Dust Ingress via Pressure/Dust/Scupper Vent
« on: December 27, 2016, 12:26:16 PM »
All,

I recently went for a drive to check the dust coming in to "Harry" our MY15 Goldstream Storm Vacationer.

So I set up a GoPro inside to see how much dust was coming in through the positive pressure vent (aka a Scupper vent aka a dust vent). Also set one up outside the car ("Pearl" a LC200 Sahara MY13) to see where the dust goes.

It is designed to create a positive pressure to ensure dust does not get in anywhere else. But of course dust will get in via it! As can be seen the car kicks up dust to the roof level of the camper and dust comes in the scupper vent.

While it looks bad, in reality there was very little dust in the van afterwards, and far less than was there without it open. I did about 55km at 70-80km/h on fairly dusty roads and there was no obvious dust (except in the foot well) and only a very light cover on the floor / tables. The video shows that the van is not quite high enough to avoid the dust, but it will be interesting to see how it goes with the stone guard installed.

The light shaft makes it really easy to see the dust though! Am trying to figure out a way to add a dust filter with low pressure drop downstream of the vent ... next job!

Enjoy and appreciate your thoughts!

Good informative video .. Though I think you would have more success and most likely No dust,  if you fitted an automotive flat type  filter as Mark did on his Skid Mk3 build as in the pics .

That looks great! and probably reasonably low DP too. Might have to look for some to replace the standard one on the van :)

You need to ensure that the air you are pressurising the camperwith can't escape otherwise it isn't pressurised and the dust will definitely enter.

There will be vent in the floor to let the LPG out if you leave the gas on or the safety fails on the fridge.
There will probably be a vent in the lower section of the door of the camper.
Both will let dust in.  You can either block them off while travelling, or put up with them as they are.
You'll need to keep them clear when your inside the camper either doing stuff or sleeping.

You need a bigger collector to force more air inside the camper so it forces clean air out the vents mentioned while you travel.

Interesting vid, I have been playing with the same idea for my new van.
Light travels faster than sound............that's why some folks may appear bright until they speak
