Need a different camping spot
« on: February 07, 2017, 04:14:04 PM »
Hi all.
I'm looking for somewhere different to take the youngen camping/fishing. Within a couple hours of Grafton, beach or river. I've been to the obvious ones, station creek, pebbly beach, dalmorton, buccarumbi.

Just going to swag it so a small area is fine. Less people the better.

Thanks in advance for any replies.
Cheers

G'day Shunt,
You could try The Gorge, Lillydale, Yates Crossing,  The Nymboida Camp Ground( http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/camping-and-accommodation/campgrounds/nymboida-river-campground ) will suit you for being an out of the way small camp ground. don't get put of by the fact that it is in national Park, it is still a free camp ground. No Dogs tho, also if you didn't know, the rivers are closed at Certain times of the year to fishing.
The Clarence Valley is vast, I've been a member of the Grafton & Districts 4wd Club for a few years, President for two and I have not seen a tenth of it.
There are also a few of us Swaggers in the Valley, so give a shout out.
Oh, today I bumped into Mick, I've known Mick for 15 years, he has set up a retreat near Ashby.
https://www.facebook.com/Michaels-Clarence-Valley-Retreat-291722580896554/
You could give that a crack.
Happy & Safe travels.

How much rain have you had Cowwee? The river might be a bit weedy at the moment.

It was weedy at Xmas time....but there are a lot of secret pools that are quite deep. Haven't had a lot of rain unfortunately

Just spoken to Max & there have been some nice fish caught although the river is a bit low. It's still pretty dry down there  & they're in the process of moving cattle to the tablelands even though there has been some recent showers.

Thanks guys.

I have stayed at east kunderang before and it is a great area so have been keen to get to west for a while but that may be a full family trip with the camper trailer.

Might try Nymboida.

Keep the suggestions coming. I'm sure there are others that are searching the same info.

Yes I know their Caravan parks but free camping is frowned on by the our local councils http://www.wooyungbeach.com.au/ doesnt get real busy, older facilities .5 k walk  from surf beach [Would advise no swimming ] not far from tidal Creek  short drive to Pottsville  / Brunswick heads ..Used to be a beach track south to Brunswick heads but may have been totaly closed .
Closer to you is http://www.fishinghaven.com.au/  from what Ive been told is a great little place right on the river .

We've 'camped' on the dune tracks just north of that park many, many times. Surf up at the rocks all day, then just before dark zip into one of the tracks that was sheltered from the road for a fire and some beers, sleep on the sand or in the back of the utes or panel vans. Up at dawn and back into the surf.
That was the first place I ever took the wife camping, cooked 2 fillets of coral trout on a little grill over the fire and slept in the swag on the beach. She's been hooked on all 3 ever since..... :) That 3 is; me, coral trout and camping of course. ;)

Great bit of the world down there, sadly I think it won't be too long before it gets swallowed up with development though.

No ones suggested The Junction yet on the Nymboida, great swimming spot and a some good fishing there. Only 5 sites or so and NPWS charge $5/person IIRC for it, but it was great when we went there last year with the swags.

Hey mate,
I forgot about Hanging Rock, Spent Fathers Day there last year.
And the Broad Water, the double bridge down the dirt road just off the Gwydir highway.

The picture you posted is at what we call Hanging rock, a more shade to at the broadwater(Double Timber Bridge).
See attached map.
If you were to turn right at the end of that concrete cause way the road will bring you to Carnham Rd, which will take you to  Clarence Way.
When the country has had a good drink, the country looks awesome.

I have been to the Junction few times. Both camping and day trips. Awesome spot. Always caught fish.

Hey mate, only going on google earth and you "locals" may have been getting it wrong for a long time !!  ;D ;D
According to google the concrete causway is the Broadwater and the other one is Cangai bridge !!!

I did turn right and meandered along to the Clarence Way....love poking along back roads....sure are lots of people who like living away from civilization ..

Fair call, we do call the double timber bridge the broadwater, cause it is deeper and wider.
