That's really good, MadMarv...

My younger brother had a massive stroke - pretty much was totally paralyzed; couldn't speak, only a couple of words at a time; lost control of bowel movements; lay in bed 24-7-365; was put in an aged care facility for about 2 years; after which he sadly passed away; aged 48....

Terrible way to finish up...  As a consequence of the stroke - he also had onset frontal lobe dementia - and was in a lock down facility, the ones to stop elderly dementia residents wandering off....    Many times for no specific reason, (apart from all the obvious ones); .. he would start screaming out at the top of his voice
H E L P .... H E L P...   H E L P...

This could last sometimes for more than an hour or so .. (You could even hear him screaming from the car park; after visiting time was over)...

Very stressful and confronting; and so sad....   But at least he's at peace now...

Yep, been there, done that.
6 years ago I was diagnosed with a leaking heart valve, and was booked in for a pig valve replacement
Came down with a staph infection that grew things on two valves.
The damage caused a stroke, emergency open heart surgery with a piggy replacement and a repair to the other valve.
Over the next 6 weeks was three more rib openings for infection clean ups, collapsed lung, hernia operation, kidney failure and a few minor problems.
All that time a machine was breathing through a plastic thing poked through my throat.
Four weeks later I was back at work doing light computer crap.
I was over weight and according to the cardiac surgeon the fat stopped me from wasting away and kept me alive.
There are some nasty stories about strokes, and I was lucky enough to have a good one.
Good luck with your problems.

Interesting topic
I am curious to know if any had private medical or personal insurance.
And how much did it cost you. (Out of pocket expense)
Change is good, so smile and enjoy life!

Mine was public at the Brisbane PA Hospital.

No out of pocket expense , but the wifes parking bill was horrendous.

I've had a couple of relatives have strokes, one of them just minutes after he'd been up a ladder! He passed away a couple of years later, but did fine in his recovery.

One of the wife's friends had a stroke about 7 years ago - in the first half of her 20's! Her stroke was attributed to the contraceptive pill, one of those side effects that's mentioned in the instructions, but never read them. She suffered really badly with memory loss, which is a bit of a nightmare given how many passwords we need to know, but has now recovered fine (and 2 kids later...)

"Did anybody survive a stroke"

I guess having a reply is a good answer, no replies would be a big NO.

My sister had one a few years ago.
She recovered from it, but she can't work anymore, is forgetful and can't walk long without needing to rest.

Bloke at work had a minor stroke, he had almost finished a bottle of rum when he had it, didn't think anything of it, went to bed to sleep it off, next morning wife noticed, off to hospital. Two months off work, he was told to give up smokes and drinking, that lasted for a month or two now he's back at it.

Hey Marv,
Not a stroke but,
sub ractnal brain hemorrhage, anyiresum
20 Years ago this December 2nd.
Eldest daughter was 13 months old.
Fysh fell pregnant with our second daughter the night before.
6 weeks they send me back to Grafton, that day a Dr releases me, I'm flown to Brisbane again and another 2 months in Royal Brisbane, everyday was Ground Hogs Day for me.
Spent 6 months in recovery units, leaning how to do every thing, the scary thing was, I was in wards with 70-80 year olds.
I thought I'm to young(31) to be here.
Fysh didn't realize she was pregnant until April.
Gave up the Darts 2 years later.
Some say my sense of humor is worse,  8)
Statistics, 80% die, of the 20% left, on a hand full can do what they did before.
Not trying to take away from your story, but life is precious.

Life isn't about how many breathes you take, but how many times you have your breathe taken away.

Cheers for sharing your story Marv.

Happy & Safe travels mate.

Had a mild stroke 3 weeks ago at work.  The whole right side from top of my head to my feet felt like lead and my speech was very slow due to the time it took to think about the words to be able to make myself understood and due to the fact that one side of my face was numb, bit like the feeling after you have had a visit to dentist.  Very lucky it happened at work as they had ambulance on site within 8 minutes then 20 mins to hospital and straight in for CT scan, then immediately on treatment to dissolve the blockage.  Have completely recovered as I was treated within hour and half of it happening, so lucky it was only mild one and have been back at work since Monday.

Certainly is a wake up call in everyway!!!
