ACMA says that 40 channel UHF is now ok...
« on: February 03, 2017, 07:54:35 PM »
well that's good to know...

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-02-03/acma-reverses-decision-ruling-millions-of-uhf-radios-illegal/8235502

"The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has reversed its decision to make 40 channel UHF radios illegal from June 2017.

It is estimated there are thousands of UHF, or citizens band (CB) radios on farms and in trucks, caravans and businesses throughout Australia.

Upgrading to 80 channel radios was going to cost some businesses tens of thousands of dollars.

The manager of spectrum licencing policy at ACMA, Dominic Byrne, said the two systems are working well alongside each other so the authority had decided to remove the requirement to upgrade to 80 channel UHF sets."

"The bottom 40 of an 80 channel radio is exactly the same," he said."

How were they planning on policing / enforcing it and who was going to be in charge of doing that?

Agree Drew, be real hard to enforce.
The newer 80 Ch. sets just use a narrower bandwidth for each Channel.
The Newer plan was created by halving the channel width and fitting the next 40 Ch.'s in between the existing channels.

Common sense from a government department!
It seems that the original concern that the broader bandwidth of the older sets would interfere with the in between channels (41-80) didn't happen when tested in the real world.

Yeah, except even more impossible >:D At least you can see & smell someone smoking - when you hear someone talking on channel 18, it's a bit hard to tell whether they've got 40 or 80 channels on their radio! :D

Just pull over any pre 2011 vehicle that's fitted with a UHF antenna and arrest them if they've got a 40CH unit.

Sounds easy enough....

This was posted on another forum and sums it up very well.  Thanks boobook  :cup:

"That ABC article misquotes ACMA.

However they now have a draft recommendation out for comment that proposes dropping the rule that bans 40 Channels.

This is crazy and everyone should put in a submission asking that the law does not change. I know that people who still have 40 channel radios will say " I would never use the new channels anyway, so I want to keep mine" but the problem is that we now have 2 incompatible systems.

1)Those who have complied with the law and invested in a new CB are now being punished.
2)Channels 41 - 80 are generally clear of the swearing and abuse present in the older channels, unless those users are close. Now this will continue past July.
ACMA is leaving the UHF community with interference issues forever. This is exactly what they are supposed to stop.

So now the situation is that if there are 2 or more people with 80 channel radios then there is no interference and it works. Same if everyone in the same area has 40 channel radios. But if one or more have 80 channels and using channels 41 - 80, and one or more with 40 channel radios then they interfere with each other with garbled talking. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it wont.

It's like the government is changing from driving on the left side of the road to the right, with a deadline of July. Some people bought new cars to work with the new system and no old cars have been allowed to be sold for 6 years. Now they stopped the change and say doesn't matter what car you have, just drive on the side of the road that you prefer.

It is crazy not to proceed. They have left the 4wd community half pregnant."

I thought CB's were a bit of the thing of the past? Not sure about truckies, but most road users seem to use Facebook these days.

So one article, supposedly quoting the ACMA, says that it's been shown in the real world that there's no interference, & someone else's rant says there is ??? Who are you supposed to believe ???

Once the horse has bolted its a bit late. I remember back in the days of 27Mhz radios (was selling them in my shop) All started with a flood of 23Ch American sets, the market quickly flooded with them illegaly to start with. Then the Govt decided we should have 18Ch 27Mhz sets, these were not popular then it shifted to 40Ch 27Mhz. Just another storm in a teacup with UHF.

We're still allowed 27Mhz sets, as long as they meet the type approval.
18 Ch. or 40Ch. on the allowed frequencies.
Must be channel selected, not just turning a VFO so you get all the extra in between the allowed frequencies.

The ACMA still have enforcement officers, and will respond to complaints made.
If they find a problem they usually seize the offending equipment.
And may take all the rest to make sure there's no more problems, depending on the attitude they encounter.
Some RI's are better than others, and it could depend on who they've seen earlier that day.
Then you have to get it back if you feel the need.
