Export CT to Europe
« on: February 28, 2017, 09:32:09 AM »
Hi, has anyone had experience or tried exporting a camper trailer/caravan to Europe from Australia?  I am considering taking my CT to the UK and while getting it there is pretty straightforward the meeting EU regulations does not seem as straightforward.

I see a number of buses and other vehicles in Aus from overseas, England, Europe, the US and other countries according to the number plates, people doing a world trip. some of them are towing caravans. I would hopefully assume that they are here legally with correct paperwork.
NRMA (in NSW) used to provide an advice service for aussies to do the same thing.  Possibly a Carnet de Passage to ensure that it comes back out and not an excuse to import and sell and any appropriate signage.
The only possible complications may be hooking up euro power to the CT you may need adaptors/rewire of connectors.
Personally I think it is doable, but is it worth it as opposed to buying/hiring one over there and selling/returning at the end of the trip?

Are you taking your car over as well??

Either way it should be too much different to taking a car over so long as it's registered and insured.

Have you spent time in the UK before? Only asking because I don't see the UK being very CT friendly.  It's not really set up for roadside free camping and if you've got a conventional CT then it's a miserable climate for camping under canvas.

Have a look on exploration portal fourm. There are plenty to learn there as that is where all the big toys that go globe troting are
Need to get the backside into gear and get out camping

Couple of things to think about:
-electric trailer brakes are not legal in the UK/EU
-power supply is via 13amp Euro round socket nearly all the time, but we had European household to blue plug and UK 3 pin to Blue plug adapters.
-Gas fittings will need changing to suit propane or butane as they work
-50mm ball hitches are the only readily accepted ones
-Trailers run 7 pin large N & S or 13 pin European
-Trailers must have a rear fog light

Hope that helps,

Ed

Just take a 4WD that you can sleep in....you don't see many overlanders towing.

Read a blog the other day and a family spent 30 days in one country in Europe and only had three days it didn't rain.......27 days of rain is making me nervous about our setup.

Just read your website, I guess you know all about the weather.

Do you still have the RRT??

I assume you are taking the D3 and the DOT6 Camper?

Does that mean you will be shipping both in a 40' shipping container??

Don't have the rooftop tent anymore but yes planning on shipping just the DOT if it's not too hard for conversion.

Yes for the UK alone but go across to the continent and its a different story, not much camping on the side of the M1.

Talking about it with the wife today; are you taking it short term or emigrating with it? If short term than most of what I have said is moot.

If emigrating then you may need to check the legalities of the modifications on the Discovery as well.

Yup. Not taking the Disco, just the CT and emigrating across so not just travelling. Yes. Might end up being too hard though so might have to sell both at the end of this trip.

I'd recommend contacting the Camping and Caravanning Club's technical desk for advice? That would be my first port of call and there going from there.

I thinking kight be easier than you think as there is no need for rego or RWCs for trailers in the UK.

The only other question is, do you have UK licence already? If so is it a pre 1997 one? If not, then the rules for towing may get complicated...

PM me with any other questions and I will see what I can help with
