What size magnets
« on: February 23, 2017, 07:15:21 AM »
I'm looking at using rare earth magnets to hold up about a metre of led strip lighting in the camper. Can anyone who has done similar recommend what size magnet to use. I've never used these before.
I'm thinking of stealing an idea from here .... Putting the strip in aluminium channel and gluing the magnets to that.
Cheers

Not sure if Bumblings still have them, try the door latch section ? I got a stack of four button magnets approx 10mm Dia and 4mm thick each, Sorry cant remember the price ..
They are very strong [ currently using them to hold the door of the camper closed instead of a latch lock ] ..
Jaycar are expensive for magnets too .
When yo glue them onto the ally, shrink  a piece of electric shrink wrap over them and the strip to help keep them in place

when i made my first set of LED lights, i used two magnets (got them from ebay) which were about 30mm long by 10mm wide by 5mm deep, and then as previous posters have said, just used some heatshrink to keep it on the PVC, which i used used as a base for the strip lighting...

two of these magnets were sufficient to hold up a metre long piece of PVC with LED strip lighting attached.

I was a tight*rse, I stripped out the magnetic flexible strip from an old fridge seal, and glued that to the backs of my aluminium LED strips.
4.2L TD Toyota Troopy, (Clarke's Country Camper Trailer, softfloor.) sold it and bought a Avan Ray small poptop caravan.

I have used 10mm x 3mm round rare earth /neodymium magnets and they are plenty strong enough.

If you are not in a big rush then they can be had pretty cheap here.

Anyone using rare earth magnets should be aware that they can be very dangerous if swallowed and have been banned for use in/as toys. Not a big issue if you are careful with them but just something to be aware of, especially if you have little kids.
