Emptying porta pottie into drop toilet
« on: January 28, 2017, 03:23:36 PM »
Gday all
Is there a porta pottie holding tank chemical that allows you to empty the contents into a drop toilet without ruining the drop toilet?
Thanks

Tablets called Odour-B-gone for the sump of the porta potti are supposed to be ok.

My understanding of the long drop / enviro / eco toilets, is that they rely on bacteria to break down the waste / paper, so things like chlorine/ bleach and formaldehyde kill bacteria. I have been using bio magic for years which is supposed to enhance the natural breaking down of organic matter. I cannot see the problem with this going down (have not done it), I suspect the powers that be think a flat ban will stop people who don't know or don't care doing the wrong thing.
Maybe someone on here will know for sure.
Cheers

My way of thinking and camping has been, if you have a drop toilet....use it for no2's.. The missus has a porta potti for no1's and it gets emptied beside a tree/in the long grass/out the back of the van etc....but it doesn't have chemicals added, so no different to blokes ( or kangaroos ) having a pee beside a tree.

If ya didn't eat it I don't think it should be put into long drop/eco toilet

I'd expect the chemicals would give issues to the system process.

Cheers

I've seen a few drop toilets that have signs stating not to empty chemical toilets into them.

This is what we swaped to and it works well with no smell and breaks down everything fairly quickly.
Also makes a good surface spray for the kitchen ect..
Safe for septic, long drop and sewerage systems too.

The balance of liquid vs solids for the bactaria to work in the long drop needs to be considered.
To much liquid and as has been mentioned the bacteria die of also so it's not just about the chemicals used.

A bit of reading.

For the record I use the napisan oxy style packets in ours but I haven't ever emptied into a long drop.

I did find that site last night, gbc.
Might be worth speaking to someone from National parks to get their thoughts. They might give me an answer on the quiet.

IMO the answer is do not empty porta potties in any drop toilets whether your brew is drop toilet friendly or not.
If you do it the sheep will follow.
Use a designated dump point.

Same here. I may know that any chemicals I use are OK, but anyone seeing me empty mine into a long drop may do the same. Better to use a dump point if possible.

Biomagic works quite well and I believe Enviropro do a similar product.

You can tip these into pit toilets but in the last two years could never bring myself to do it for reasons of potentially copping abuse but also setting a wrong example for those not in the know and using chemicals.

All these issues are behind me now. I ditched the cassette toilet and installed a composting toilet  :cup: :cup: which we used for the first time for four days this weekend. Simply awesome with absolutely no smell, no consumption of water with each use and no need to use a dump point ever again.

I would agree, the council or other has provided the drop toilets, if they say don't empty porta potties in them then why try to find excuses to do it. I'm sure you would like the job of trying to pump them out when they go wrong.

Surely you can plane your trip a little to be able to use dump points, if your porta potti is full it is your problem don't make it someone else's or am I being to critical?

Same with rubbish, if the bins full just don't bag it and leave it on the ground take it with you and I don't even what to start on about toilet paper and s$%t everywhere.

That's my rant for the day.

Hey Coiled,
The ease of the composting loo sounds interesting. ...   is that the Kimberly one you are operating?
