The days when you could just trust everyone at a camp site seem to be gone. Wondering what people do with valuables like camera gear, tablets and laptops where you're out and about? Leave in the tent/van or in the vehicle? Rely on out-of-sight-out-of-mind or secure it somehow?

Normally wouldn't have too much of value with us but currently planning a much longer trip where between the kids and us we'll end up with a decent amount of tech.

Normally we leave the phones and camera in the car, and have a tool box on the front of our camper that I leave my radio and other tools in, but that would only keep some out, I do worry about leaving the camp site st most places

When ever we'd go away from camp for walks etc, I'll carry our camera bag on my back and chuck IPads etc in that. The bag is fairly heavy with everything in it, but I don't leave valuables in the camper or fourby myself.

x2. Sometimes can be a pain lugging all the tech crap but much better than trying to replace it and the photos, never mind the inconvenience etc. Can't steal it if it's not there....

Far out. I cant imagine doing a hike with 3 tablets 3 cameras a laptop and any other valuables with me.
Find a good spot thats out of sight. Theives are opportunists. If they can't see an opportunity they wont bother...now that opportunity can be just where you park your car.

I agree on the not carrying but each of my kids can take their own Shit.. you bring it, you carry it!

Scum - If they see you drive away with the family etc, theres every chance your going to be a while.. they can take their time and its happened and will again ... Peoples fridges get stolen off Fraser Island on the beach while people are sleeping in their trailer.

We had the same concerns some time back, this won't help with laptops and tablets etc but for phones, money, wallets and keys this works fine. The yanks love car/4x4 safes and that's where I got the idea.
It's on a stainless steel lanyard fixed around the drivers seat bracket, the other end of the cable in the safe box is inserted and wraped around a pin then bolted to another pin so no one can get a straight line pull to try and steal the whole box.
Once under the seat you can't see it and it'll take awhile to unbolt the seat and or break into the steel box !

Sorry for the more that average photos guys, the camera in the phone didn't like Bushmans on it and it's etched the glass

We have a lockable clothes drawer as part of the trailer and if not using them will leave them locked in there. Like others have said, nothing is perfect but should be able to make suitable insurance claim if does go missing from there.

We kept the box from when we bought our kettle and pop our valuables in it. We keep that under the bed.
It's not perfect, but it keeps the opportunists at bay.

I figure if you make it look secure such as a lock box or similar they will cut it and take it.
Most of the time our wallets and phones are with us, but if we have to leave them we lock them in the car in a fake first aid kit bag.

Other ideas I have seen are a cereal box in the pantry. No one would ever take that, or a lockable hatch hidden in the rear bar.

Honestly we take all the valuables with us. Fridge is permanently in the car, camera etc. comes with me wherever I go. I agree with the comment about thieves being opportunists for the most part. If you do leave gear in an unattended vehicle - locked or unlocked - keep the valuable stuff out of sight! Its not hard to stuff a blanket or jumper or something over valuables hiding in the foot wells/under seats/behind ute seats/etc. Even things left at camp, like our stove, will usually be out of sight.

Another idea - get to know your camping neighbours a little. If you've had a bit of a chat to them and they recognise you and your vehicle, they will hopefully realise if someone who doesn't belong comes by to raid your campsite.

do what you like with your gear, I don't own 3 cameras for a start, and a couple of IPads and phones aren't exactly heavy. I carried a baby in a back pack carrier up Bald Rock and The Pyramid and Girraween years ago,  atleast the camera bag sits still and doesn't fall asleep leaning to one side...lol

I screwed on a matching piece about 150mm forward of the rear of the drawer, when open it looks like the back of the drawer. It's big enough to put wallets, small cameras etc although you could make it bigger. By the time you lock the car and lock the drawer it provides reasonable security. Not perfect but its done the job for us on a number of trips.

Could always do like the local drug dealers around my work do and package your stuff in an old  Maccas or KFC paper bag and leave it laying around in your truck or camper .[ the dopes stash these bags in our hedges for drop offs and pick ups ]

Wallet/phone etc live in the car usually if they are not on us. It's a bit easier now that our 'camper' has hard walls and roof, we can lock the door.

As for opportunists, I think I need a lock for the Waeco that lives in the annex. It's cabled to the van so harder to walk off with, but it can be opened up without a key and that means we'll be short of drinks - which is not good.

We put our gear that needs locking up in one of the drawers in the back of the ute, and I've got a wet key for if we're swimming that gets tied to my boardies, and the regular keys locked inside the canopy...

Seems to work for us so far

I think part of it depends on who & where you camp?

I've just spent most of 4 days camping & some of the cars there had their doors left wide open for the entire time, so obviously no security concerns there!

Mind you, I was camping with a very high-class, exclusive group of people
