Tarp to Pegs - how do you do it?
« on: March 20, 2017, 02:46:00 PM »
So we're off at Easter for a week. Mid-North Coast NSW. That likely means rain (fingers crossed not, but...). The CT is good in the wet, but I'd like to throw my large tarp over it if it looks like rain. I do not want to use poles (we do have them but I'd prefer not to use them if possible).

So at either end there will be a reasonable amount of overlap. The tarp is 24" long. The CT when setup is about 16" wide. So that leaves around 4 feet at either end. I'd "like" to attach ropes to the tarp holes and go straight on to the pegs.

Do anyone else do this (ie, without poles)? If so, how do you do it? What do you use - some carabiners?

I just like the idea of the tarp wrapping the CT and not having to worry about the wind. It will only be for when it's actually raining. Normally we will not use the tarp. We don't have a tropical roof (it's "on the list").

Thoughts and comments appreciated.

I always have something springy when tying things down, actual springs, occy straps etc

Can I also recommend that you rope/s to hold the tarp down.  I have found most damage occurrs when the wind gets under the tarp and turns it into a parachute.  The rope/s is to limit this.

If you work out a way to suspend your tarp over the top of your caravan without it resting,  that is your tropical roof sorted.  Or at least that's my understanding of what a tropical roof is.

So far as attaching ropes to your tarp.  I presume you dont want to just tie a knot after feeding the guy rope through the eyelet?

It would get pretty messy if leaving them like that, and a pain on packup.

I am not sure carabiners would work well though,  the cheap, non climbing ones cant take much load in my experience and the dear, climbing ones are too dear and good for this purpose.

You could get these: https://www.tentworld.com.au/buy-sale/boltan-tarpchoker-25kg-6-pack

I'd permanently attach these to your guy ropes and then use these to locate onto your tarp wherever you like.  They dont use the eyelets of your tarp,  but are relocatable and fairly easy to attach to the tarp.

You will want to be careful when creating this setup though.  To make sure you're not creating great places for water to pool on your camper.  It could be good to perhaps have one pole in the middle up high and then sort of A frame it down from there.  This would give the 'Tropical Roof' too.

Not sure if I'm on the right thought path with this one or not.  Sorry If I'm off on the wrong direction!

Some foam pool noodles between tarp and CT roof, instant tropical roof :cup:

Use bungy cords or springs and just tie a knot through the eyelet, simple.

Thanks all. I'm thinking Occy Straps. The pool noodles are a great idea as well!
