What's your experience with induction cook tops?

Anyone here use induction cook tops?
If so, has anyone ever used them in a camper situation?
I'd imagine you'd have to have plenty of power on tap, but any particular details that you would care to share?

Personal experience only, go induction for boiling, gas for frying.

It looks to me that you need plug in or generator power.  Some are pretty cheap so might be worth a look for caravan park stays.

I checked these out at the Redcliffe show....I'm temped given the lack of space in the Poptop and might be better for cooking in a confined space instead of a Coleman dual fuel, plus when we are overseas we won't have gas.

The demo guy indicated using the 1000w setting when using an inverter off 12v.

I think my sums are right

1000/12 = 83amp/hr
13-14 amps if you spend 10 minutes cooking (although as soon as you take the pan off I assume the power drops right off)

Demos always look good...these were 200$ and assembled in Brisbane. Certainly looked a quality unit.

Realistically 1000 watts out of an inverter will be closer to 100 amps, which will knock your batteries around a lot.

Drawing 100 amps out of a C20 rated battery you will get a lot less than its rated mathematical capacity and lead to a much shorter service life of the battery.

Most probably worth the switch to a lithium battery bank if it is unavoidable.

Good point.......my gut feel on the day was not to buy.

Back to destroying brain cells when the weather is bad with dual fuel.

I prefer to use single malt therapy for getting rid of excess brain cells.

We have one in the Vista for convenience when stopping at powered sites.

Now we have Lithium's we toyed with the idea of putting in an inverter with bypass function so that it could be used
seamlessly either off 240V or battery but the inverters required to run the hot plate are large and finding somewhere
to fit would be the problem, not to mention the hit on the batteries. We would only use it to boil water for lunch
stops or for soup when bad weather makes using the outside kitchen impractical. Hmm come to think of it might
look into the inverter again.
