.

patches have been causing issues since patches were invented...

every OS has issues with patches.  windows has more, because their install base is so huge.

there is always going to be a scenario where the patch hasn't been tested against some obscure installation config.

it's just not possible to test against every possible permutation.

that's why you test your patches before deploying.
