Drill Bit/Knife/Chisel Sharpeners Recommendations Please
« on: March 30, 2017, 06:37:26 PM »
As I've gotten older my skills with oil stones has waned I'm afraid,  :'( so I've decided that a good combination sharpener could be just the ticket.
These are the sort I'm looking at

These are incredible.   Results are truly brilliant, and watching them in use is mesmerising.

Ah, but you forget that with this you could go into the sharpening business to recoup the cost. ;)

I was given one (will check brand tomorrow) and the plastic that it relies on for correct angle is crap and never did the right angle.  Ozito might be ok but check the build quality.

I have seen some other drill specific sharpeners that I think would be better.

For drills get a drill point gauge and keep a dedicated 6" bench grinder for the purpose well dressed with good wheels that's all you need. For putting an edge on a knife that's dulled you need a guided stone sharpener about $60 bucks depending at a hunting store. It doesn't  remove metal like a lot of the shaver type but takes time. Then for keeping the edge on good kitchen knives I use a Fuji diamond lap thing even the wife can keep the edge constantly and takes no skill/time.
Here for a good time, not a long time!

http://lansky.com/index.php/products/dlx-5-stone-system/

Works for me.

Edit: i used it the first time in a while today, its xu1 not ozito

The xu1 one has holes you drop the drill bits into and a beveled stone tbat runs horizontaly inside.
Its cheap and nasty but mine still cuts a good edge.
Having said that im gental with it but ive done alot of drill bits

I have a lansky and I can shave with my damascas knives.
The stainless knives, not so much, butvstill seriously sharp.

I also use baby oil as a lubricant and oilive oil as a rust preventitive after sharpening.

Buy a step drill and never sharpen a drill bit again. Get your knives relanded and double beveled by a knife doctor. Look after them and touch them up on a steel. For bulk fish cleaning we use cheap butchers knives and an accu sharp - look them up and keep them away from good kitchen knives. Stuffing about sharpening expensive gear will land you at the knife doctor anyway.

I have found Ozito stuff very good (for the price) and the warranty is unbeatable. However of the three you listed in the opening post, ONLY the second one can do up to 13mm Dia. drills. The rest are up to 10mm only.
I think you should buy it (No. 2) and do a 'review' for Swaggers. It would be a rewarding experience. ;D

I know this is too expensive, but I thought people might be interested in a Russian knife sharpening gizmo, it is like a Lanky on steroids.

I think I'll get the Ozito from the BGS, for $40-00 and 3 years warranty  I think it will do what I need. 90% of my drilling is done with a cordless drill so 10mm is the max it will take.
How rewarding would a review be  ??? >:D

I'm sure your generous Victorian Swagger mates will work out something appropriate.😊
