travel/camping towels

hi all,

was looking around in the camping stores and i see more and more of the 'camping/travel' towels available.

usually made from microfibre with a terry towel or chamois finish...  super absorbent and quicker drying than a normal towel.

thought they might be useful in reducing the amount of room normal beach towels take up in luggage/bags...

has anyone got one?  happy with it?  waste of money?

i was thinking about one of these:

G'Day Mate......I don't know much about the microfibre ones...but...my question to you is....how do you fold your towels ?  My wife rolls ours and they seem to fit into smaller voids as apposed to flat fold..... Just a thought !!

we tend to roll ours, but it's also the drying time that i am looking at...

like i say, just looking at this stage, but could see the benefits of these types of towels...

I have a few older Kathmandu ones probably 40x80cm and use them heaps. Great for travelling and using as bath towels. Use at home when have dip in the pool. Throw in wash with other clothes after a few uses. I think the S2S ones are probably new generation and "nicer'. I use traditional beach towels if spending day on the sand, the microfiber ones you would need to decide if big enough etc.

We have a set of these microfiber ones from Aldi; http://offers.kd2.org/en/au/aldi/pbdfu/
Went with these cheap ones as a test, but we've been really happy with them so far.

They pack up tinny and dry really quickly.
The first couple of times you use them they 'stick' to you, it's really funny to explain, but you kind of have to pat yourself dry rather then wipe. After a couple of uses they seam to soften up and you can use them more normally.

Our first impressions have been good, even with the cheap and not so good quality ones that we bought. I'd have no problems getting another brand name set.

it looks like yours are the 'chamois' style towels... the one i am looking at is more of the terry towel style...

good to hear that you are happy with them, though...

Use the micro fibre ones a lot,  have had a few over the years from the chamois to the microfibre ones. The anaconda home brand ones (denali) are good.

They're great as bath towels.................

DO NOT use them on the ground like a beach towel, or even let them fall on the grass. You'll spend the next 4 hours picking out every bit of grass / leaf / stick I piece at a time, and about the only way to properly get the sand off is a washing machine.

My partner and I use these.
We reallly rate them highly.
They are the only towels we take if we dont take beach towels.
Just wait until they come on sale they are often 2 for the price of one.

We have been using the Sea to Summit ones for a few years now, find them great.  We have a large one each and the bride has a smaller one for her hair.  They work a treat and dry pretty quickly themselves.  They don't slide across your skin like a normal towel would but it's not a problem once you are used to them.  Yes they do fold/roll pretty small and out of the way.

Guess it depends on the type of travel / camping you are doing as to have useful they are...on the move all the time I see them as a good space saver and they do work fine, but if camped in one spot for a week or two I don't see a huge advantage to them myself. Misses grabbed a few before we went away at Xmas where we stayed put for 2 weeks.... I took a normal towel away, because my arguement was it only saves a small amount of space for two days (travel to camp and home again), after that the towel is hanging up drying on the clothes line anyhow.

We use those Katmandu ones when we are tight for space

They do the job and aren't prickly like the el cheapo ones.

Rays outdoors have some for about $20. We got one for our son for Xmas. Just hasn't used it yet so don't know how good it is.

ended up picking up a large sea to summit tek towel from BCF...

going camping this weekend, so will see how it goes... :)

My recommendation is buy one and try, we have the Kathmandu ones as well and I cant stand the feel of them on my skin, but I have friends who love them. We do take them for drying off the dog so still glad we got them.

I use a tek towel in medium, I think they are worth while, quick to dry and takes up very little space.

We use our microtowels a lot especially on trips such as GRR, whereby some of the swimming holes are a bit of a hike to get to, saves heaps of space and weight. Allows room in the back pack for extra snacks.

Turkish towels for us.  Can double as a sarong, beach wrap, table cloth, sun shade.  Love them.
