1st Camper, What do you guys pack??
« on: March 04, 2017, 12:31:54 PM »
Hi All,

Finally get out first camper in two weeks time and am chasing a little help on what else to buy and/or pack for the camper. Obviously this will depend on where we are going and for how long, but chasing some basic must haves for your CT's.

Camper is a Modcon FF1 and I have beer and bacon on the list!

Bubble level and a whisk.
I used to include a cheese grater, but just buy it shaved or pregrated, so dumped it after last trip.

The bare minimum needed to be comfortable [ Leave all the other crap at home ] multi use cooking pots / pan utensiles .. Easy to wash / dry Clothes + seasonal addons x 1  as needed,  5 x changes PP for adults little extra for kids depends on age .. 1x bath towel 1x beach towel each ..
1x pak of 300mm quality zip ties and 1x roll of quality gaffa tape, 10m of annexe rope, cheap 8x10 poly tarp for shade / ground sheet if needed etc ..
Good hammer and 1x  hacksaw that can be disassembled and a few blades [ multi uses]   .. Unpackage and mark boxed general and  food stuffs to limit trash, we  deflate air out of bags of chips and reseal  to gain space in the food storage .
Food is worked out and packed in main  meal lots only to suit the number of days away and amounts that leave almost no left overs / waste,  with extra  2 days meals as variations to mix and match with as needed. basic breakfast / lunch options cereal, bread, flat breads , cold meat knob,  cheese etc,  pancake mix  bacon egg in meal lots x days away
Fridge / food / drink always stays with our truck [ If stuck away from camp you have it ] .

If you have rented it before than throw all that gear in and go from there.

What to pack on your first trip? Everything!

Then every trip from then on leave at home what you didn't use on the last one. After about 10 trips you can get down to only really need, and you'll be surprised at all the crap you used to think was needed.

On a more serious note.

We set up our camper so we have everything we need. When we first started I would write down all the meals I was making and make sure we had all the utensils and pots etc to be able to do it. I also got one of those camping list you can get from camping sites, stores etc and started my own spread sheet which I adjusted to suit me.

Always make sure you pack the duck tape, most important camping item regardless of how you are doing it.

As you go along you will change you mind on what you think you need and don't need, but try and not go over board as it having too much stuff is nearly as frustrating and not enough.  If you always have a warm bed, chair, food and water you will survive.

Try to get things that have more than one use
Shovel - use around the camp fire, get you out of a bog, help you take a bog by digging your toilet
Tomahawk - bang in tent pegs, cut up kindling etc
Pots and pans - our can be used on electric, gas and coals
Plastic tub - wash up in, carry your dirty plates etc to and from camp kitchen, wash basin on the end of the bench for the kids to wash their hands in during the day
Rope - make a swing, extra tie downs for poles or tarps

You get the idea.

I always try to convince my partner not to pack some stuff but I always get beaten. But the best advice I have seen is to put a red stick on spot on everything you pack and take. Peel off when you use it and those with spots still on leave at home.

But then my wife ignores me anyway. I just get better at packing and keeping my mouth shut.

Have faith, I was one of those over packers for years but have finally conceded not being surrounded by useless crap is an amazing life changing experience.
