LG front loading washing machine problem

G'day everyone.

I have an LG WD-1049c front loading washing machine that has just yesterday developed a problem. (Its about 10 years old). It was running normally but then the RCD of the house tripped. When I put the power back on, the washer, when restarted, was making a funny noise and would no longer spin properly.

Doing some research I found there is a diagnostic mode as follows:

Diagnostic mode: left option button together with spin button, then press the power button.

Diagnostic tests are similar or same as the following:

Diagnostic mode:Number of times play button pressed

None=Turns on all lamps and locks door
1 times=tumble clockwise
2 times=Low speed spin
3 times=High speed spin
4 times=Inlet valve for prewash turns on
5 times=Inlet valve for mainwash turns on
6 times=Inlet valve for hot water turns on
7 times=Inlet valve for bleach turns on
8 times=Tumble counterclockwise
9 times=Heater turns on for 3 seconds
10 times=circulation pump turns on
12 times=Power off and unlock door

When the motor is trying to spin it staggers and starts and stop, but does not spin continuously. (It can be spun freely by hand).

So to me there are two options, either the motor is faulty or the control board is faulty.

Have any of you guys had any problems like this and can give some suggested solutions, that would be great.

Motor brushes stuffed and or maybe commutator stuffed (depending on type of motor). They also won't spin if they think they are still full of water.

l have a Magic Pixie floor ,,,,,,,,,, chuck your dirty cloths on it & they disappear  only to resurface in the dresser draws .  Clean , folded  & ready for another day of toil only to be flung yet again .  Am l lucky ,,,,,,   or just well cared for ,,,,,

I'll start with motor brushes first as they are the cheapest and work my way up if that doesn't do it.

10 years for relatively cheap white good appliance in the modern consumption era....you are doing well IMO. I have similar - a 7.5kg front loader bought new in 2005. When it starts playing up I'm not spending a single cent on it.

Gotta agree with the 10 yr throwaway thing but I've got a Speed Queen top loader and I bought that because it doesn't take half a bloody day to do a wash like these 'Green' machines do nowadays in order to lower peak demand on the grid. They still have mechanical timers rather than risky motherboards in humid laundrys and they're bulletproof. Not cheap but it was the washing time that got to me like the cara parks

I spent a few months playing with my partners front loading washer, every now and again when she used it
the RCD would trip.

I checked out everything expecting to see some water damage, couldn't see any, checked the filter
capacitors etc on the PCB and again drew blank.

We just got used to leaving the garage door open in case the RCD tripped. Then the water pump
jammed and we found what look like some sort of cement in it, I assume this was some sort of
balancing medium for the drum. This happened a few times then the machine stopped with smoke
coming from inside the machine, smoke on the water! 

Anyway at that point I decided it was most likely a faulty heating element so decided to fix it for once
and for all, so brought a new machine

Finding one to fit in the space was another headache though.

True but the plus about any metro area with dudes like Appliancesonline is 2 burly blokes come round with your new washer in a truck and unpackage it and set it up and take away your old clunker and the packaging and all you have to do is get out the spirit level and tweak it absolutely plumb for max longevity.
I do enjoy my trips out bush but there's something about metropolitan living that keeps drawing me back

G'day all,

Fixed it. Turns out it was a fault motor. Bought a new motor and now all good. Cheaper than a new machine and better than buying a 2nd hand machine where don't know how long it will last or its history, reliability. Hope to get another 10 years out of it.

Or to put it another way suppose you get 10 yrs out of that new one then it's $1.32/week in depreciation in today's after tax leftovers and you don't buy the odd cup of coffee each week do you?

I had a front loader die after 7 years. It essentially was always outside as the north Qld  laundry was under the house and open on 3 sides. I figured the dust kicked up by the dogs got into the motor and chewed the brushes out over time.

$80 for a new motor and I was back in the game... for a while.

A few months later it got out of balance and started flogging its self to death. There was a big saddle shaped lump of concrete on top of the tub, one of the bolts broke lose, 1000rpm spin cycle and the thing started walking across the floor with grey dust coming out of the case.

I was on trainee wages at the time, so I stripped it down, pulled the drum out and took it into work. Armed with a hammer, stainless steel off-cuts, a spot welder and a massive tube of silicone I patched the cracks and made it waterproof again.
Got another 4 years out of it until ballast block broke lose again and the wife that was sick of 1.5 hour wash cycles and was dealing with a 6 month old baby decreed that a top loader was going to be the replacement.

I'm living with one again now, they do a good job on bugger-all water, but the cycle time is a pain. I inherited this one of my Mum, its only about 20 years old, hopefully I can get a few years out of it.
