Can someone school me on electronic gizmo's please.
« on: December 20, 2016, 04:10:24 PM »
The caddy's radio is dead (Knew that before we bought it, so thats ok) and during next year, I'm having the internals of the radio replaced with all modern stuff including coloured teeth. (blue tooth)  ;D
That way we can look factory stock, but have the modern sounds etc.

Now, when we bought it, we were also told it had been wired with USB connection and it has, so that bit is all good too.

So, what the fark can I run off it and how does it work?

Don't tell me I can plug my phone into it, as my phone is a dinosaur model about 8 years old or so. (Wife's is about the same age too)
Can you plug a little CD player into a USB?

I really need some music... with a single factory exhaust, the car is whisper quiet, so the wife has a need to talk to me when we drive.

So, what the hell can I run off a USB port?

I don't wanna ask the local Autobarn staff, as they will just stare at me in disbelief that I don't get it.
At least if have a heads up on what I can do, at least I can seem slightly intelligent.

Yeah, GG, there is a mob here that return your radio full of new crap for $350 to $395. That bit i'm okwith.

Its the interim bit I don't get.

So Adam, what would you expect to pay for USB stick and how do I load music onto it?

OK, googled JB hifi, usb things from 29 bucks.  8)

Do they plug into a computer and you download from youtube?
Or from a music box itself?

i haven't the faintest.
i have tried a few times without success
usb's are cheap as chips, what you need is someone with a bucket load of music on there computer already, to load it with some choice tunes

do you know if the usb works ?

I dont think a usb stick on its own will work unless the cars player is compatible.
Buy an ipod & get all your music on it. Plug it in & you should be good to go.

Either that or get a 8track & put it in the boot 😂

Go down to your local kindergarden with the Caddy under the pretext of show and tell, and ask one of the kiddies to play their Wiggles collection on your new stereo.

Ouch.

Jeepers if it will play directly from a USB stick you can download music onto your PC and copy them to the USB and plug it in to the sterio to play. I used to do it that way now i bluetooth the phone to it. If your not an Apple Addict then theres a site called mp3million that you can download just about anything (you have to open an acount with them tho)

No mate it is not.  It is as simple as saving a word document to a folder on your computer.  Most music download sites and music management programs, or apps for phones and tablets, are really simple to use.  Click and follow the prompts.

Hi Jeepers,

I did a post on here a few months back.....think it was in Daily Rant ?

I basically copied all of my 400 plus CD collection onto the PC and then onto hard drive and the onto 5 separate USB sticks. Had to break them down into categories on USB so it was easier to find particular songs/artist.
Very time consuming exercise that took me nearly 27 hours at the PC all up, but I'm so glad I persevered with it as I now have safe copy of everything.

Cheers
Rob

Is it hard to download music?

In this particular case it sounds as though the answer is yes.
Send me a postal address and I will start you off with a usb with sound.

Kev , If the Caddy has a USB fitted and the original radio is U.S. then its a fair bet she has another stereo tucked away possibly under the front seats or have a look in and around the glove box / dash for a fold down panel .
Try to track the USB cable to where it goes .

as mentioned already, it can be very time consuming if ripping (copying) your old CD's to the PC and then onto a USB stick (the ripping part takes the time, putting that onto USB is quick). The process itself is pretty easy once you know how (isn't everything...lol), but even though I have done it numerous times already, I still call out to my 13 year old daughter to remind me what I need to do next, as I keep forgetting....lol.

Morning Kev, every chance that if the radio is dead, then the usb port won't be doing much either. At best it might be a power source to charge a phone or a usb fan.
Music on a usb stick needs an amplifier source and usually the radio or a computer provides this.

Tbh best option might be to get the radio rebuilt and don't waste time or effort on what is.

In the interim, you could grab a battery powered radio from BigW etc and blue tack it to your dash board.

or grab an inverter and run the home stereo in the boot  ;D ;D you could also deck it out with a few chairs and a fridge and still have room left over

Another option may be a small MP3 player. Plug that into a USB cable and plug that into the stereo. Then use the MP3 player for the controls, the stereo will just be the amp and the speakers, well, speakers.

Ripping music is easy, yes it takes time, but it is far from hard.

You can set the computer to rip and save the music automatically, no matter what CD you drop in there it will look for music files and ask if you want to save them.. which probably explains how I got this music in my playlist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bzWSJG93P8 ... bloody kids.
I did 50 or 60 CD's over the course of a few days. I was doing stuff on the computer and would chuck a CD in the drive, I would do my thing, it would do its thing and eject it when it was done. Then when I was ready, take the CD out, stow it, drop a new one in, close the drive and away it goes.

http://www.howtogeek.com/228172/how-to-rip-audio-cds-to-your-pc-or-mac/

Now I have itunes which does it easier and finds album covers for you, but many don't like it.

yes as i said below, the process is easy.... but if Kev is anything like me (shocking memory and computer challenged), he's likely to forget what to do after it's been ripped like i seem to do, even if he's done it 100 times before already. The saving grace for me is,  i just call my 13 year old daughter in to help me out...lol.
