Need help with my dancing Santa
« on: December 05, 2016, 04:52:43 PM »
We bought a dancing Santa for the store and everything was working well,  dancing and singing but now he has stopped singing. I checked the wiring and all looks good. I even connected another speaker and you hear the sound for a second then nothing. The sound is crackling and then goes off.

Rang the supplier and they will give us a part refund as the cost to ship a new one is $160.

It must be something simple.

Unfortunately these devices aren't as simple as they seem, it will have a microprocessor that does all the smarts, one output of the micro most likely drives a small audio output stage, if you have access to an oscilloscope, scope the outputs of the micro and see if audio is coming out of it, it may be in analogue or digital, if digital you'll see a stream of spikes that will feed into a filter, you should see audio wave form on the output of the filter. Also worth checking the plug pack.

You may have a dry joint, a fault in the audio amp if it has one or the micro itself could be faulty or have a data corruption.

Depending on how much it will cost to ship it back might be worth doing that or try for a better refund and cut your loses.

Yes something so small can be so complicated. Will try and see what I can do without blowing Santa up.  ;D

Thanks for the reply.

guage should be at least B&S 6  ;D

but agree with HKB. If you gently tug and push on the wires one at a time does it come good ?

I found a similiar problem at home and the problem would come and go. Eventually worked out which wire was causing the problem. When the particular wire was pushed, the wire came away from the PCB at the back taking the solder joint with it. Scratched a bit of the green stuff off the PCB and soldered the wire to the track. Problem fixed  ;D

Why is it that you leave this to the end of the year to start this , when everybody is busy . Poor planning as you have had all year to fix this     :'(       >:D
